Finished with season 4 and as it turns out, also the complete series because as you might know, Resident Alien has been cancelled after 4 seasons. I would have loved to have seen one or two more seasons but on a positive note, there is a satisfying conclusion. The showrunner told in a response to the cancellation that he knew it was going to be their last season. If he meant “felt” or really was informed by someone that the show was in its last season I don’t know but I am just very happy creator Chris Sheridan decided chose to end the story, give it closure because now you can rewatch it every few years without making you wondering how this would have ended.
The cast remained the same, although there was a recurring character added, Jewel Staite was Jules Garndner, a colleague of Detective Lena Torres, Sheriff Mike’s girlfriend. As you’ll probably remember Nathan Fillion was also recurring character in the first seasons as the alien octopus. Yes, indeed, Firefly actors do help each other out over the years, which I, and most of you I think, really like!
In the season 3 finale we learn that not Harry has returned from the spaceship, but an hostile alien shapeshifter posing as Harry, this alien is called a Mantid.
The imposter thinks of killing Asta and the kids because they are the only ones who can cause him trouble. D’Arcy still has Kate’s baby and hasn’t returned it yet because of the safety of the baby when the aliens return for her. Asta and Joseph are in a relationship with benefits and Sherif Mike Thompson is on medical leave because he thinks he was hallucinating when he saw the alien and deputy Liv Baker has Peter Bach hidden in a cave. Note - Alan Tudyk obviously had a lot of fun playing this different, a more evil Harry, he did it perfectly, as he has been fantastic from the very first episode.
After Harry escapes from the ship, he has lost his alien powers and he is very much afraid of his evil double and hides away at Asta and D’Arcy’s. Joseph no longer only wants the benefits, he wants to marry Asta which she refuses. She however does manipulate him to find the Mantid. He is able to chase him away but in the fight his face is heavily disfigured, mutilated. Note – This scene gives some very hilarious scenes with Harry, Asta and D’Arcy not being able to look at the heavily mutilated side of Joseph’s face. As a result, the Alien takes on another form. Ben and Kate think Joseph has something to do with her missing baby and are planning to capture him. Sheriff Mike realizes that he now does believe in aliens. Note - The Joseph scenes where a lot of laughs and the nod to the Incredible Hulk at the end was hilarious.
Harry and D’Arcy travel back to 1970 to find an alien device that he can trade for his alien mojo. Wright however has also traveled back to get that same device because she thinks she can help her dad with it, giving him the comfort that her daughter believed him when he said he saw aliens, it fails but she finds another way to do so. Asta tells her cousin about Harry and her life for the last 3 years and that the baby actually is Kate and Ben’s. Max and Sahar are trying to find and capture the Mantid, but they get unexpected help. Kate remembers more and more of her time on the alien spaceship and Jules Gardner (Jewel Staite) comes to help with the murder investigation. Heather is back, with Harry’s kids. Harry does not want to tell Heather the truth about him being nothing more than human. Kate knows D’Arcy was on that ship and she decides to test her theory but her husband blows it. Heather wants to marry Harry and he agrees but Asta tells him he should tell her the truth which he does. He also says he cannot marry her because it would not be fair to her. Mike tells his girlfriend that he has seen an alien, which she can’t handle. Kate gets warned by the aliens, disguised as children that sell cookies, that they are watching for her always and everywhere.
Harry is feeling all alone, since he is a human. He desperately wants to connect with his son but this is difficult. Ben and Kate invite Liv to dinner so they can talk to her about aliens and their baby. Sheriff invites himself to the dinner party. D’Arcy wants to adopt a dog, Asta volunteers to also work the restaurant so her dad can go on a music gig. Note – Here I noticed Gary Farmer (Dan Twelvetrees) was not looking very well, turns out he has cancer! ☹ Peter Bach visits Harry and tries to cheer him up when he realizes Harry is depressed, he is going to look for his son.
A near perfect episode “Soul Providers”, Harry is transported to the Galactic Housing Council to answer for his crimes. He convinces them that he can bring the Mantid in exchange for him becoming alien again. D'Arcy has lost the bag of money she was supposed to deposit at the bank for Asta from the cafeteria. Kate is having a real hard time about her baby which she thinks is still with the aliens. Liv tries to comfort her. Harry discovers that he has bonded with humans... and grown a soul. Now that the Mantid isn’t dead, he makes another deal with the council: if he doesn’t kill the mantid, the Grey can have him, he, who has grown a soul! This selfless act proves he has a soul. One of his demands is that they for ever leave Kate and Ben’s baby alone. D’Arcy is really depressed because her life is going nowhere, it is Harry who helps her see that her life has value. She goes to an AA meeting. The lost money is found. Asta and her niece bring the baby to Kate and Ben, without revealing themselves.
Harry’s father is the one who decides if and when Harry gets his alien energy back! He is a bastard, hates his son because he thinks he is weak. Note – Stephen Root is Harry’s father and he is hilariously and annoyingly funny, I wouldn’t have minded if he was longer on the show. D’Arcy comes to clean to Asta and tells her she was thinking about ending her own life. Note – although this is a real funny show, D’Arcy’s character can be very funny but she has a lot of issues and we as a viewer get to see how deep she falls but then also manages to pick herself up again. I really liked the character D’Arcy and I really appreciate her story-arc. Asta’s dad does not want Asta to stay forever in Patience, he wants her to see the world instead of taking over the diner. Ben and Kate tell to everyone their child is adopted, Sheriff Mike thinks Jules is the mantid and she basically admits it. Harry’s dad has a test for Harry, kill Max to prove he is still ruthless. Harry pretends to do it but kills his dead. Harry gets his mojo back and becomes an alien again, right at that time Max’s parents walk into Harry’s home and actually see him as an alien too.
Sheriff Mike and Liv think that Harry is the alien! Ben and Kate hear the whole story about Harry being an alien, Kate is especially displeased with Asta and D’Arcy for keeping them in the dark. The Mantid Jules kills the real Jules. To kill the Mantid, Harry needs Max, because he can see aliens, his parents don’t allow him so he gets help from Sahar. Harry is angry at Asta because she spoke out the desire to leave Patience, without him. Sheriff and Harry decide to work together, the go into the mine, Liv is there too, walking towards the men, but Max, who snuck out his mum’s car, is there and sees that Liv is the mantid.
Harry and the friends he's made, go after the Mantid in the mine tunnels, but its shape shifting and mind reading powers make things confusing. Harry fights and kills the Mantid, Asta gets injured during that fight, she almost dies, Harry’s blood transfusion saves her. Max is crucial in recognizing the Mantid. Meanwhile, Liv and Robert (Bach’s son) wait to be eaten by Mantid babies. Harry and the Sheriff find them but the alien Mantid babies are already hatching, Peter Bach however, has had an add-on to his armer, a blowtorch and scorches the Mantid babies. Afterward, Harry and Asta both make decisions about their futures. They both will leave Patience. Asta wakes up and softly says: they are here!
Ethan is on his way back to Patience wanting to settle the score with Harry when an alien ship crashes on his car. The Alien, Harry’s species, takes on Ethan’s body. At first he wants, like Harry at first, to kill everyone, but instead of Harry needing to kill Ethan, he just lets him socialize, which will change him like Harry did. Sheriff and Liv get a new secret job upon their current jobs. Asta’s present to her daughter, makes her realize how much her mother has loved her from the day she was born. After realizing Ethan won’t be a problem, him becoming the new towns doctor, he knows he can leave, he wants to back to Heather. Like Harry, Asta also leaves Patience. Note – It was perhaps not a really spectacular episode and things moved ahead a bit too quickly here and there, still I am satisfied with the ending, a satisfying conclusion rather than a cliff-hanger.
Final Word:
This definitely has been one of my favorite in the last five years. Alan Tudyk was phenomenal has Harry but it definitely was a group effort, the whole cast was just fantastic, I can’t name a character I don’t like. Four very solid seasons, yes the last season was also very solid, not one episode I rated below an 8/10. With a few rewatches I will know which is my favorite season, currently I think it still is the first season but this definitely can change over time! Thank you Resident Alien for being here for the last 4 years, and even though it has a satisfying ending, I am going to miss it!
