The 3rd season only consists of 8 episodes while season 2 had 16 episodes. Yes, it was aired with a hiatus between season 2a and season 2b but still, 16 episodes which is many episodes for Syfy Channel these days, where the standard is 10-12 or something? Anyway the cutback from 12 to 8 episodes luckily didn’t mean that Resident Alien’s 3rd season would be it’s last. Although I have to admit, for me, the 1st season is still the strongest, probably because it was new, the portrayal of Harry Vanderspeigle by Alan Tudyk was fresh, it was weird, absurd and deliriously funny. Not to say that the 2nd and 3rd season are bad, certainly not, I am really still enjoying it. Strange thing however, usually with TV shows the first season is not the strongest, at least in SCI-FI.
The 3rd season starts off with “Lone Wolf”, Harry starts working with General Wright (Linda Hamilton). Meanwhile, Joseph infiltrates the sheriff's department as a deputy and dates Asta to learn more about Harry. Harry is at first against the date but he figures he can learn more about him. Sahar breaks some startling news to Max, she’s leaving and Kate is haunted by an owl. The Mayor is returned by the aliens. Sahar thinks Harry killed the alien hunter. Harry wakes up Asta when he is sitting beside her bed (she is more than a little startled). He tells her, because he cares so much for her, he rather wants to keep her safe than the rest of the human race, it would be easier if Asta was dead! Note – A solid opening of the 3rd season, I personally liked Harry working together with Wright.
In the “Upper Hand” Max brings his new friends to see Harry, and embraces the role of Alien Tracker. Harry however doesn’t budge and denies being an alien. While having a date with Asta, Joseph traps Harry and D'Arcy in his home. Max and his friends get him out. Harry makes a concession, telling him and his friends that an alien lives here. Asta does not let Joseph intimidate her and neither is her father. She immobilizes him with a tranquilizer. Harry has Joseph in his home when he wakes up, not bound. They talk about what ifs, if they would fight one another. Mainly comes down to a lot of damage either way, and Harry each time has the same mechanic over the floor who is boring, talks to much about his photography hobby. Note – Hilarious scene! Lena Torries breaks off her relationship with the Sheriff, because she knows that he won’t change and she can’t either. Sherif has a weird hobby, foot photography! He thinks the Mayor has nice feet, ‘is some future in it’ according to the sheriff. Ben has a lump on his foot, Harry recognizes it as a bug from the Greys and hypnotizes the Mayor to get more info about them. Note - Love this episode, so much humor, really one of the best in the entire series! Scene between Harry and Joseph in Harry’s home is simply hilarious!
Another great episode “141 Seconds” where Kate relives being abducted but holding her baby, until the Greys take it from her. Ben, Kate & Max go to Riverstone, Harry invites himself, with a sob story. He believes he needs to follow Ben to bring him to the Greys. Harry finds a portal. Judy thinks she now is in a relationship with Sheriff Mike after they had sex. Liv is getting closer and closer to the guy in the plaid shirt sitting next to the Alien hunter, which is of course Harry! After Nana is mean to her, Liv is having a breakdown, Sheriff uncomfortably comforts her. A portal opens in Harry’s home, an alien bird like creature steps out and tells him he is being accused of not leaving the planet when the Greys told him to. Note – Sheriff is just hilarious, steals every scene he is in. Him comforting Liv is just great TV.
In the ”Avian Flu” Harry is in love with Heather, the bird woman. He tries to deal with this new emotion. Asta takes Jay to the rez for a party, to meet the family. She asked if she can stay with Asta for a few days because she and her foster mother are having a fight. D’Arcy is confronted with Elliot’s new girlfriend. Kate is trying to cope with her not being able to sleep and is drawing scary images. Max and Ben find them scary while she believes she is drawing for a children’s book. After a remark from Max, Kate searches for the meaning of an owl at your window in regard to alien abductions. Mike and Liv pursue clues to what happened to the first alien tracker, Peter Bach, Peter Bach is being held by General Wright, she is planning to make some sort of a super soldier of him, one that can see aliens. Asta is a bit jealous of Harry and Heather, he seems not to be needing her so much at the moment. Note – some hilarious scenes between Heather and Harry. What an actor, Alan Tudyk!
In “Lovebird” Harry and Heather have a deep, meaningful, three-day relationship, they’re having sex everywhere! He lays some hard truths on Asta and D'Arcy, when he is witness that they are trying to scare Heather off, with the girl code. Asta and D’Arcy get a roommate, Jay, Asta’s daughter and Max's stolen science project inadvertently reveals what the Greys have planned for Earth. Kate finds a lump in her neck, which she suspects is from alien abduction. Joseph grabs Heather and tells her that she now is working for the Greys, they know where her family lives and will kill them all if she doesn’t cooperate in procuring Harry’s Alien DNA. Afterwards she is to leave without him, and never see him again, otherwise he will be killed too. Note – hilarious moments when Harry and Heather are at dinner at Asta and D’Arcy. Also that song at the end, ugly but again hilarious!
In “Bye Bye Birdie” Harry is unconsolable when Heather breaks up with him. What he doesn’t know is that Joseph threatened her. D’Arcy and Asta have a fight which starts about Asta’s daughter being a slob and her mother not saying anything about it. But D’Arcy cannot understand why Asta didn’t tell her about the alien business when it began. Deputy Liz is having problems with the mean comments of her grandma, she and the sherif go to her grandma, there, things go a bit too far when she suffers from a small heart attack. Kate joins the AA club for alien abductions, deputy Liv is there too. Harry’s son is back on earth and he is there to kill his dad. Note - Another great song from Harry!
In “Here Comes My Baby” Harry reconciles with his baby after a nasty fight. Max feels being used by Harry, only when he needs him he shows up. Harry realizes the Mayor’s wife is abducted and hypnotizes her and let’s her remember everything. D’Arcy’s dad is really proud of her and knows she’s gonna do great things. Asta’s mom needs money and tries to swindle her daughter. Jay goes back to her foster parents because Asta needs to learn to be a parent for real. Mayor saves Sherif and the deputy from Joseph as he is about to kill them. It looks like the Mayor at least severely wounded him, but joseph is gone when they go back. D’Arcy has stolen Harry’s bomb!
In the season finale “Homecoming” Harry, Bridget, Asta, and D'arcy all board the Grey's ship, to stop the aliens’ plan to destroy Earth and recover Kate's daughter, as well as rescue D'arcy from her rescue attempt. D’Arcy sees Kate running around there and goes after her, she manages to save the baby while Kate is taken away. Joseph switches sides, but General Wright isn't convinced. Peter Bach shows up with some steel in his spine. He sends deputy Liv a message, to meet him. It looks like Harry saves the day, but Harry does not return to earth, it is a shapeshifter who was imprisoned by the Greys who travels back to earth. Max discovers this when he is at Harry’s house as the Harry impostor opens the door. Without Kate knowing this, D’Arcy has saved Kate’s baby and brings it to them. Sheriff and Lena rekindle their romance. For the first time the Sheriff comes in contact with an alien, a Grey. Note – A strong season finale, 2nd best episode of the season in my opinion. I really liked the action on the Grey’s space ship and also the twist we see at the end!
Final Word:
A strong season, again. Short perhaps, but with a (season) story-arc this actually helps because there are no filler episodes. The cast of this show is amazing, Harry, Sheriff Mike, Deputy Liv, Asta, D’Arcy, the Mayor, Kate, Max and Sahar they all contribute to this exciting and fun TV show, I really like them all, there isn’t one character I didn’t like. I also forget nurse Ellen, a recurring character, should get a bigger role if you ask me, and Dan, Asta’s dad. I hope this show goes on for a couple more seasons at least, but I don’t have much faith in the Syfy Channel these days, but we will have to wait and see…and hope!
