Continued: Unfortunately the new series has never been made, which is a shame. ITV studios was again behind it and even in 2018, Brian Johnson, special effects director for the original series, announced that the reboot was on track for production in the UK, pending "confirmation of the deal". Apparently it is still pending!

Space: 1999 is a British science-fiction series aired from 1975-1977. In the opening episode, set in the year 1999, nuclear waste stored on the Moon's far side explodes, knocking the Moon out of orbit and sending it, as well as the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling uncontrollably into space. At that time the series was the most expensive TV series ever created. It was the last production by the partnership of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The first series was co-produced by ITC Entertainment and Italian broadcaster RAI, while the second series was produced solely by ITC.

Two series were produced, both 24 episodes, that is something that nowadays is no longer done, 24 episodes of any certain series, usually it is between 5 tot 10 episodes, Doctor Who currently seems to be an exception with usually having 13 episodes a season. The lead actors were Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, who were married with each other at that time! Arguably the first series is seen as the better of the two.

I myself only had seen the series about 10 years ago for the first time! I purchased series one on Blu-ray. I have to say I enjoyed it, at that time, I believe the second series hadn’t been released yet and when it did, it was quite expensive so I put it off. At the moment I still only have the first series and I hear it is the best one but I still planning on purchasing series two also. My interest in the TV series was garnered because of the possible new series called Space: 2099. There even were some posters created for this potential TV series and I have to say, I was very eager to see this follow-up series and it made me curious about the original TV series.

Thank you for sharing this post as I am such a fan of Space: 1999 since I was a teen. My favorite characters are Koenig, Helena, Maya and Tony. Maya was always my most favorite cause of her excellent powers.
