It is a real shame Travelers was not renewed for a 4th season. How come brilliant shows like this and for instance a show as Timeless (and many others) are struggling to be renewed each time while shows like CSI and NCIS run forever. Of course, in part I can answer my own question but it still boggles my mind. Travelers is a superb show, not only for SCI-FI fans. It is a great show with lots of drama, action, suspense and dares to show humor also. And yes, also SCI-FI. Besides that, the actors are superb also, real joy to see this team grow over the course of 3 seasons. My favorite character is without a doubt Marcy, performed by Mackenzie Porter, what she pulls out of her (acting) hat, is simply amazing. I love her relationship with David, played by Patrick Gilmore, also a fantastic actor. The whole cast is terrific but I wanted to highlight these two.
“Ilsa” is the first episode of season three and continues the storyline from the season two finale. MacLaren, his team and their loved ones are being taken to a safe house, protected by travelers posing as FBI agents. The loved ones get a serum to forget what happened. Jeffrey however, somehow has hold on to some of his memories and he tells MacLaren he doesn’t trust him. A powerful AI, called Ilsa, created by Dr. Teslia, is unexpectedly used by The Director, to communicate with people from the 21st century.
FBI agent Agent Joanne Yates is contacted by Dr. Teslia, The Director gives Yates information needed to successfully convince FBI Director Stevenson to cancel a mission to capture MacLaren's team. Yates at first gets in trouble because that mission is highly classified. Apparently, some years ago, the Director saved Stevenson’s daughter who was going to die of cancer. But the Director had said: There will be a reckoning. Meanwhile, instead of helping Simon, Victor lets him be overwritten. Note – I love this first episode, the fact that Travelers are becoming a public secret. Directed by Eric McCormack.
In “Yates” A tabloid television host spreads gossip and half truths about Travelers. Trevor goes to live with Philip. Carly loses the custody of her son. Jeff is drinking heavily and with his son in the backseat, he is apprehended and his son is brought to child services. David is exhausting himself with sports as a result of the kidnapping. MacLaren and Yates adjust to their new partnership, with Yates also acting as the FBI liaison to MacLaren's team. Kate is going to her mother, she is angry and suspicious about MacLaren. The television host, who was historically murdered, is overwritten by a traveler and before he dies, he publicly apologizes for the cynical manipulation of his followers.
In “Protocol 3” MacLaren wakes up unable to remember the previous day. Using his car's location data he retraces his steps back to where Aleksander (from season 1, episode 3) was in a foster home. Marcy accompanies Philip to a meeting. When she says she’s a doctor, one of the others refuses to believe that and becomes nasty. Aleksander is now a disturbed youth with a horrific future, and MacLaren's mission was to kill him. MacLaren's positive impact on the boy changes the timeline, though, and the mission is aborted. He still has a hard time with it, if the Director hadn’t changed its mind, MacLaren would have killed him. He himself suggested the drug to make him forget it. The boy is doing fine now. Dr. Teslia is surprised to learn that Ilsa has had a major leap in its capabilities, seemingly on its own. Note – I thought this was a really good episode. As a viewer you are kept in the dark for the first 15-20 minutes. Some heartfelt moments as you as the viewer realizes what MacLaren is tasked to do.
In “Perrow” we see 001 as Perrow is in an accident and brought to a hospital and because of this the Director becomes aware of the fact that 001 has switched bodies. Perrow is being kidnapped from the hospital by the Faction, apparently in the future, 001 was their leader. The Faction believes the Director has lost its way. The team finds out about 001 and tries to find her. The Director needs access to the internet and via Grace they find a way to connect Ilsa to the internet. This way the Director can find everything about 001. David is getting a beating because he wants to help a client of his. Luckily (!) Philip and Trever come to his rescue. Not lucky of course because Philip already seen it. Jeff has an armed confrontation with the team, telling him that he knows of their existence as Travelers, and is overwritten by Traveler 5416. Kat is really afraid of MacLaren, she keeps thinking he is going to erase her or something. 001 is rescued by his team and a new transfer is done, presumably because Perrow is found dead by our team. Note – another great episode and although Grace only had a small part, she made me smile again, being eager to go to Ilse to talk with the director. Directed by Amanda Tapping.
In “Naomi” a Child messenger Naomi prevents a deadly accident at a nuclear power plant. The messenger AI goes rogue, risking her life. The team attempts to extract it from Naomi, but the program expands too rapidly. It transfers itself to Trevor, but it is extracted by the Director after Grace tried it first. Later, Trevor starts to exhibit a brain disorder. Traveler 5416, who was sent back to handle solo missions, adjusts to the body of Jeff. MacLaren deals with Kat's suspicions by falsely telling her that she chose to try the memory inhibitor to deal with trauma from when a terrorist cell went after them. Marcy agrees to train David in firearm safety and self-defense after he buys a gun. Note – It must have been a joy for Jennifer Spence to play this role, she steals every scene she is in. Again, Directed by Amanda Tapping.
“Philip” is kidnapped by the faction. Because they have no historian, they are trying to persuade them to join them, telling them that they are the good guys and the Director has lost its way. Hall has been shot in pursuing of these faction people, he is mortally wounded. Kyle pretends to be a Traveler but is in fact from the faction, he has shot Hall and Luca was with him and he also is loyal to the Faction. Although Hall is unconscious, our team has found a way to communicate with Hall and because of this they found out who killed him and where Philip most likely is being held. Jeff needs help from a social worker and he asks David. Jeff thinks he can get him to signed of on it but David is not planning to that, he has to earn it. Hall dies on the operating table and in his last moments he is told that he saved them all, so he can die in peace. Note – A truly fantastic episode. Louis Ferreira as Hall shows some great acting, shame he had to die, on the other hand, show was almost done anyway.
“Trevor” comes clean to his colleagues about his temporal aphasia, a brain disorder that repeatedly leaves the victim physically frozen. He gets a request from the Director to talk with him via the Ilse AI. He suggested a new consciousness will be loaded in to Trevor because with his disease he can no longer function correctly and it will only get worse. When Grace learns of this, she is certain she can help him but the Director wants to honor the deal he made with Trevor. The team decides to take matters into their own hands. MacLaren miss remembers something which makes Kate wonder again. She decides to set a trap for him, a memory trap. David’s first client dies, he has a hard time with it, he himself was 16 years old when he became his client. He speaks on the eulogy but he is so nervous about it, he will only speak if Marcy is there too. She barely makes it. Carly gets a new apartment, her neighbors, a couple, the man seems to be an aggressive, controlling man. Note - Guest starring: Gary Jones (Stargate SG-1) & Jim Byrnes (Highlander, the Series). One of the best of the series. Some emotional scenes with Trevor and the team, Grace and Trevor. Also With David and Marcy, these two work really well together.
In “Archive” A Traveler with a mission vital to humanity's survival arrives in the body of a serial killer, who is arrested moments after being overwritten. MacLaren tries to convince Yates to keep the Traveler out of jail until he can complete his mission, which will save 1.4 billion people. The team breaks him out of custody, and the mission is completed. Jeff is given a solo mission to rescue a Traveler Archivist who has been captured by the Faction. He helps the Archivist escape and enlists David's help in getting the injured Archivist to the Archive. David and the Archivist are shot when the Archive is breached. Philip has more and more trouble with the alternative future’s he is seeing. Note - Directed by: Amanda Tapping. Heavy moment when David gets shot! No idea at this moment if still lives. Also a very strong episode.
In “David” The Faction sets off nuclear blasts that destroys all of the Travelers' archives outside the US. David, left for dead by the Faction in the last surviving archive, is the only person who can disarm the nuclear device. He succeeds but is exposed to lethal radiation. Kat's suspicions about MacLaren, temporarily allayed, surge again and she throws him out – for her, the marriage is over as she feels he is no longer the man she first met. Jeff tries to escape from an interrogation by 001; he is eventually found having been walled up. Marcy hopes the Director will send a Traveler medical team to save David but no help arrives. In the moment before he dies, David conveys a message from the Director: "Protocol Omega". Note – This is just an absolute brilliant episode, 10/10 for me, that’s for sure. Everything what’s happening to David, Marcy is desperate, it is just 44 minutes of perfection!
In the series finale episode “Protocol Omega” By invoking Protocol Omega the Director has indicated that it is no longer intervening in this timeline. Which also means that David has died because of it. The team believes that the reason is because the most likely the Traveler program has failed. Jeff has been overwritten by 001, he kidnaps Marcy while pretending to be looking out for her. He thinks she can help him to obtain the backdoor code to the Director that is stored in her brain. Grace pointed Jeff to Marcy because she believed the Director would intervene. Marcy kills herself to prevent this, so 001 uploads his consciousness to the internet, enabling him to exist in the future and ultimately gain control. Russia and China blame the U.S. for the nuclear explosions in their nations and target the U.S. with a nuclear strike. MacLaren uses 001's machine to send his consciousness into his host's younger body on the day when his host met Kat in Whytecliff Park. Rather than starting a relationship with her, he tells her to give her then-boyfriend a second chance. He also gives a written paper with a warning about Helios, On September 11, 2001 he goes to an office in the World Trade Center just before 001's expected arrival there and emails the Director: "Traveler program will fail. Do not send 001. The Director acknowledges that the first Traveler program has failed and starts a program for version two. The original Marcy of the 21st century, who has not been injured by 001, happens to sit beside David on a bus and they strike up a conversation. A new timeline has been created. Note – Another brilliant episode 10/10, shocking at times, suspenseful and intense drama, especially around Marcy and her feelings for David. The ending is double, yes the Director begins again with version two, so yes, The Director keeps on trying to send someone through, but was also nice to see Marcy and David still getting together as if they were meant for each other. Nice scene to end the series with. Directed by Amanda Tapping.
Final Word:
One of the best time travel shows ever created! My favorite three are: Travelers, Timeless and 12 Monkeys. It is just such a rich story, heavy on the story-arc, not only overall, but also for each character. Brad Wright and his colleagues did a superb job, I wish we could have gotten a few more seasons out of it but hey, I am not complaining too much because we did have an ending. Yes, we know The Director keeps trying but for me, this feels like a satisfying enough ending. If you haven’t watched this yet, you are truly missing out on a great piece of television, and as you probably will realize by now, heavy influenced by Stargate!
