I only learned of The Boroughs when I read the news about its cancellation. I try to keep up with the news, for my website, but for some reason I missed this entirely, until its cancellation that is. As I reported on this website, it got cancelled when it ranked number two, at least two streaming charts. I figured Netflix would come to their senses, but that didn’t happen, The Boroughs stays cancelled unfortunately.

So, when I learned of its cancellation, I immediately got interested in this new show, a show which was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by The Duffer Brothers, who also are responsible for Stranger Things. Well, I quit watching Stranger Things somewhere in the 3rd or 4th season, lost interest. This premise did intrigue me and it had a very experienced and interesting cast: Alfred Molina; Alfre Woodard; Denis O'Hare; Clarke Peters; Carlos Miranda; Jena Malone; Seth Numrich; Alice Kremelberg; Geena Davis and Bill Pullman, who was there for just one episode but for some reason he was shown on the posters!

Yes, The Boroughs is in fact the follow-up series to Stranger Things, it was even dubbed as Stranger Things with seniors! How you can describe best what The Boroughs actually is at heart: it is about a group of people who have reached the stage of life where others assume their adventures are over, only to discover that they may be facing the biggest and most important adventure of their lives.

The story starts when Sam Cooper who after the death of his wife, reluctantly moves to The Boroughs, a picturesque retirement community that promises its residents an enjoyable and peaceful life. But very soon Sam discovers there is something very wrong. After a terrifying encounter, when finding his neighbor dead in his house, he realizes that a monstrous and otherworldly presence is hiding beneath the community's perfect surface. When people don’t believe him, Sam starts looking for answers himself. Soon, he and his close by neighbors come together to investigate this otherworldly presence together.

They are all very different people with their own problems, losses, regrets and so on, but what brings them together are these very strange events that are recurring in and around The Boroughs, which makes it part of something much bigger. Suddenly their lives become way more interesting and exciting. The mystery involves missing people, strange minerals, unexplained phenomena and a hidden force connected to the community itself.

What I also like about it is the twist, which runs throughout the series. When the series starts, you assume that these monstrous aliens are the ultimate threat, but that is not the case! Sam sees his dead wife glitching before him constantly, it appears she is in agony, she seems frustrated. What Sam doesn’t realize at that point is that via his death wife, he has been asked for help, from an unexpected ally.

I really like the idea, a show like this about elderly people whose lives get more interesting, not because of certain mundane things, but because of these strange events that are happening in The Boroughs. These are people who often are being underestimated or dismissed because they are older, but the series turns that idea onto its head. Normally, with a cast like this, you expect a comedy, or some other traditional TV show, so this really piqued my interest and I have to say, I enjoyed it a lot and am sad it only lasts one season of only eight episodes.

Besides the SCI-FI / mystery elements to the show, The Boroughs is something more than that; it is about elderly people who experience not having enough time anymore. Things like aging, grief, loneliness, memory loss and mortality are some things they deal with daily. But more so, their lives seem to be over. They are neatly tucked away in a community where they are easily overlooked and for the ultimate antagonist, Blaine Staw, the CEO of the Boroughs, who is much older than he appears, this is perfect, because no one really misses these elderly people or thinks anything of it when they die because of some fabricated reason.

Final Word:

Because the show is still very new, I tried to avoid any major spoilers. I think there are some small ones, but I don’t think it ruins the pleasure of watching The Boroughs for the first time. So, although it wasn’t meant as a miniseries, it turned out to be one, because of its cancellation. For the most part, the season ends in part, or perhaps even entirely satisfactory. No major cliffhanger or anything, a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Recommended watch!

I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
