The Boroughs is an American science fiction television series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by The Duffer Brothers, whom we know from Stranger Things. The series premiered on Netflix on May 21, 2026. In June 2026, the series was canceled after one season, even though in that same week it got cancelled, it was at number two in several streaming charts.

Premise:

Set in an idyllic New Mexico desert retreat, The Boroughs follows the residents of a luxury retirement community overseen by an unnervingly upbeat corporate staff. Their peaceful lives are shattered after they uncover a dark conspiracy involving a subterranean supernatural entity and a youth-stealing cult.

The Boroughs is dubbed as Stranger Things with seniors, which is quite accurate! An impressive cast: Alfred Molina; Alfre Woodard; Denis O'Hare; Clarke Peters; Carlos Miranda; Jena Malone; Seth Numrich; Alice Kremelberg & Geena Davis.

Given that this was a Stranger Things' follow-up series, it was expecting to get bigger numbers, which were needed because of a seasoned and therefore costly cast. It was expected to get a renewal, plans were to film seasons two and three back to back, unfortunately, Netflix cancelled the show after only eight episodes in June 2026.
