I think for me, the 3rd season is the best season, not that the first two seasons are weak or something, but the last one is just so exciting, bringing the storyline to a satisfying closure, which is always nice! This season only has 8 episodes instead of 10 like the first two seasons, most likely due to that thing that started in 2020, yes the p(l)andemic.
We continue the storyline where the kids are still alone without their parents. Judy, Penny and Will scramble to find the titanium they need to get to Alpha Centauri. Dr. Smith finds out that someone has been stealing titanium, that Will could have solved this problem within a few weeks. Will takes the blame but he knows it was the robot, because the robot felt danger. Judy is trying to contact people from the ship the Fortuna, mostly her father. John and Maureen have a hard time being apart from their children. Robot sees something coming down to the planet, he goes to investigate.
Judy find her father, after hiding the truth from him, she finally tells him who she is. Penny and Will explore a mysterious tunnel. They find robot and they learn from the robot that he is coming from this planet. Light years away, Maureen, John and Don hunt for SAR's remains. Maureen knows where she and Adler buried the remains, but it is no longer there. Back on the Jupiter, Maureen, John and Don find a robot on the ship. They think they have to defend themselves but it turns out to be Scarecrow and it has live a message from their kids.
Scarecrow helps Maureen and John plot an engine heist. But what they don’t know is that they are walking right into a trap organized by Sar. Judy returns to camp with new passengers and her father, he has to adjust to the fact that the computer has taken over almost everything! Will makes a startling discovery in the alien city, he discovers skeletons of people who have the same built as the robots. They were the builders of the robots. Dr. Smith knows she is the one who most likely has to travel to Alpha Centauri in suspension, which she has a problem with. Will convinces her that he needs her when they arrive, so she doesn’t need to be afraid she won’t be woken up.
As the adults race to destroy all clues to the location of Alpha Centauri, the Robinson kids receive an ominous message from SAR. SAR has killed Scarecrow, with this, SAR tries to lure Will to his parents, and he does, but with a twist. The kids and their parents are finally reunited but they still aren’t out of danger. While most of the people get through to Alpha Centauri, the Robinson’s Jupiter two has to change course to avoid SAR from knowing the location of Alpha Centauri.
Robinsons crash on a planet but so have the robots. They are scattered across a portion of the planet. John and Penny need to free robot, Dr. Smith and Will are together, Will is trying to reach for his duffel pack, while hanging in a tree, because the alien skull is inside there. Maureen and Judy are still on the Jupiter, their seats did not eject and they are about to be swallowed up by a large creature. Judy tries to save her mother who is sitting on a still armored chair that could go off at any time. Don is racing after his chicken when he encounters SAR. Note - The Maureen / Judy story was very interesting, as also Penny / Dad / Robot story was interesting. Judy is having a hard time always trying to live-up her mothers expectations.
The story of Don's run-in with SAR leads the Robinsons to an alarming realization. SAR can ‘feel’ when someone has been to Alpha Centauri, and through that SAR can find the planet. Will sneaks out on a dangerous solo mission. He has left a journal for Dr. Smith to find. He goes to find SAR to try and reason with him. SAR wants to know about the heart. SAR thinks Will controls robot somehow. SAR wounds Will in the heart and leaves him to die. He also tells Will that he is behind the death of his creators. Only way for Will to survive, is to go to Alpha Centauri.
Robinsons arrive at Alpha Centauri, knowing that the robots are after them, because they too know the location. There is a defense grid but only one alive who knows about this is Hastings, who is locked up. In exchange for freedom he will release and speak the code, because it is voice activated. But then he gets killed, seemingly by robot. Maureen and Judy’s dad figure that Adler also would know the code and access, she has an idea how to solve this because he is dead. They expect the robots coming but they don’t come, because they are already here, waiting and making sure the defense grid will fail. They also tried to frame robot by killing Hastings. Judy, Don have a plan, this fails however, but robot comes to the rescue. Threat from the planet is gone now but the defense grid still fails and the robots are coming from space.
As the battle for Alpha Centauri unfolds, the Robinsons and their friends risk everything to restore peace and pave the way for a better future. Penny shows how they can live in peace, when she sees a robot stuck after it just had crashed on the planet. She saves the robot and when the others do the same for other robots, their programming changes. Will goes with Dr. Smith and robot to his home planet, Will is very weak, robot tries to convince the other robots but they don’t listen. This changes when they see robot sacrificing his life for Will, to save him. This changes their mind…uhm programming. Robot leaves something of his in Will’s heart, because they still have to fight Sar and robot knew it would pierce Will’s heart again. When this happens, Sar is taken over so to speak by robot because of the piece he left in Will’s heart. This ends the war, the robots now all have their individual programming and are no longer the enemy of the humans. Note - Really enjoyed the series finale, and also the episodes leading up to it. As a matter of fact, it was a very enjoyable series, revolving around the Robinson’s. This is a re-imagining that certainly did succeed I dare say, even though I haven’t seen the original.
Final Word:
Lost in Space is a fun action adventure story, which also happens to be SCI-FI! I can only recommend this version of Lost in Space because of what I just mentioned but also because it has a satisfying ending, you can binge it with a few days, only 28 episodes and it really is just a load of fun. Don’t get me wrong, it is a serious story but it is loaded with humor. The characters are well fleshed out, the Robinsons are a tight family, I don’t think there is one Robinson that you won’t like or dislike even. Just enjoy it for what it is, a fun SCI-FI story.
