2025/XX/XX

Logan’s Run is one of many TV shows that aired during the 2nd period of the 1970’s. I remember watching it when it was on TV for the first time, but I don’t know if I’ve watched it all back then. In 2012 Logan’s Run was released on DVD in North America and I decided to purchase it. I started to watch the show twice about 13 years ago and again some 5 years later. But for some reason I did not finish it. This year I am in the 70’s zone, watched Blake’s 7’s first series, Space 1999, currently watching UFO and so I thought this was the right time to rewatch it again till the final episode.

I have to say, I enjoyed it a lot, it is actually a very interesting show, sure I have some concerns here and there, but nothing serious. I dare to say that, regarding the stories, it does stand the test of time and if it will ever be released on Blu-ray, I will purchase it for sure. The DVD set it watchable but it is very obvious that it is almost 50 years old.

Characters:

Well the premise is that Logan 5 (Gregory Harrison) and Jessica 6 (Heather Menzies-Urich) live in the City of Domes where people won’t age beyond the age of 30, they are suppose to die in the extermination ceremony known as Carousel.

Logan is a Sandman, he is with law enforcement and hunts down people, called Runners, who try to escape the City of Domes because they don’t want to die and they believe there is a place called Sanctuary where they can live being free. But when Logan begins to rebel himself and escapes with Jessica, his friend Francis 7, also a Sandman (Randy Powell), is tasked to get him and Jessica back. Francis also learns that not everyone over 30 years old is death, the city secretly run by a group of older citizens who promised Francis a life beyond the age of 30 as a city elder if he can capture the fugitives. So Logan and Jessica escape to find Sanctuary but very soon they find REM, and android, played by Donald Moffat. So REM joins them in search to find Sanctuary. They travel in the SolarCraft, a futuristic hovercraft-like vehicle, they found in an abandoned building in what was left of Washington D.C.

During their travels they of course encounter people who also had to restart after the nuclear war. Like it is a bit standard, in most of these cases, the ones they encounter usually are evil of sorts, in almost all encounters our 3 heroes must defend for their lives. What I also found peculiar, is that they have escaped and continuously searching for Sanctuary, still, they still seem close-by the City of Domes because on two occasions they return to the City which was not seem much of an effort. And also Francis is still after them and you would assume that he too still goes back to the City.

Episodes:

There are only two episodes which I found a bit weaker, the 10th episode “FuturePast” where Logan and Jessica are kidnapped by a woman named Ariana who uses a dream analyzer of them. Logan dreams he is back in the domed city and he is being interrogated by the Sandmen about how he found Sanctuary and Jessica dreams she is being forced to take part on Carousel by a sinister man who forces her to wear a mask. Unaware, Francis and a Sandman have arrived to apprehend Logan and Jesscia and Arianna isn't what she seems. Note - A weaker episode in my opinion, especially the dream sequences I found to be less enjoying. I did like the storyline about Rem and Arrianna, Rem having butterflies! The 12th episode “Night Visitors” was also an episode I found less interesting: The runners stop at a house haunted by devil-worshiping ghosts. Jessica is captured so one of the phantoms can use her as the receptacle for his dead wife's spirit. Note - Weakest of them all till now. For me the story really doesn’t fit in this series. First episode where Jessica and Logan kiss and express more than friendship to each other.

My 4 favorite episodes are: The 5th episode “Man Out Of Time”, David Eakins (Paul Shenar), a scientist time travels 200 years into the future, where he encounters Logan, Jessica and Rem, where he plans to change history and prevent the nuclear war. Can Logan, Jessica and Rem stop David from changing history? Best episode! Great but tragic ending, Eakins realizing that he himself is responsible for the nuclear war because of his Time Travel invention.

The 7th episode “The Crypt”, The runners find an underground room with six survivors of the nuclear holocaust cryogenically frozen. A series of earthquakes complicate efforts to rescue the frozen humans. Note - Strong episode, If I were Logan though, I would not take it upon me to decide who lives or dies. Guest starring most notably to me is Soon-Tek Oh, who was in a lot shows I watched over the years. He passed away in 2018.

The 11th episode, “Carousel”, Logan is shot with a dart containing a serum which erases his memory, Francis takes Logan back to the domed city, where Logan is to be terminated on Carousel for his actions, which Francis doesn't know. Meanwhile Jessica and Rem return to the Domed city to rescue Logan, who cannot remember Jessica and Rem and has loss of memory of the previous year. Can Jessica and Rem save Logan from being terminated on Carousel? And will Logan's memories be revived? Note - One of the best episodes, again, it bothers me a bit that they apparently are still so close to the City of Domes. In mean this in the sense that Voyager was two years in Kazon territory, which was way too long. It is like Logan, Jessica and Rem are driving in circles.

Episode 13, “Turnabout”, The runners are captured by desert dwellers and condemned to death. Francis attempts to rescue the trio but only for his own gain. Note - The men are despicable, treating the women as a lower lifeform, needing to cover-up their faces. Only one man, the advisor to Asa, the ruler, Samual, is a decent man, who is different than the others and wants to change it. Guest star: Gerald McRaney as Gera. Solid episode, at first I didn’t think I was going to like this episode, but it turned out to be a favorite of mine.

Concluding:

The other 9 episodes I all graded between 7 & 7.5/10, so as I said, a very decent season and a shame it only lasted one season. Gregory Harrison as Logan, definitely had a presence, he could and did carry the show as a leading man, another reason why it is a shame the show got cancelled. Jessica, a little bit gullible, but very compassionate, always wanted to help others and very perceptive. REM is the comic relief. He also makes me think of Data (Brent Spiner) of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Perhaps Data’s character was inspired by REM, just a thought. Anyway, a fun character. These 3 characters protected each other and if one of them was missing, didn’t matter who, the other two would not leave the missing one behind, no matter the danger.

Final Word:

Logan’s Run is actually a very fun TV show, a TV show that told its stories which mirrored the problems of that time. It still holds up, especially in this day and age with all the dangers we face as civilians where our governments are gambling with our lives. Yes, of course, it looks dated, in two years time it is 50 years old, but I can only recommend it and it is on me that I had the set in house for 13 years and only now I watched it completely!
