Theme - Voice-over by Joe Dawson:
He is Immortal, born in the highlands of Scotland four hundred years ago. He is not alone. There are others like him -- some good, some evil. For centuries, he has battled the forces of darkness, with holy ground his only refuge. He cannot die, unless you take his head, and with it his power. In the end, there can be only one. He is Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander.
After finishing Highlander’s third season, it is clear to me that this is by far the best season yet! This season is the standard. In my first season blog I told you that the first season was not that strong, it was as if the creators didn’t know exactly how to evolve the show from a procedural kind of show to something it now has gotten to now. Season two was a significant uptick from the first season, but season three again is a major uptick from season two.
New Characters:
Finally in season three we get to meet one of Highlander’s favorite character, Adam, aka Methos, played by one of my favorite actors Peter Wingfield. Methos first appeared in episode 16 which is also called “Methos”, the oldest immortal is more or less in hiding, pretending to be a watcher and he is “watching” himself, so he can control the fact that he hasn’t been ‘seen’ for such a long time.
Even by Mac, Methos is seen as a myth. In the third season Mac also has a new love interest, Anne Lindsey, she is a doctor, she breaks it of because MacLeod is a mystery to her medically, he doesn’t want to talk about that, he also puts himself in constant danger, which she obviously doesn’t understand. When she wants to try again, she sees Macleod making a deadly fall. Later in the season MacLeod tells her the truth about him when he invites her, via Richie, to Paris. Kalas (David Robb), a despicable immortal from back at the monastery to the present. This is not a man like Duncan, he doesn’t mind to kill, mortal or immortal human beings. And he doesn’t play by the rules, doesn’t matter to him. Kalas is a recurring character, who is there for five episodes, most likely the best episodes of the season. Kalas first appeared in the episode “Song of the Executioner”, the first part of a three parter, which did not happen to often back in the day. Methos first appears in that third part of that three-part story.
Overall Season 3:
As said, best season yet, with the introduction of The Watchers, it certainly has become more interesting than before. An interesting mythology which has been built up. That does not mean that a season is one big story-arc with and about the Watchers, in fact, it is the opposite, mostly (strong) standalone episodes and let’s say, about 5-8 episodes where the Watchers play an intricate part of the episode. This season important themes are being addressed, as for instance, a minor immortal, became immortal at the age of 10. Interesting point of view, makes you wonder how many 70+ year olds have become immortal, since most humans die around that age, of course usually not killed. We also saw an immortal who gets some sort of PTSD, who doesn’t want to fight anymore, has severe psychological issues about it. The fear of ending up alone, because every one you know dies at some point. Furthermore, We also get an episode where an immortal get overly attached to “her” immortal, that she helps him stay alive because she has information about the whereabouts of other immortals.
We even get to see Watchers coming together at Joe’s, Joe’s bar, which he opened at the beginning of the season. Richie has become a professional circuit racer on a motorcycle. Duncan finds this a risk because he becomes a public figure in a dangerous sport. What Duncan fears, happens, Richie dies during the motorcycle race, which means he has to leave the continent, being on his own for the first time. I didn’t really like that whole racing bit, it happened during two episodes, “Methos” and “Take Back The Night”. Both strong episodes but I graded them lower because of the whole racing bit. Towards the end of the season there is a serious threat that the Watchers and the Immortals are becoming public knowledge, which of course concerns Mac and Joe a great deal. It was a season with many great flashbacks, great sword fights, especially the one in the season finale against Kalas.
Few things that bothers me, it seems totally random when an immortal senses another immortal. Usually it is at least not closer than 10 meters approximately. However, in episode “The Lamb” where Kenny takes Ross’ head, for certain Kenny is almost on top of him before Ross senses Kenny. This apparently because the story needed it to be. I call this lazy writing. In the final moment of the season finale the audience sees that there was not one CD-ROM copy of the Watchers files, but at least two. The first copy was well hidden behind a photograph, but for the second copy it apparently was not so important to hide it as it was in plain sight between books on the bookshelves in the bookstore. What also annoyed me was how Amanda thought she was doing Duncan a favor by helping Kalas escape prison, so she could kill him when she clearly is no match for him, even if he didn’t have an accomplice or a sword, I mean, it amazes me how long she stayed alive after seeing her in a sword fight, especially the one against Kalas. Really stupid of her indeed, you really can say she is responsible for all the deaths that came during and after his escape. And like with Kenny and Ross, how is it that Kalas only senses her when she is on the other side of the wall, not before he gets to the wall, while she is standing on the other side?
Episodes:
Well this season I graded 14 episodes higher than an 8/10! This is really something, to me this at least means a fantastic season, I truly loved most episodes. Six episodes got an 7.5/10 and two episodes I graded a 7/10, so not one truly mediocre episodes, no bad ones either. In the word document below you can check out my grades, but to me, the first 3 Kalas episodes are my favorites, including the “Methos” episode, and the last two, the Finale two-parter, also with Kalas, are my favorite. But as I said, besides these 5 episodes I just mentioned, there are 9 (!) more episodes which I graded an 8/10 or higher.
Final Word:
With three more seasons to go, I am curious if seasons four and five will be at the same level as season three, I almost cannot imagine this! I always thought the fourth season was my favorite, but have just seen the third season, it will be a close call. So, yes, three seasons, and each season the quality got better, hopefully this will off course continue.
ps. it is difficult to find good screencaps unfortunately.
I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
