I understand this might be a bit strange, to highlight season two instead of the first season. I can try to explain it in many different ways but the truth is, I thought up this blog during the 20th anniversary DS9 1st season set blog which I did, first was released in 2003 but Highlander’s 1st season was released in November 2002. So, I was too late to do a 20th Anniversary blog about the 1st season DVD set.

Season two however, has been released on July 29th 2003 so I thought, why not create a blog for season two! Fact is, I just wanted to show you how elaborate these sets were, 8 discs per season, beautiful DVD sets, high res pictures, inner art, lots of extra’s, CD-ROM where you could read the scripts and such (although I have to admit I have misplaced these CD-ROMs of seasons two-three-four).

Back in 2002 onwards lots of my favorite 90’s shows got a DVD release, back then those sets often were big! Think of these Highlander DVD’s, Babylon 5 or the Star Trek sets. Big bulky sets, perhaps not always convenient but they definitely were impressive. In 2002 Star Trek: The Next Generation was released on DVD, 7 seasons divided over 12 months. While next year it was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s turn to be released, In November 2002 Highlander’s first season was released. Released by Anchor Bay and let me tell you, these were high quality releases and they looked beautiful as you can see on these pictures in this blog post. Anchor Bay did not release the seasons on the same schedule as Paramount / CBS did with Star Trek. It took more than two years before the series was completely released on DVD. Season Six was released on February 8th, 2005! So in that time-span both Deep Space Nine and Voyager were released on DVD in its original form.

Although the sets are gorgeous, there is one downside besides the fact that it takes up much shelf space, not one season has English subtitles on it, for native Americans perhaps not a problem, for the not native Americans it can be, let alone the people of the HoH. I am really looking forward to another rewatch, it has been 8 years since I finished my last rewatch, way too long ago if you ask me. Highlander is definitely one of my all-time favorite series, (re) watched it at least 7 times or so. A downside is, I have to rewatch alone because my partner does not like to watch it without English subtitles, she has a hard-time following the story without subs. So I have to squeeze this one in with my other rewatches and the truth is, I do not have so many free hours in a day to do many rewatches.

Beheadings:

Of course Highlander is all about the chopping heads, every episode a head is being chopped off. What I always found a pity that back then it wasn’t allowed to be shown on TV, for that reason alone I sometimes wished the show was created 5 or 10 years later when this wasn’t so much a problem anymore. In my opinion this really hurt the series that it never could be shown. But then most likely Adrian Paul wouldn’t be Duncan MacLeod, had it been created 5-10 years later, and that would not have been acceptable 😊.

Blu-ray:

About 10-15 years ago the first few seasons had been released on Blu-ray, now no longer available through regular channels. I was really eager to purchase these sets but when I learned of the dismal quality of these sets, I decided to stick to my bulky DVD sets which look, still to this day, perfect. Every Highlander season still looks as if they are only 1-2 years old instead of 18-21 years old. There was rumor few years ago that the complete series was to be released on Blu-ray by studio VEI, but so far this has not yet happened.

Final Word:

One way or another, I will soon start again with the rewatch of this favorite of mine, it will mean other shows will have to wait! Oh man, I wish I had more hours in a day to watch my favorite TV shows. These DVD sets are still available on Amazon, yes individually they are quite expensive but better quality sets you won’t find of this show. Of course, only possible, if you do have that much money to spend. Studio VEI has also released a complete series with a quite acceptable price.
