Like with Tales from the Loop, I stumbled upon this TV show from 2020 by accident. Before late 2025, I hadn’t heard about this show. Devs is a limited series, or a miniseries as they were called in the past. So, you don’t have to worry, it wasn’t intended for more than one season, so it doesn’t end on a cliff hanger. Devs is created, written and directed by Alex Garland and it premiered in March 2020 on FX on HULU. Alex Garland is known for movies like 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Dredd, Ex Machina and much more.

Premise:

Lily Chan is a software engineer at a tech company called Amaya. Her boyfriend dies on the first day he started at a department, within the same company, called Devs. A department involving quantum computing and deterministic, time-bending technology. Lily suspects the CEO of that company, named Forest, and starts an investigation surrounding her boyfriend’s death and soon she also learns that her boyfriend was not who he seemed to be.

Characters:

Sonoya Mizuno is Lily Chan, a software engineer at Amaya. Nick Offerman is Forest, CEO of Amaya / Devs. Forest has experienced a great drama not so long ago, his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident.

Jin Ha is Jamie, a cybersecurity specialist and Lily's ex-boyfriend. When Lily’s boyfriend Sergei is killed, she comes to Jamie for help. Zach Grenier is Kenton, head of security at Amaya. This man is pure evil, he does things Forest doesn’t even know, which does not mean Forest is free of guilt. Stephen McKinley Henderson is Stewart, a member of the Devs team at Amaya. Cailee Spaeny is Lyndon, a member of the Devs team specializing in work on sound waves. Karl Glusman is Sergei Pavlov, Lily's boyfriend and co-worker at Amaya. Alison Pill is Katie, the chief designer of the Devs system, also lover of Forest.

General:

It certainly is not your typical SCI-FI show, it is a slow paced, thought-provoking, intelligent piece of television. Some strong acting, I for one love Nick Offerman in this, how he plays his character Forest, but all characters are interesting and well portrayed by the actors. Basically, Devs has found a way, through projection to see back in past as well as in the future up to a point. They cannot look beyond that point in the future, but they can see as far back as for instance the crucifixion of Christ. For Forest this became an obsession when his wife and daughter died in an accident. Via the projections he is able to go back and look in on his daughter. The reason why they cannot look beyond a certain point, is unclear to Forest and Katie, who seems to be the real brains, but they do know it happens after Lily comes to Devs with a gun and kills Forest. Forest and Katie already were able to see this via the projections.

The series explores themes such as determinism and free will. Forest and Katie are convinced that everything is set in stone, there is no free will, everything has already been determined. Their view changes during the last episode. Forest reveals the project is actually named "Deus" (Latin for God), as the machine is omniscient. There basically is no difference between “real life” and life within the Deus machine.

Episodes:

Again, don’t expect an action-packed SCI-FI show, this is a slow paced, contemplating, thought-provoking TV show. If you are tired, don’t watch it, because as said, it is slow, but it definitely entertains, as long as you are open to it. Obviously, it is a season-arc storyline, the first episode I graded the lowest, a 7.5/10 and the last one I graded a 9/10, the rest in between. I loved the tensity, the mystery, the scope of it all, the world building, the landscapes, the SCI-FI part, the characters, this is really something very powerful. Sure, there were moments when I pushed the rewind button because I wasn’t paying attention enough or I didn’t understand what was happening, so I had to watch it again, but it was worth it.

Final Word:

This show makes you wonder about the possibilities, about what can be done in the future. I can only highly recommend this, the episode length of the episodes is close to an hour, but there are only 8 episodes and remember, it is meant as a limited series, so, no cliff-hanger, the last episode gives you a resolution you definitely can appreciate. Shame this hasn’t been released on physical media!

I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
