Intro:

10 years ago I did watch the original series, I did not finish it because at that time there were a lot of Marvel shows around, and it took long before the final season of Daredevil arrived, so, I lost interest because it took 2.5 years before the 3rd season arrived. I recently purchased the complete series on Blu-ray, what turned out to be a bootleg version! Still, it will give me a chance to rewatch the original three seasons but I am not sure when I get around to it.

So, when this was announced, I was kind of excited because I really did like these 3 characters Matt (Charlie Cox), Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Henson). I was very disappointed when I learned that Foggy would only be there in the first episode and that Karen only in the first and last episode. I took 6 months before I started to watch this and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the first season.

Yes, I am telling you upfront, I am not a comics fan and such, so I don’t mind if they deviate from the comic books, but I understand that people who are comic book fans and want the Marvel and DC Universe movies and TV shows inline with the comic books.

Season One Overall:

When his dear friend and colleague Foggy dies, Matt Murdock tries to leave behind his Daredevil suit, he tries to win his battles now only in the courtroom. When he learns that his longtime rival Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) is running for mayor of New York City, Matt still fights off the urge to put on the Daredevil suit again, he warns him that if he steps out of line, he will come for him. Fisk tells him that he no longer accepts vigilante’s if he becomes Mayor. As newly chosen mayor, at first it really seems that Fisk tries to turn over a new leaf. In his absence, his wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) has taken over the family business….being a crime lord that is. Fisk seems to want to go legit in a real way but during the first season we learn that he just wants to make illegality legal.

Slowly but surely Matt Murdock is being pushed into picking up his Daredevil suit again, mayor Fisk is ruling with force, he has created a task force that will only listen to him, who have privileges, they can use brute force without any repercussions, no bodycams are necessary. In the first half of the first season you see that Fisk tries to control himself, you see that he is a timebomb waiting to go off with all this bureaucracy. He has ways to elevate the pressure, for instance beating his wife’s former lover to a pulp, a man he has in captivity, assumably for a number of years now. When he shows Vanessa her former lover in captivity, she is the one who actually kills him! In the second part of season one, we see Fisk turn back to his ways from before, when he was a crime lord.

Matt Murdock learns that not Fisk but his wife Vanessa has put a hit on his friend and colleague Foggy. Even after Murdock saves Fisk from an assassination by Pointdexter, Fisk tries to kill him while he (Matt) is recuperating in the hospital. Fisk realizes that Murdock can cause trouble for him and his wife. Of course he fails. Karen returns with help, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal). She and Murdock learn why Foggy had been assassinated. They discover that Foggy found out about Red Hook Pier being a free port, exempt from any tolls and tariffs. Foggy was about to use this in court to dismiss Cafaro's charges, which would reveal a loophole Vanessa was using to earn her money, which was why she had to silence Nelson. Matt also concludes that Wilson is intending to use Red Hook Pier to build his own city-state and legitimize his crimes.

Fisk politeness is now gone and he brutally murders Chief Gallo, even his own taskforce seems to be appalled by this, given the looks on their faces. Meanwhile Frank (Jon Bernthal) is killing of many of Fisk’s men but eventually he is overtaken and captured. With others he has been locked up in Fisk’s dungeon. Frank however tricks a guard and escapes.

I am really intrigued by mayor Fisk, at first, as a viewer, you know what he has done before, that he is a criminal, a crime lord and so on. Still, when the first season starts you get the impression that he actually wants to change, wants to do good, as the season progresses we see that he gets frustrated and wants to bend the rules to keep New York City ‘safe’. We see that he actually has not changed so much as the viewer is led to believe in the beginning and when the season ends, Fisk is basically the same criminal we knew him for the first Daredevil TV show, but now he does it as the mayor of New York and because of the loophole regarding the Red Hook Pier, he can do this legitimate. When you see how he kills Chief Gallo, you again realize he is nothing more than a monster.

Regarding Matt Murdock, I really like that for a large part of the first season he wasn’t Daredevil, that he tried to solve things that happened to him and around him, without the red suit. It gave his character more depth, I didn’t mind to see less of his alter ego at first but at one point I was eager to see him put on the suit again.

Only one episode where the story-arc did not really was addressed that much, episode, “With Interest”, really liked that episode where Matt Murdock is one of the hostages in a bank robbery, an exciting standalone episode, which was very welcome to me.

Final Word:

I really did enjoy the first season, although I hear and read criticism about the first season. Not sure exactly what should be the issue with this show, it appealed to me anyways. It has already been renewed for seasons 2 and 3, So, we will at least have two more seasons to look forward to. According to IMdB Kristen Ritter will join the cast in season two as Jessica Jones, so that could be interesting. She will be there for at least 8 episodes. Elden Henson will reprise his role as Foggy at least one time in season two, most likely a flashback or something. Anyway, in two months time, season 2 will arrive on Disney!

I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
