Art Gaz Williams / Last Rewatch: 2017/07/14 - 2018/07/23 Current Rewatch: 2024/09/16 -
Plot (IMDb): Set in the twenty-fourth century and seven to eight decades after the adventures of the original crew of the starship Enterprise, this new series is the long-awaited successor to Star Trek (1966). Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the all new Enterprise NCC 1701-D travels out to distant planets to seek out new life and to boldly go where no one has gone before.
Star Trek: The Next Generation originally aired from September 28th 1987 to May 23rd 1994. It was the second live-action series bearing the name Star Trek. There also was an animated series which aired before The Next Generation called Star Trek: The Animated Series. When Star Trek: The Next Generation first aired I was aware of the show, watched an episode here and there but wasn't a strong follower.
In 1987 I temporarily wasn't into SCI-FI. I grew up with Star Trek TOS, the original Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, V, Six Million Dollar man, Incredible Hulk and also the 5th doctor of Docter Who. When I got back into SCI-FI it was approximately somewhere in 1991 or something. I began watching The Next Generation more regularly. Since then I watched The Next Generation a few times more, have watched it twice now on Blu-ray. Still, this was and will never be my favorite Star Trek show simply because I felt any typical season was uneven in regard of quality. Some superb episodes one week and a mediocre the next week. Exception perhaps for season 3. Also I enjoy more story-arc instead of episodic storytelling.
With the help of the 4 Next Generation movies which I all love, the characters helped me appreciate the TV series even more. As I said it will never be my favorite Trek but it still is very good TV most of the time. I have to say though, it's my opinion that the last two seasons there were more mediocre episodes than superb episodes. Still, I think till this day Star Trek: The Next Generation is the most popular, definitely post Star Trek TOS but I think it would be a close call between the first and second live-action series.
Of course when the Blu-ray's were released there was no doubt in my mind I would purchase every season at release date. Because I knew that the future of following Trek releases on Blu-ray (DS9 & VOY) depended on good sales of TNG's Blu-ray's. Unfortunately people hesitated too long with buying, waiting for it to go on sale instead of purchasing it right away at release date. They mainly were complaining that the season sets were too expensive, while 10 years before they purchased the DVD sets, which were even more expensive when they first came out!
