Mal is still bitter about this and it sometimes influences his judgement. Reynolds and his crew make their living through any means possible. Some of these means are legal - carrying passengers and cargo - and some are not - smuggling, scavenging and stealing. On a trip to one planet they pick up three passengers: a priest, Shepherd Book (Ron Glass), a doctor, Simon (Sean Maher), and his sister River (Summer Glau). River seems to have mental issues. Moreover, her and Simon are wanted by Federal authorities.

Firefly first aired on September 20th 2002 but before Christmas of 2002 Firefly already was cancelled after 11 out of 14 episodes produced episodes that aired. I think FOX still regrets this decision. I rewatched Firefly 2 years ago and of those 14 episodes there isn't one stinker! Really every episode is an 8 out of 10 or higher! Take Star Trek shows who often needed 2 to 3 seasons to get where Firefly was at it's first episode.

I don't know why the ratings didn't do well, perhaps it hadn't been well advertised, perhaps the genre "space western drama" set people off, I don't know. We will never know. Of course it is also the question, could Firefly have gone on for 7 seasons with the same kind of quality of episodes we now are familiar with.

Again, we will never know. Those 14 episodes are topnotch. Every few years I rewatch this and it never gets boring, quality storytelling, great group of actors. Of course the intro song is also fantactic! We fans were of course very fortunate that we got a special bonus with the movie "Serenity". One of my all time favorite movies!

Plot (IMDb): Set in the distant future, Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (played by Nathan Fillion) is the captain of the ship Serenity, a Firefly class transport. His crew are an odd assortment of characters, all experts in their fields. There's his second-in-command, Zoe (Gina Torres); the pilot (and Zoe's husband), "Wash" Washburne (Alan Tudyk); the muscle, Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin) and the engineer, Kaylee (Jewel Staite). Also onboard is a professional "companion", Inara (Morena Baccarin). She gives the ship credibility and helps it get landing rights. Mal and Zoe fought in the galactic civil war, on the side of the Independents. The war was won by the Alliance, who now rule the entire galaxy.
