Plot (IMDb): In the near future, eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering thirteen billion kilometres. With the eyes of the world upon them - everything they do is monitored, and every emotion they feel, scrutinized - they soon discover that their real assignment is not at all what they thought.
Defying Gravity first aired in August 2009, it was cancelled two to three months later and in the US only the first 9 episodes had been aired. You probably are surprised this is on my list of my favorite shows but I really like this show. Who decided to pitch the show as "Grey's Anatomy in space" really should have had his or her head checked out.
Of course, yes, there was drama, love triangles and such, which sometimes meant you were watching a soap opera. But to pitch it like that will alienate a large group of fans who normally would check this out because they are in space....sci-fi fans! Why alienate the most loyal fans in the world is really beyond me.
I wasn't there so much for the love triangles but I was there watching for the sci-fi part of the sbow and that was entertaining and good. Even the drama bit wasn't awful. But there was a spaceship, this meant a spacetravel to six or seven planets over the course of 4 or 5 seasons or something. It would have been awesome and who knows how the show would have evolved.
Here you can read how the creator of show says how the show, probably, would have ended! I say probably because you of course never know if something over the course of 4 seasons would have changed. You can also read in this piece how and why it was pitched as "Grey's Anatomy in space" and that Syfy channel was very close to buying the show. But it already aired on ABC for 2 episodes. ABC wasn't really commited to the show according to the creator of Defying Gravity, but because 2 episodes already aired on ABC, Syfy could no longer brand it as their own show.
I think it's a shame Defying Gravity did not get a chance to shine. I know, as a SCI-FI fan, we often have to deal with this but I think this really could have become something great on Syfy channel if only it had gotten a chance.
