Warehouse 13, in the same universe as Eureka. I don’t think this was established directly in the beginning of the series because otherwise Nial Matter and Erica Cerra wouldn’t have guest-starred in episode 8 “Duped” as other characters than their characters from Eureka, which is unfortunate. Warehouse 13 started 3 years after Eureka, in 2009, when the Sci-fi channel was rebranded to Syfy. I always liked Warehouse 13 better than Eureka, a few reasons: For me, WH13 is more sci-fi-ish, I absolutely love the two lead characters Pete and Myka, love their dynamic. What bothered me about Eureka, I really didn’t like how Colin Ferguson’s character Jack Carter, was always seen as a simpleton, I know this is on purpose, but it annoyed me very quickly and became very tiresome. Another reason is that Eureka has many episodes which were mediocre at best. For me this is different with Warehouse 13.
Main characters:
Well, I already said it just now but what me attracts the most about Warehouse 13 is the two lead characters Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myke Bering (Joanne Kelly). From the very beginning I enclosed these two characters into my heart, Pete because of his humor, the way Eddie McClintock portrays his character brings me a lot of laughs during every episode.
Besides his humor, he still has to become an adult in many ways, which adds to the humor of course, but he also is very protective of his colleagues, and especially of Myka, whom he cares for a great deal. When Pete gets a vibe in a certain situation, you better take it seriously because something is about to happen. Pete always blamed himself for his father’s death because he had a bad vibe when he was little about his dad, but he didn’t warn him.
Myka at first doesn’t want to be there, does not want to be there with Pete but after she accepts that this is her new assignment, she becomes comfortable with her new role, with her new partner and her other colleagues. She too is very protective of her colleagues and also especially of Pete. Although at this point, certainly from her side, it is nothing more than platonic, but it definitely is real. What I also love about her is her vulnerability, she does not have to say anything, her eyes, her look is enough to get you teared up. She is a perfectionist, very detail oriented, meticulous, wants to do everything by the rules, she memorized the Warehouse 13 rulebook unlike Pete. Myka has major feelings of guilt because her boyfriend and colleague, Sam, died on her watch. Pete is in virtually everything the opposite of Myka.
Artie Nielsen (Saul Rubinek) is Myka’s and Pete’s boss, he works in the Warehouse for many years now. On the outside, especially at first, he is perhaps not always a nice guy, I think he is not used to working with others for awhile now and so he has to adjust to his new surroundings with these new colleagues. Claudia Donovan (Allison Scagliotti) also becomes a new colleague, she blames Artie for the disappearance of her brother Joshua Donovan (Tyler Hynes). Artie thinks he is dead but Claudia knows he is still alive but in another dimension. Claudia is, besides a tech geek, also a very humoristic young woman, in a lot of times with her humor, she hides her insecurities.
Leena (Genelle Williams), is an employee of Warehouse 13 and the owner of Leena's Bed and Breakfast, which provided housing for Warehouse agents. Leena also functions as sort of a psychiatrist for the Warehouse agents. Mrs. Frederic is Artie’s boss, she has a knack to suddenly stand behind one of the Warehouse agents, as if she is teleported or something. The Warehouse agents are a bit frightened of her because of her very frightening look, because she is fierce and of course because she suddenly is behind you while you are talking.
General:
Each season, Warehouse 13 usually has a story-arc to tell, in season one this is in part also true although it is a little different because the characters have to be introduced, a few ‘get to know you’ episodes. I guess the first couple of episodes have a story-arc on its own, Myka and Pete’s transfer to become Warehouse agents, getting adjusted to the new life, new environment and the sometimes very peculiar job. Claudia hacking the warehouse from the very beginning is also a story-arc on its own, although in the season one finale you learn it is not exactly so. Claudia’s storyline regarding her brother and her becoming a Warehouse agents is finished around episode five or six. The rest of the first season slowly builds up the story arc around Artie’s former colleague James MacPherson (Roger Rees), At some point he began to believe that what the Warehouse was doing was wrong, and according to him, the artifacts belonged out in the world, a perspective which led him to go rogue and turn against Warehouse 13. The first season ends on a massive cliff-hanger where MacPherson escapes the Warehouse after being bronzed, he is helped by an Warehouse employee!
Episodes:
Well, there is only one episode I graded significantly lower than the rest, episode 10 “Breakdown”, while Artie undergoes a Warehouse style performance review, things go from a little haywire to seriously bad at the Warehouse. Note – I thought it was boring actually, the regents thing could have been interesting, should have been interesting but it really wasn’t. A bunch of complaining geezers, nothing more.
Most episodes I graded an 7.5/10 or an 8/10 but there was one which I graded a 9/10, episode 4 “Claudia”, the episode where she kidnaps Artie, so that he can help her get her brother back. Note - This was a near perfect episode in my humble opinion. Nicely built up the storyline of the hacker from the pilot on. It becomes very emotional at times, still some great humor with the banter of Myke and Pete. Pete who makes it clear that he finds Mrs. Frederic scary. Also some very tension rising scenes between Claudia and Artie.
Final Word:
It was some 6 years since I last watched Warehouse 13, really enjoying it, it looks fabulous on Blu-ray. Again, these characters make the show a success. Sure, the writing is integral, but the actors who become these characters perhaps even more. In my opinion, it was a stroke of genius to cast Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly for the roles of Pete and Myka, from the first episode I was sold. Of course, the other characters also, Claudia is also such a great character, full of humor, a clever young woman who makes me laugh so many times during an episode. Every character brings something extra to the table, Artie, Mrs. Frederic, Leena, but for me Pete and Myka are the heart of the show, their partnership, I love it. Although they are totally different characters, they do remind me of Mulder and Scully, from the X-Files of course. Looking forward to season two!
I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
