Intro:
It took a while to finish the third season of 13 episodes, almost two months. As I said in my earlier Warehouse 13 blogs, I really am enjoying watching it again. These four characters, Pete, Myka, Artie and Claudia are the heart of the show, they make the show for what it is.
Overall season three still mostly is episodic, but in the background a story-arc is building of which we see titbits in the first half of the season, just a bit of teasing, to get us excited. To me, this is the best way, combining episodic and story-arc, I must admit I have had my fill of heavy story-arced seasons without any room for breathing. Warehouse 13 does this perfectly.
The further we get into the third season, the more story shifts from episodic to the main story-arc that ran on the back burner for most of the season. Still, there is enough humor to lighten the mood and there still also is enough character development. As I said in my previous blog, this was also how it was done in Babylon 5 and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
New characters:
In season 3 we get one new regular character, and multiple recurring characters. In the first episode Steve Jinks (Aaron Ashmore) is introduced as a new Warehouse 13 agent because Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) has decided to leave Warehouse 13 after feeling guilty about supporting HG Wells who betrayed that trust, which almost resulted in many deaths. Ashley Williams plays Sally Stukowski, a dirty FBI agent. She is loyal to Marcus Diamond, played by Sasha Roiz and Walter Sykes, played by Anthony Michael Hall, the two main villains of the third season and it turns out, these guys are truly evil, no gray areas, which I find a shame. Pete’s mother Jane Lattimer, played by Kate Mulgrew, is also a regent but Pete never knew this. Not recurring, although in season four she will be back one more time, Jeri Ryan, who is Pete’s former wife Amanda Lattimer. How many Star Trek alums did we see in the first three seasons already, and there is at least one more on the way!
Overall:
The relationship between Myka and Pete is still what interests me most. When the season starts, Pete has lost Myka as a colleague, she no longer is a Warehouse agent and works in her parents’ bookstore. What becomes clear in later episodes is that Pete really has a hard time with her leaving him. Even when she returns to the Warehouse, Pete still is not himself because he still wrestles with this. Myka realizes that Pete has issues with people leaving him all his life, and now she also did that to him. At the moment their relationship is still platonic, but you can feel there is something underneath that.
Claudia immediately is attracted to Steve, not as a lover but someone who is closer to her own age. For Steve becoming a Warehouse agent also has an impact on her duties because she now gets away on missions, usually with Steve. Steve has a special gift, he can tell when someone is lying, he is a real lie detector which can come in real handy in their daily work. In a short time, they’ve become close friends and colleagues. Even when Steve is supposedly fired from his job, Claudia still considers him a friend.
Artie is Artie, he slowly is changing from an anti-social person to a more amical guy who becomes a bit of a father figure to all four agents. Meanwhile, Artie himself is in love with Dr. Vanessa Calder, trying to pick up the nerve to ask her out on a date, faking injuries so she can come by to treat him. He is a grown man, but he lacks the social skills to be around women, especially ones he has a thing for, like with the Doctor.
Storyline:
The general storyline this season is Walter Sykes who wants his revenge on the Warehouse, he blames them and Jane Lattimer because she took the bracelet from him, the Collodi's Bracelet was the reason he could walk again. Jane Lattimer took it from him because the artifact had a negative side effect, it "planted a seed of darkness" within the wearer, and after the bracelet was taken away from him, he was confined once more to a wheelchair and now wants revenge. Sykes was collecting artifacts for years, which helped him get into the Warehouse. He had two accomplices doing most of his bidding, Marcus Diamond, who was a detective which had been shot in the line of duty. Afterwards, Walter Sykes arranged for him to be revived by an unknown person via Johann Maelzel's Metronome. The bullets that killed him remained in his heart. The other accomplice is Sally Stukowski, who was an FBI agent. At some point she became employed by Walter Sykes, but when she was no longer needed after she failed a mission, she was killed. Sykes definitely is one of Warehouse 13’s most fearsome adversaries, who in cold blood killed a Warehouse 13 agent. As said, while all above is happening, in between, there are enough episodes that stand on their own.
Episodes:
I only had one episode which I wasn’t really fond of, but I also have to say, I was very tired when I was watching this, episode 9 “Shadows”, where we learn more about Sykes and his disability and Jane Lattimer who feels responsible for making him so dangerous. “Trials”, episode two is definitely one of the best episodes this season. This one is about Myka coming back to work, her doubts, the nervousness. It turns out she was on probation and she passes; she officially is a Warehouse agent again. Myka realizes that Pete has issues with people leaving him all his life, she also did that to him. Final scenes got me all choaked up again. What she does with her face, she gets me every time. I also liked the Jeri Ryan episode “Queen for the Day”, a revelation that they were married in the past. It seems to me that Myka is a bit jealous. “Emily Lake”, episode 11 is also fantastic, where the story-arc about Sykes is really heating up. Steve is undercover in Sykes’ organization; Pete still has a grudge against H.G. Wells and Sykes kills a Warehouse agent. Episode 12 “Stand”, is, to me, the best episode this season. An emotional rollercoaster ride, the death of a Warehouse agent, H.G. Wells’ death and Mrs. Frederic death. This episode has it all but beware of the reset button. The bad guy, Sykes, really is bad, the whole episode he is nothing more than a nasty piece of garbage. To be honest, I much rather get a character who is not so one dimensional.
Final Word:
Another strong season, I cannot choose which of the first 3 seasons is the best, really difficult but what I can tell you is that season 3 is simply fantastic. Higher stakes, dangerous villains, a new Warehouse agent, Myka, who comes back, Pete has difficulty dealing with the fact that Myka left him, Artie falling in love with the Doctor, Claudia’s worst nightmare comes true. Back then I was satisfied with just 4.5 seasons, I say this because season 5 is only 6 episodes. Now I wish we would have 1 or 2 seasons more, because this is just very good storytelling.
I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
