FYI:
Regarding the blogs I write, I always first write this in Word, than I copy it to the website. But for some reason, I am no longer able to copy paste including the links I have added, this is very frustrating because I used many links (sources), so you can verify what I write down. Because It would take too much work to again create all the links for this blog, I added this blog in a Word document at the end of this blog with all the links for you to check out if you feel the need or the urge! Sorry for the inconvenience!
2025/01/12
I had the urge to write again about cancellations, new seasons, new shows, Blu-ray releases and such. About 16 months since my last one, it always becomes a very lengthy blog and that is probably why it took me so long to start writing another one. As I said, it has been a while so I am going to wing it, hope you will find it an informative blog. Because it has been so long, I most likely will also go back a bit further with telling you about shows which have been cancelled early last year.
Cancellations / Ending shows:
Halo is the first show I want to address, personally I really liked it, but it has been cancelled after two seasons! In 2014 it was already announced, it took 8 years before it got onto our screens, and now it’s cancelled, shame. A new home is being sought, but you know as well as I do that this almost never happens. Beacon 23 has also been cancelled after its 2nd season. Lena Headey in the lead role. Seen most of the 1st season, never got around to finish it. Orphan Black: Echoes was cancelled after its 1st season. Watched the pilot, but somehow did not go further with it. The Time Bandits was also cancelled after its first and only season. To be honest, I haven’t watched this.
The Acolyte was also cancelled after only 8 episodes, one season. Watched the first two episodes, wasn’t really my cup of tea and it bugged me immensely that Carrie-Anne Moss was killed off in such a stupid way in the first episode. Later I learned that after episode 3 the show went woke. A few shows that end after their current or near in the future season: The Handmaid’s Tale ends after 6 seasons. Haven’t watched this in a long time, think I stopped in the middle of season 4. Snowpiercer will end with its 4th and final season. Superman and Lois also has ended its run after 4 seasons. La Brea has ended after a shortened 3rd season.
Renewals for 2025 or beyond + a Star Trek TV Movie!
First it would be a TV series, it became a movie for streaming, Star Trek: Section 31. It will stream on January 24th, I watched the trailer, it looks nothing like the Star Trek I know. Furthermore, a TV movie about a super secret organization which most of the Federation, except for a few high ranking officials, have no knowledge of! I don’t think I need to say more, rubbish! Severance, a TV show from Apple+ got renewed and after a long wait, season two arrives January 17th. I watched the first season and although slow-going, it did grab me, look forward to season two. The Last of Us, first season was January 2023, in April 2025 we get to see season two! Silo is currently running in its 2nd season and recently it was announced that the show was renewed for not one but two seasons! The 4th season however, will conclude the series, which is great news to me.
Recently also FROM was renewed for a 4th season. I wouldn’t have minded if this would have been a similar renewal like Silo, to have it renewed for 2 more seasons and conclude it with its 5th, unfortunately this wasn’t the case, what is even worse, it won’t be back until early 2026. I just hope we will live to actually see a conclusion. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has also been renewed for two seasons, don’t think the 4th will be its final season though. 3rd season will air sometime this year. I sure hope we will not get another musical, because then I will be done for sure with the show. Star Wars: Andor, I have been waiting for that show to return for 2 years now. Just finished rewatching the first season, thought this was some really good TV. Season two will be back April 22nd.
Star Wars: Ahsoka has also been renewed for a second season, will be streaming most likely sometime this year. Star Wars: The Mandalorian will return in 2025, not with season 4 but with a cinematic movie! I’d rather have a season 4 instead, but yeah, that’s me. Fallout has also been renewed for season two, really looking forward to this too, not sure when we will see it though, but this apparently was a ratings success! Because of the LA fires, filming season two has been halted. Resident Alien will also be back with its 4th season, hopefully this year but this currently is not clear. It is one of the best shows Syfy has had since The Expanse and Dark Matter, albeit a different show. For All Mankind has been renewed for a 5th season, will most likely stream this year. Wouldn’t mind if this would be the final season. Not that I am bored with it, but I want a satisfactory conclusion to this. A Spin-off has also been ordered, called “Star City”.
Doctor Who had its X-mas special last month. I learned that the ratings for this X-mas special were the lowest of all X-Mas specials. Season two of the revamped Doctor Who will be back this year. I really think the BBC should take a break from the series, let it rest for 5 to 10 years and then come back fresh, I am saying this for many years now but of course, why would they listen to me! I’ve quit watching Doctor Who a long time ago, middle of series 9, don’t feel the need to watch this any longer. My Doctor Who rewatches end with series 7.
Twisted Metal streamed on Peacock in 2023, it was renewed for a second season but it has yet to be released. I think we can expect it this year. For me it hasn’t been that long, I’ve watched it the first season somewhere in the summer of 2024. Apple+ has also renewed Dark Matter for a 2nd season. Not to mix this up with the show with the same name on Syfy from 2015-2018. I reckon it will arrive in the last quarter of 2025. 3 Body Problem has also been renewed, and when I check IMdB, it seems like it has been renewed for not one but two seasons, at least, I see 3 seasons in the episode guide. It however doesn’t reflect that in the news item. The Boys has been renewed for the 5th and final season, which will stream in 2026. Sugar has also been renewed for a second season! Well when I started watching this, I had no clue this was going to turn out something sci-fi! I can only recommend this. If season two will streams this year, it will be in the last quarter of 2025. I wouldn’t be surprised if this will be stream no earlier than 2026.
Invasion and Foundation both have been renewed for their 3rd seasons. Supacell, which streams on Netflix, has been renewed for season two. I have not seen this yet. The British Black Mirror has been renewed for series 7. Always unsure when it actually returns. Monarch: The Legacy of Monsters has also been renewed for a second season, which most likely will stream sometime this year. That apparently is not all, besides a season two, we apparently also are getting spin-offs of the show! Dune Prophecy has also been renewed for a 2nd season, still have to watch it but I did hear good things about it. The 5th and final season of Stranger Things will stream this year on Netflix! Gen V, the spin-off from The Boys, has been renewed for a 2nd season. According IMdB, The Sandman should also return this year with its 2nd season. The Way Home was renewed for a 3rd season, which is currently airing on the Hallmark Channel. I haven’t seen it, so I cannot give judgement about this.
Future unknown
The Ark has not yet been renewed at this point for a 3rd season and I believe it is not yet clear if it will get a new season. Same can be said for Teacup, a sci-fi / horror show I guess, I did like the first season, no news about a season two. I am hoping the positive news will eventually come. Not sure if there will be a 3rd season of Loki.
New shows
Well, I think we all are looking forward to the new Alien series called Alien: Earth! It is expected to be released in the summer of 2025 on Hulu. Lanterns has been ordered by HBO. Daredevil: Born Again, will be released in March 2025. Looking forward to this one, was announced in 2022 I believe. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is also on the horizon, not one but two seasons have been ordered, most likely will not available to stream before 2026. No, I am not really looking forward to this. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is out since December 3rd, 2024. Not sure if this will be renewed or not.
Rumors, Bargains and lies!
Well Battlestar Galactica reboot has been a rumor for many years now, perhaps more than just a rumor, early 2024, a new showrunner was being announced! So you would think this would actually happen! There are also rumors that there will be a reboot of some sorts of the Knight Rider! I think I would be interested in this, if it is done well. There is even talk of a combination of old TV shows being brought back besides the Knight Rider, like Airwolf and the Six Million Dollar Man, but I take this with a grain of salt, although it would be kinda cool.
Well, you know as well as I do that rumors tend to turn out to be nothing unfortunately. Reboots of Stargate, Galaxy Quest, Buck Rogers have all been rumored for a few years now, but nothing happened. Not to speak of Babylon 5, makes me angry when I think about that. Star Trek: Legacy would be something I am interested in, because it follows up after Star Trek: Picard and the movie Nemesis. There are also Firefly rumors floating around….would love to see that.
Sci-Fi TV Shows on Blu-ray / 4K in 2024:
In 2024 there were a number of interesting releases, the most important one, at least, that is how I see it, is Series One of Blake’s 7. Originally aired in 1978, totally restored, you can even choose to watch the episodes the original special effects or new and updated special effects, which have been done properly and with respect to the time it was aired. Other releases which I want to mention are: Halo – Season Two, a standard release, shame the show has been cancelled. Disney released a buch of shows in Steelbook on Blu-ray and 4K: The Mandalorian season 3; Ahsoka season 1; Andor season 1, Loki season 2 and a few more. Resident Alien’s 3rd season was released on Blu-ray, the first season of Severance, the complete series of Orphan Black: Echoes. Shows I am waiting for (which will probably will never be released): Project Blue Book – season 2; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D seasons 6 & 7 in Europe; Lost in Space (2018) seasons 2 and 3, the most important one for me: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!
Anniversaries 2024 / 2025
In 2024 there were some very interesting anniversaries, shows like Babylon 5; Farscape; Crusade; Stargate Atlantis; Warehouse 13; Lost; Buck Rogers; Stargate Universe and Roswell had their anniversaries.
In 2025 there are also some very interesting anniversaries coming: Star Trek: Voyager; Doctor Who (2005); Dark Matter; UFO; Space 1999; Threshold; Space Above and Beyond; Andromeda and The Expanse, to name a few. Like in 2024, I will also write a few blogs for the various shows I just mentioned. To get an overview of all shows which have an anniversary of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45 years, please check out the Blog page or the Overview of all Sci-Fi TV shows page.
Final Word:
Wow, about 2 pages shorter than my last updates blog from September 2023. I tried to be a bit more to the point and with all the links I added, you can check out the sources if you have the urge! I hope you’ve found this an interesting read, I think I was complete with this overview of news, if you think I missed something, please let me know in the comments. If I will think of something myself, I will update this blog or write it down in the comments section.
