Followed up from BLOG December 2020

Intro:

It’s that time again, I want to inform you about the latest news regarding (live-action) SCI-FI TV Shows. So what is the status of certain announced TV projects, when will they arrive? What about the 2nd or 3rd season, when is it due to arrive? Rumors/speculations, there is anticipation about certain TV shows, nothing official yet, mostly rumors, sometimes confirmed by someone close to the project but not officially announced.  And then there are anniversaries, TV shows which are having their anniversary in 2021, starting from 10th anniversary till the 55th anniversary! And finally I would like to touch upon Blu-ray releases, although this will not be a big part since little has been released this year on Blu-ray!

Regarding the news and updates I’ll try to do it chronologically but in most cases the definite airdate is not yet announced so, it will be hard to that in most cases. Rumors, Anniversaries and the Blu-ray sections will be discussed separately from the news and updates about TV Shows and their seasons. If there is a new trailer I will add a link here so you can check it out easily. Again, like last time, back in December 2020, it’s a long list of shows.

Cancelled:

Unfortunately two shows I was watching, have been cancelled last month! Debris is cancelled after only one season. To be honest, I had a hard time keeping awake while watching this, because it was kind a slow. Still I would have hoped to see a 2nd season because the premise was interesting. What bothers me more is the cancellation of Manifest! Cancelled after its 3rd season. I was pleasantly surprised it got past the first and second season because you’d expect that these kinds of shows get cancelled after its first season. It’s a shame the story is not allowed to be completed, perhaps it is even a crime! The creator tried to find a new home for Manifest but unfortunately he did not succeed. Also cancelled after only 1 short season, Jupiter’s Legacy which is streaming on Netflix. Odd thing is that Netflix did order a spinoff!

Renewals and other News:

Made for Love, HBO Max, has been renewed on June 28 for season two. This will probably be back same time next year, April or May. Also renewed and due back early next year is Snowpiercer for a 3rd season. Still haven’t seen the first two seasons. It is still quiet around CW’s Pandora, still no word yet if it is going to be renewed or cancelled. I believe all the other CW SCI-FI shows have been renewed. So these most likely will return in October or midseason, including the reboot of The 4400! According to IMDb the first episode will air on October 25th, 2021.

Currently there are a few shows running which you can consider SCI-FI or at least parts of it. War of the Worlds, runs on Network EPIX, FOX, in season 2 (Trailer S2). Haven’t seen anything of it myself, but planning to do so in the future. Motherland: Fort Salem is currently airing season 2 on Freedom network. Here also a trailer for the second season. Y: The Last Man is only two months away from airing! September 13th, 2021. You can see a few tidbits in this trailer. Foundation is one I really am looking forward to! Just seen the 2nd trailer and it sure has my attention. Release date is September 24th, 2021. Invasion, from Apple+. Few weeks ago a trailer has been released. Also an interesting one, Apple+ is getting into SCI-FI with For All Mankind, Foundation and Invasion! Release date Invasion is October 22nd, 2021. Last but not least of course is Loki, which is streaming on the Disney channel, which seems to be very successful!

Then it becomes a bit more difficult, because now we have to speculate the release dates of all that comes next. Another Life, with Katee Sackoff, was renewed for a 2nd season although audience did not really seem to appreciate the first season. I watched the whole season, also was not really impressed with it but still am interested in a second season. Season 2 is expected to arrive late summer or early fall. Lost in Space, also on Netflix is also expected to arrive in Q3 of this year so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for this because I am really looking forward to this, especially season two was very good. Stranger Things, also Netflix, will hopefully also be released in 2021. We’ve been waiting a long time for this but it is entirely possible it will be 2022 when we first see season 4.

What more can we probably expect this year, 2021? Well, that’s quite a few shows which are new or having a new season! Star Trek: Discovery probably will get to our screens late 2021. The Orville, according to this website, Hulu confirmed that The Orville will return in 2021 with its third season. Let’s hope this is indeed the case. The Boys’ 3rd season is also expected to release this year on Amazon. Still have to check this out, hearing only good things about it. Marvel’s Hawkeye is also due in 2021 but nothing confirmed yet. The Mandalorian, already confirmed that the 3rd season will be released in December 2021! The Book of Boba Fett, spinoff from The Mandalorian, most likely will also premiere in December 2021. Season 13 of Doctor Who will also arrive in 2021, no definite date yet. It is highly probable this will be Jodie Whittaker’s final season. Question on my mind, isn’t it better stop for a few years, I myself stopped watching during Peter Capaldi’s first season. Not that he wasn’t good, because he was, but the stories are getting weaker for a long while now. Let it rest and come back in 5 years or something.

The Expanse, according to this website, the start of the 6th season is scheduled in December 2021. This is good news, without a doubt the best SCI-FI show currently out there! Ms. Marvel, also scheduled for 2021, here is a link to the teaser trailer which came out 2 weeks ago. The last one I hope we will see in 2021 is Avenue 5! It’s a comedy in space, either you like it or you hate it. I like it, took me a few episodes but it’s fun. Hugh Laurie (House), plays the Captain. If you have no idea, here is a look at first season’s trailer. According to this website, Westworld will return in the fall of 2021. I was surprised by that, thought it would be no earlier than 2022. Let’s hope they are correct.

What can we expect in 2022? Well it’s a long list also, I don’t think there even has been a time when there so much SCI-FI on TV as now. Before it was always the 1990’s which was THE decade of SCI-FI but this time period is gaining or perhaps even overtaking the 90’s. Star Trek: Picard is expected to return with its second season early in 2022, within the first 3 months. Here you have a link to the season 2 trailer with a very familiar face! Also expected early in 2022 with season 2, Resident Alien, one of best new shows this year in my opinion. For All Mankind , from creator Ronald D. Moore, was already renewed for season 3 before season 2 started. I also expect this show to return with its third season with the first 3-4 months in 2022. The Nevers, first part of the first season aired in the spring of 2021, the second part of season will air in 2022, I expect also spring but no way of knowing yet. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the first season has been split up with such a long period.

Raised by Wolves is expected to return in the summer of 2022, same for The Handmaid’s Tale of which the fourth season just ended a few weeks ago. Fifth season will probably return around the same time in 2022. Hopefully we will see Star Trek: Strange New World early in 2022, really looking forward to this, mainly because of Captain Pike. I think this will blast Star Trek: Discovery away! Last week I read a new story about Halo, almost 10 years in the making but now finally seems to be ready to come to our screens in 2022. The Man who Fell to Earth, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, will also premiere in 2022. Is also a TV show which has a certain attraction, seems intriguing. Alien the TV Series, just read a story that the camera’s start rolling in spring 2022. What does this mean in terms of release date, I think early 2023 but perhaps there is a chance it will be earlier, late 2022.

More Marvel and Star Wars shows:

A lot is coming, lots of Marvel shows, lots of Star Wars shows. Some of them I believe in 2022 and some of them in 2023. I checked if there was anything more data available regarding these shows but this wasn’t the case. Please check my blog from 6 months ago. There I added the links also to the individual shows. I hope I can update some of these with my next “upcoming TV Shows” blog in December 2021 or January 2022.

New projects recently announced:

Some upcoming news I informed you about on the news page of this website. Wool, Wyrd, Hello Tomorrow, Paper Girl, Buck Rogers and Demimonde. Of course Buck Rogers is the one that intrigues me the most. Apparently George Clooney is behind this project. Another new project involves a documentary! Of course I mean the Star Trek: Voyager documentary, which hopefully will be ready in the fall of next year. On the crowdfunding page the Blu-ray is expected to be shipped in October 2022. I hope this documentary is as exciting as the DS9 doc “What We Left Behind”.

Rumors, Hopes and very much wanting:

Of course everybody knows Amazon now has the rights of Stargate, which means a step closer to a new Stargate series! Joseph Mallozzi surprised me with the announcement that he is developing a mini series of one of my favorite SCI-FI shows of the last decade: Dark Matter! This to me is almost just exciting as having a new Stargate TV series! There is more! Sanctuary reboot, is also still in development! I know, it is hard to believe, especially with all 3 shows actually coming back to us, but I would settle for 2 out of 3! Which ones….take a guess! 😊 Another rumor that does not want to die so perhaps there is some truth in it, a Sliders reboot! There even already is a new page on IMDb for this one. A page with no info I might add. The reboot of Battlestar Galactica has been announced back in 2019, it is a bit quiet for a while now.

Anniversaries:

The year 2021 has lots of TV shows which have their anniversary of 10,15,20,25 or even 55 years! The first one this year is a British show called Outcasts. It was 10 years ago when the first episode aired on February 7, 2011. I thought it was a wonderful show, sadly only lasted one season, 8 episodes. The Lone Gunmen celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year! The spinoff from The X-Files debuted on March 4th 2001. Sadly The Lone Gunmen lasted only one short season of 13 episodes. I have written an anniversary blog about it back in February this year. Next one, perhaps some of you never even heard of it, is Special Unit 2, in April 2001 the first episode aired on Sci-Fi Channel. It lasted only two short seasons (6 and 13 episodes), but it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it very much. I only saw it once, 12 years after its initial release. So Special Unit 2 is having its 20th Anniversary this year! Hopefully I am able to watch it again in the near future. Eureka is having its 15th Anniversary in July, the first episode aired on the (then still called) Sci-Fi Channel on July 18th 2006. Eureka is arguably one of Syfy’s most successful TV shows. I wrote a little blog because of this 15th Anniversary, it’s on line right now, rewatched it back in 2019. Of course also Star Trek TOS has its 55th (!) Anniversary in September. At the moment I haven’t prepared or already created a blog, but I probably will write one in the coming months.

The Pretender is celebrating its 25th Anniversary on September 19, 2021! In my opinion, this is one of best TV shows of all time. It’s a shame it was cancelled after 4 seasons with a cliff-hanger, such a rich story. Two TV movies were made, three were planned! So again, the show wasn’t allowed to end satisfactory. I already have written de 25th Anniversary blog, I will post it in the coming weeks here. Dark Skies also celebrates its 25th Anniversary, on September 21st 2021. Dark Skies has been created on the success of The X-Files of course. Dark Skies only ran one season but it really makes an impression. Because I rewatched this earlier this year in April, I created a combo rewatch/25th Anniversary blog which is already live on the website. Next up, Person of Interest, one of my favorite shows of the past decade, on September 22nd it celebrates its 10th Anniversary. What was partly SCI-FI then, is almost “normal” now. I have already written a 10th Anniversary blog which I will post in the coming weeks also. You can find it here in a few weeks.

Terra Nova has its 10th Anniversary on September 26, 2021. Cancelled after only one season, while the season finale and thus also series finale was very exciting! I very much would have liked a second season based only on that finale! I’ve also written a combo of rewatch/10th Anniversary blog like with Dark Skies because I rewatched this earlier this year. Two more to go! Second to last is one of my  favorite shows: Star Trek: Enterprise! On September 26, 2021 it will celebrate its 20th Anniversary! A show which was cut way too short, only four seasons, it is a real shame and a crime, Star Trek: Enterprise deserves way better than that. It probably doesn’t surprise you that I’ve already written a 20th Anniversary blog about Enterprise and I will post this one here in the coming weeks. The last one I want to mention is Smallville, which, like Star Trek: Enterprise, also celebrates its 20th Anniversary, in October 2021. I have to admit, I did watch every episode of Smallville, seen the series finale somewhere in 2013 or something, but after that I never rewatched any of it. So I am not sure if I have enough inspiration to write a 20th Anniversary blog about Smallville. So I cannot guarantee that there will be a blog for this show. Cannot forget Lexx, 25th Anniversary this year! So these are the anniversaries for 2021, 12 of them. So for most of them I already written/or I will write an Anniversary blog.

Blu-ray releases 2021:

In the first six months of 2021 only a handful SCI-FI TV shows have been released on Blu-ray. Don’t think it’s ever been this low. I can only think of two: Stargate Universe, the Complete series, which was only released in the United States. Also Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Season 7 which has only been released in Japan. In July 2021 we can expect the third season of Star trek: Discovery and in September a re-release of Star Trek TOS, that’s it! Hopefully there will be a few more releases towards the end of this year but I can’t imagine it will be much since Apple+ shows and Marvel shows rarely or not get a physical release, let alone a Blu-ray release. What really bugs me is that we will probably never get the final two seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Blu-ray in Europe, Australia or The United States. In my last blog from December 2020 I also was in the assumption that in March of 2021 one of my all-time favorite shows, Babylon 5 would be released on Blu-ray! Unfortunately this did not happen, not a physical release only on streaming in HD. Hopefully if this does well, B5 will get a chance on Blu-ray!

Final word:

Well this is a huge pile of info! Just takes a few days to read it! 😊 I hope you liked it, although it is a lot, I’ve had a fun time writing it. Next “Upcoming …” will be in December 2021 or January 2022, hopefully at that point there is more info about the release dates of several Marvel and Star Wars shows. If you have any suggestions or remarks, please leave them in the comment section below.

Just read about an upcoming HBO TV show called The Last of Us, with Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Anna Torv (Fringe). Could be interesting. Aiming for 2021 release of its first season.
