Last week Disney+ surprised everybody with the announcement of several new TV Shows (not sure how to call them not since they’re on a streaming platform). Not just one or two, no, perhaps 10-15 TV Shows! Several Star Wars and Marvel shows have been announced. Some regular TV shows and also some are limited. It’s always the question if it’s real sci-fi, are there only sci-fi elements or are they more in the vein of fantasy. So as long as we are not entirely sure we will assume there are at least some sci-fi elements in it. Besides Star Wars and Marvel shows there are also some other sci-fi shows on the horizon, which I also addressed in this blog.
I would like to go with you through the (possible) upcoming live-action shows. If available, I will add a link to a trailer so you have an idea what the show is about. I also would like to address possible new Blu-ray releases. I will also discuss the already existing TV shows’ upcoming seasons, when you can expect them to arrive. Also already addressed a bit in this blog. But I think it’s nice to have this all in one overview. I will try to do it in chronologically in terms of release but most of the time I think it’s too soon for that so it will be estimation. It’s really a lot, new shows plus new season info about 40+ shows.
The First one to arrive is of course the 5th season of The Expanse on Amazon Prime on December 16. Amazon Prime renewed the show it’s 6th and last season. However the writers of The Expanse, don’t want to speak of a cancellation but more of a pause! They apparently intent to come back with season 7 and beyond! When can we expect season 6? I believe same time next year in 2021. Trailer for the 5th season, click here.
On January 1st a special of Doctor who will air, Revolution of the Daleks. Season 13 will air somewhere in 2021 but at the moment I don’t have a clue when. I myself stopped watching Doctor Who during its 8th season. I liked Capaldi as the Doctor but the stories had become too weak for me to keep watching each week. Check out the trailer here for the special.
Wanda Vision is next up, streaming on Disney+ from January 15th 2021. It’s a limited series, at least to begin with. I believe the episodes are approximately 25 minutes (not sure). Is a spin-off from Avengers: Endgame (2019). To see the WandaVision trailer, click here.
Snowpiercer will return with its 2nd season on January 25th, 2021. Haven’t seen the 1st season myself yet but I hear it’s okay. Have to check it out next year. Of course this is spawned from the movie with Chris Evans (Marvel’s Captain America). See here the teaser trailer for season 2. Snowpiercer 1st season is set to be released on Blu-ray in North America on January 26th, 2021. One day after the 1st episode of season 2 can be seen on Netflix.
Next up is Resident Alien with Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) as the Alien. Really looking forward to this show mainly because I really like Tudyk. It follows a crash-landed alien named Harry who takes on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth. First episode will air on Syfy on January 27, 2021. Click here to see the trailer.
For All Mankind – From Apple TV, already renewed for a 3rd season while the 2nd season is due to stream on February 19th, 2021 – Premise for those haven’t seen the 1st season: In an alternative version of 1969, the Soviet Union beats the United States to the Moon, and the space race continues on for decades with still grander challenges and goals. See also season 2 trailer here.
I don’t follow any of the CW shows anymore but I thought it was good to mention them here. The Flash, which I stopped watching when they had their musical episode, will return with season 7 in 2021, February 23rd . Roswell, New Mexico will be also back in 2021, not sure when, with its 3rd season. Legends of Tomorrow will also be back in 2021 with its 6th season. Supergirl, Stargirl will both be back in 2021. Superman and Lois, CW’s new TV show will arrive on February 23rd with its 1st season. Pandora, is ending it’s 2nd season as we speak. Not seen anything of this yet, IMDb rating indicates it’s fluff but perhaps I will check it out sometime…or not! See season 2 trailer here.
On March 19, 2021 Falcon and the Winter Soldier will arrive, of course also a spin-off from the Captain America movies. It is a limited series with the same actors as in the movies which is an added bonus. The Winter Soldier movie is my favorite Marvel movie. Click here to see the trailer.
On that same date March 19, 2021, it is currently a possibility that one of my all time favorite TV shows Babylon 5 will be released on Blu-ray! There were rumors for a few months now that Babylon 5 is being released in HD. Now sure if it is upscaled like the Farscape release, or real HD but frankly I wouldn’t care! The current DVD sets are horrible so even upscaled it will make a big difference! No details yet but here you can see some comparisons between SD and HD. On this Swedish website you can already pre-order the complete series on Blu-ray!
Loki, limited series, will arrive in May 2021. Of course also a spin-off from the Marvel movies. Looks kind of interesting but I find Loki a fun character in the Marvel movies. Click here to see the trailer.
The Handmaid’s Tale’s 4th season is to air early in 2021 but not definite date yet. Earlier this week it has also been renewed for a 5th season, so before the 1st episode of the 4th season has aired! See here the 5th season announced from the cast of the show. Also expected, somewhere mid-2021, Lost in Space. I absolutely loved season two, much better than its first season which wasn’t bad either. Season 3 will sadly be its last but the creators of the show knew this at the time of renewal so I believe this will be wrapped up nicely. Click here for a season 3 trailer, sort of…
Next, Another Life, with Katee Sackoff (Battlestar Galactica, The Mandalorian) in the lead role. The show wasn’t very well received by the viewers, on IMDb it only has a 5.0 rating. Still Netflix renewed the show because probably enough people watched it. I tend to also give it another chance but I too wasn’t very impressed with the first season. Check out the season 2 trailer here. No definite release date yet but expected to be released in 2021 and it’s my estimation it will be sometime around the summer.
When I first watched Avenue 5, I did not expect to watch the following episodes. It was kind of a strange setting, a cruise ship in space. Still I stuck with it and I have to say, although it’s not great, it is entertaining, at times funny, you really have to get through the 1st two episodes and then I think you will like it or hate it, nothing in between. Avenue 5 has been renewed for a 2nd season so I think there were enough people who kept coming back to watch it. No season 2 trailer available yet, therefore I have a link to the 1st season trailer here.
Now it’s becoming more and more difficult to estimate when a certain new show will be released, will air or streamed, so keep that in mind.
Foundation is also slated to arrive in 2021, no definite date yet. This one looks very interesting to me, perhaps in the vein of Babylon 5, The Expanse? Really looking forward to this. See trailer here.
I think Star Trek: Picard’s 2nd season will be available somewhere late 2021, perhaps somewhere between September and December. Picard also has been renewed for a 3rd season already which is back2back in production with the 2nd season. No season 2 trailer available yet. I see on IMDb page first season 2 episode should air in January 2021 but I find that very hard to believe.
Also late 2021 we finally will see the 3rd season of The Orville on Hulu. Production started again last week, they were halfway through the season, season 3 will have 11 episodes and the running time will be longer than we were used to on FOX. No season 3 trailer yet.
Currently in its 3rd season, Star Trek: Discovery. Discovery has already been renewed for a 4th season, which, I believe, will air late 2021. Have to say, 3rd season started off good but last few episodes have been way too slow moving! Hope this doesn’t continue for the rest of the season. Till now 2nd season is better for me as the 3rd.
Announced a few days ago that the 1st episode of the 3rd season of The Mandalorian will air before Christmas 2021! Is good to know, the 2nd season is currently streaming on Disney+. This is really a entertaining show. Click here to see the season 2 final trailer.
Hawkeye – Another spin-off from the Marvel films, looks to be released in 2021 also, no definite date yet of course. See trailer here.
Halo - Aliens threaten human existence in an epic 26th-century showdown. TV series based on the video game 'Halo'. No trailer available at this time. Black Mirror’s 6th series will likely also be released in 2021. See teaser here.
The 4th season of Westworld will also arrive in 2021, no definite date yet. In May 2020 season 3 ended, Westworld’s season 3 is already out on Blu-ray & UHD. Stranger Things will also finally return for its 4th season. Like with most of them, no definite date yet. But also very much looking forward to this. See season 4 concept trailer here.
Raised by Wolves, haven’t yet seen it myself but has already been renewed for a 2nd season. Not sure yet when this will arrive, but presumably late 2021, early 2022. No season 2 trailer yet obviously because the 1st season ended not so long ago. Here a trailer of season one. Motherland: Fort Salem has also been renewed for a 2nd season. Probably will air somewhere in 2021 or early 2022. Trailer season 1. War of the Worlds has also been renewed for a 2nd season. Check out season 1 trailer here. It will be a very busy 2021!
Before we are coming to the shows of which an estimate will be even more difficult I would to address here that in 2021 we hopefully will finally see the last 2 seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on Blu-ray in Europe! Season 6 has been released on Blu-ray in Japan but nowhere else. And the first 5 seasons already have been released on Blu-ray in the UK and Germany. So it would really suck if the last 2 seasons wouldn’t get a Blu-ray release!
Coming Back to the upcoming TV shows, I won’t bother you much with estimates about the next batch of shows, although for some of them there already are trailers available so it could be that some of these shows will be released in 2021 instead of 2022 or beyond.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a show I am really looking forward to! Mainly I think because I really liked Captain Pike in Discovery’s season 2. And it’s obvious I am not alone in this, hence the upcoming new show. I don’t know if I am alone in this but especially when we first met Captain Pike, he really made me think a lot of Commander Jeffrey Sinclair of Babylon 5! That same look, same calmness, the way he presents himself. I really thought the characters were similar. Strange New Worlds will probably arrive somewhere in the beginning of 2022. I really hope earlier but I don’t think that will happen.
Also slated for 2022, is Andor, a Star Wars story. A Prequel series to Star Wars' 'Rogue One', following the adventures of Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion. Click here to see the trailer.
Star Wars: Ahsoka – Announced last week, the Star Wars character of Ahsoka Tano is getting her own Disney+ spinoff, just weeks after making her applauded live-action debut on The Mandalorian. Ahsoka will star Rosario Dawson, who brought the previously animated character to life in the fifth episode of The Mandalorian‘s sophomore run. Star Wars: Lando - Is a limited series centered in the original Star Wars character of Lando Calrissian.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Limited Series) – Not much info yet, Stand-alone spinoff feature from the Star Wars franchise centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor is said to reprise his role. Also Hayden Christensen to Reprise Darth Vader Role Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic – Not much news at this point, Disney+ series set within the timeline of The Mandalorian.
Star Wars: The Acolyte - Star Wars series that take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. Star Wars: Underworld - Plot unknown. Reportedly a live-action series that takes place between the events of 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith' and 'Star Wars: A New Hope'.
Marvel’s Secret Invasion – Starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Looking forward to this one also. Marvel’s Armor Wars - Find out in this series what would happen if Tony Stark's tech fell into the wrong hands. Marvel’s Ironheart - The genius teenage-girl inventor Riri Williams creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man Marvel’s She Hulk – Played by Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) Jennifer Walters acquires Hulk-like qualities. Mark Ruffalo to Appear as Hulk.
Marvel’s Ms. Marvel - New Jersey raised Kamala Khan learns she has polymorphous powers. Marvel’s I Am Groot - A series of shorts featuring the seedling Groot along with several new and unusual characters. Marvel’s Moon Knight - Marc Spector is a former CIA agent whose life is saved by the Moon God Khonshu. Marvel’s What If? - Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.
Y: The Last Man - Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Y is the last surviving male human on the planet. Based on the comic series "Y: The Last Man." Alien TV Series – Rumored for quite some time, is set in the near future and on Earth. Battlestar Galactica (remake) – Remake of the Ronald D. Moore show. More info you can find here. I understood that Tricia Helfer isn’t happy with this upcoming reboot! I have a few left! Galaxy Quest, the Series has been announced a while back. Hopefully this will happen! Although it’s been some time now so I don’t hold my breath. Star Trek: Section 31 – Has been talked about for some time now, not sure if this will ever happen and to be honest, I wouldn’t mind if it does not happen. Let Section 31 remain in the dark.
Stargate - For a while now there is also talk about a new Stargate series! It’s about time! How is it possible we are still waiting for this? In an interview with Stargate writer producer Joseph Mallozzi explains that Brad Wright, co-creator of the television series Stargate SG-1, is trying to get this of the ground. When asked how close he is to get Stargate back as a TV series, he told he was at Chevron 5, so knowing the Stargate normally uses 7 Chevrons, this could mean it is actually going to happen in the next 2 years or so. Of course Covid19 is slowing things down.
Sanctuary – In an interview with Martin Wood, Stargate director, it was also said that there is talk of a Sanctuary reboot. Of course in the original Amanda Tapping played the lead role. Around 56 minutes into the interview this is addressed.
This is it, it’s a lot! I hope I am complete, about 40+ shows! I hope you find this interesting info, please let me now in the comments below if you do or not. It was a lot of work but I had fun doin' it.
