Definitely one of the best shows of the last decade, Travelers is an intelligent time travel show which you definitely should not watch when you are tired, you’ll have to be alert because so many things happen in each episode. Clues are dropped each episode, many references to a possible future the travelers are trying to avoid. Season two is at least as strong as season one, although there is one episode which is below average or just average but other than that, 11 strong episodes which will leave you want for more.

The creator is Brad Wright, many of you know him as the co-creator of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. Because of this, at least this is plausible, we see a lot of Stargate faces in front and behind the camera. As a SCI-FI fan, this is a MUST SEE tv series which luckily has a fairly satisfying ending because its cancellation was known very early.

Season Two opens with “Ava Machina”, Vincent Ingram (Traveler 001) (Enrico Colantoni), the first traveler ever, recounts his arrival in the 21st century to his therapist (Amanda Tapping). His arrival was the first test of projecting human consciousness through time. He was to confirm his arrival minutes before dying in the fall of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, a time and place selected to not affect the timeline.

The intended host leaves the room, 001's consciousness inhabits an unexpected body, and the computer he had set up to message the Director fails. While the plan was for 001 to stay and die, he flees, narrowly survives the plane's impact with the building, and goes into hiding. Ingram is the one who held 3 of our traveler heroes imprisoned and tortured them in episode 1x05 – Room 101. Meanwhile, MacLaren and his team are being interrogated by the FBI about the quantum frame and its purpose, while David deals with the mental aftermath of an attempt on his life. MacLaren wants the Quantum Frame to be destroyed but FBI declines this, there is a failsafe that if FBI turns it on, it will make sure that the ones knowing about the device, become a host to someone from the future. Mac’s team is being released; his friend Forbes now also is a traveler. Trevor is being operated; a traveler doctor treats him. It is said that he possibly will not ever walk again, Grace hears this and as a programmer, has a solution for this.

In “Protocol 4” MacLaren and his colleague investigates a mass arrival of Travelers via the quantum frame. 6 Travelers. Forbes has to learn everything again, including driving. MacLaren tries to get back together with Kat, but she doesn’t want that, she wants a divorce while she is pregnant. Philip meets another Traveler, Jenny, who says can help with his addiction. She gives him eyedrops but these eyedrops seem to be another form of addiction. David has severe issues with what happened to him, that he shot someone, Marcy thinks it is a form of PTSD and tries to treat him for it but she has her own issues, feelings of detachment and disassociation herself. Jeff and Carly aren’t allowed to see their son, so they make an agreement, to try and make it work so they can get their son back. Trevor and Grace bond while Trevor is recovering from his injuries. In the final moments there is another mass-arrival.

In “Jacob” 3 months have passed after the mass-arriving via the quantum frame, MacLaren and Kat are working through their issues during her first trimester. Marcy has moved out from David’s apartment; she no longer has the same feelings for him and goes to work in a local hospital. Philip has traded one addiction for another but is in denial about it. Trevor is concerned about the fact that they did not have a mission in quite a while. The discovery of a murdered Traveler team puts MacLaren on the trail of Vincent. The Director sends messengers to both Grant and Vincent and warn them both to stop attacking each other. David has reconnected with a former lover of his, but he clearly still is in love with Marcy. Carly and Jeff get their son back, first thing Jeff does is open up a bottle of wine, while he promised he wouldn’t drink anymore.

In “11:27” Team MacLaren gets two new missions: MacLaren, Carly and Marcy are ordered to assassinate Congressman Bishop to make him a martyr. Bishop does what is asked of him, but he does not agree with the order. Trevor and Philip must help a radical environmental activist plan a bomb at her research facility that is working on a genetically modified seed that has disastrous consequences for the future. However, because of the time she spends together with Trevor and Philip, she cannot go through with it, while she is supposed to die. The Director then intervenes, and Trevor takes over the assignment which would mean his death. Philip however does not see the point in Trevor dying and disarms the device remotely. Philips violates Protocol One, but the mission is later completed by an unknown person after Trevor publishes the activist's manifesto. MacLaren knows Kat likes living at his friend’s place, he sees an apartment for sale and wants to buy it. Kat’s pregnancy has some issues, big chance that she will miscarriage, however Marcy might be helpful with a future solution. Although she does make clear to MacLaren that he violated protocol 4 with this pregnancy. Marcy has meaningless sex with a co-worker. Note – Directed by Amanda Tapping.

In “Jenny” Kat learns that her baby is healthy, thanks to Marcy's earlier intervention. Carly connects with Marcy over their mutual feelings of longing and love for their loved ones. Philip receives an anti-viral formula via messenger and memorizes it. Jenny passes this formula to Derek for synthesis and distribution to Traveler teams and potential super-spreaders, as well as to people who would otherwise be super-spreaders of the virus, which historically killed 70,000 people. After Jenny uses Philip (and Derek), she breaks up with him, Philip’s act of writing down the formula makes him partly responsible for the consequences. Two weeks later, a more dangerous virus spreads globally, and Marcy and Derek scramble for a solution as the death toll rises. They discover that the Faction manipulated the formula during the Director's absence, which exacerbated the crisis. The Director has been offline, leaving the team in a bind. Note – Even though Grace (Jennifer Spence) provides comic relief, she can be quite annoying.

Episodes “U235” continues from previous episode. The Faction's plan to save the future by killing 2 billion people in the present (opposing the Director's plan to make multiple small changes) is well underway. Marcy and MacLaren are immune. Grace realizes that the only way to solve the problem is to fix the Director in the future by delivering uranium-235 to its future location, so it can send help back to the 21st century. The original plan for this gets compromised and the team is forced to improvise an alternative temporary power source. They drop off the device, tricking the Faction members sent ahead of them. The Director is brought back online in the future, regains access to the reactor, overwrites much of the remaining Faction, and sends back a cure for the virus. Forbes is also one of the Faction but after the Director comes online, he is reloaded so to say, with a loyal traveler to the Director. Jenny is now also a productive member of the Director, giving out the anti-dote. Marcy asks David to stay inside because of this virus but he immediately thinks of his clients / patients and goes out to help them. Note - Although I love these two episodes, very suspenseful, rich in drama and all, it also is a bit uncomfortable to watch seeing what is taking place and usually I am not really fan of ‘virus’ episodes but this one is well executed.

“17 Minutes” MacLaren's team is given a mission to collect and safeguard a meteorite containing a key component of the Director, as it will likely be the Faction's next target. The mission goes smoothly until the team is ambushed and all are killed. And then it starts all over again and again... Note - for me, the only weak episode this season, possibly the entire series. Not a real fan of Groundhog Day episodes. There are some which positively surprise me like episodes of Dark Matter or Person of Interest, but this one was bland, annoyed me real fast. A few good moments, a funny one when the team is making fun of MacLaren who forgot his 10th anniversary with Kate. Another moment where MacLaren takes Marcy apart to ask her how she is been doing. He sees she’s not happy, different than before the reset and he gives her an insight on how she perhaps could do something about that. Directed Amanda Tapping.

In “Traveler 027” Three high-ranking Travelers are sent back by the Director to put Grace on trial for overwriting a person who was not assigned to be her host and for sabotaging the Grand Plan. MacLaren and the team must give testimony at the trial, which will determine if she should be overwritten or not. Meanwhile, the Faction is trying to replenish its numbers by overwriting people with the stored minds in the quantum frame. As Grace is being sentenced, she learns that the trial was staged by the Director to find out which of the three Judges was acting against the Grand Plan. This strategy succeeds and MacLaren's team secures the quantum frame. Philip is feeling useless because things are changing fast, and he don’t know what the new history is. Marcy visits David again, she wants to kiss and possibly more, just to test herself, David only wants it when she wants it, no testing. Note – I said it before, Grace is such a pain in the ass, but so much fun to watch! Directed by Amanda Tapping.

In “Update” Philip is ordered by the Director to attend an update with other Historians, where the altered timeline's history is imprinted onto their minds, but it comes with physical and emotional consequences. He sees things happening which causes him great sorrow. Trevor tries to help a former football teammate with past trauma. Like himself, his friend had been sexually assaulted by the head coach. He gives the coach the chance to come clean himself but when he refuses, Trevor orders Philip to release everything on him, his life is over. Hall returns from prison and has a new mission assigned to him from the Director. His task is to save Kat, because if she would go on with trying to bear the child, it would be stillborn, and she would have died. Philip has got info from the director about winning lottery numbers, David copies Marcy’s numbers and wins half of the money, 31K. Because he feels guilty, because he peaked at her numbers, he gives everything away to his clients, even his bike. Marcy will be him a new one which he is very happy about. Note – One of the best episodes this season!

In “21C” Marcy puts herself in a near-death state to recover her lost memories from when she was reset. The memories she receives include those of the original host Marcy, showing that the host's intellectual disability was caused by Vincent/001 testing Simon's incomplete consciousness-transfer technology on her. While she is out of commission, MacLaren and the rest of the team are ordered to provide Hall with backup in protecting the future 53rd President of the United States, who is currently a prepubescent girl. Note - McKenzie Porter does some terrific acting, especially when she plays the girl with the disability. She had me, getting emotional. Scenes with David are also so touching, are their more people in the real world like David? We need them! Best episode yet, well mixed the excitement of the stoyline with Maclaren and Hall and Marcy’s memory quest. Scenes between Hall and MacLaren were very interesting also. Definitely a 10/10!

In “Simon” The team track down Simon (Traveler 004), a specialist who developed the consciousness transfer technology in the future and was sent into a host body that developed schizophrenia after his arrival. Simon, who set up the Travelers' communications system in the 21st, is haunted by hallucinations of Vincent, who previously convinced an institutionalized Simon that the Director wanted him to build transfer technology in the 21st century. MacLaren and his team are closing in on Vincent, they use his psychiatrist Dr. Perrow (Amanda Tapping) but Vincent is on to them and uses her as leverage to get Maclaren alone. Note – Definitely MacLaren’s fault to use Dr. Perrow like this, promising she would be okay. Jeff comes home drunk and is all over Carly which she doesn’t want. It becomes a big fight which Carly wins. After Simon lives with the team for a while, he wants to go home but once MacLaren’s team drops him off, he is taken by two men. Kat and MacLaren are thinking about adopting a child. Note – I think in this episode MacLaren is to blame for what happens to Dr. Perrow as well as Simon. Yes, he wants to go home, but could you not foresee what happens after that?

The season finale “001” is almost the best of the season! Vincent demands that MacLaren's team leave him alone to finish his project. When the team refuses to comply, Vincent holds Kat, David, Jeff, Ray, and Grace hostage, and forces the team members to record videos revealing themselves as Travelers. The team must choose to either break protocol (and possibly be overwritten by the Director) or to try to save their loved ones. 001 transfers his consciousness into his therapist, Katrina Perrow, to escape the Director who later only overwrites Vincent's empty body. Kat, David, Jeff and Ray now know the truth about MacLaren, Marcy, Philip and Carly and they all are angry at them and 001 also called the police on them. Note – a fantastic episode where the team is exposed and not only them, every traveler in the world. 001 explains it so that director is the bad guy and that the Travelers are not here for the sake of humanity. Of course, we still don’t know if the faction is right about the Director.

Final Word:

Oh man, again this has become a long blog. I find it really hard to write compact blogs of shows I’ve only seen once or twice or even three times. Plus, that, I find it very difficult to write a blog for a show which has such a heavy overall story-arc. So many details, I find it very difficult to write. It is much easier for me to write about more familiar shows like Babylon 5, Star Trek, Stargate or for instance The Orville. Having said that, Travelers is a terrific show, the story-arc, strong characters, high stakes, exciting storytelling, it truly is a shame if ended after its 3rd season, real shame. But it is what it is, and we do have a fairly satisfying ending so that’s a plus for sure. One more season to go!
