Travelers, created by Brad Wright, yes the one from Stargate! It is about a group of people who travel from the future to the present to prevent a disastrous future. These “agents” from the future take over a body who is about to die. They become that person but of course that person from the future is behind the wheel from that moment on.
Eric McCormack as Grant MacLaren, who runs the team, MacKenzie Porter as Marcy Warton, Jared Abrahamson as Trevor Holden, Nesta Cooper as Carly Shannon and Reilly Dolman as Philip Pearson. Patrick Gilmore (SGU) as David Mailer, he does not belong the team who come from the future but he was the original Marcy Warton’s councilor as she was mentally disabled.
The fact that she was mentally disabled was unknown to the Director and others in the future due to fake social media profiles created as an exercise with her social worker David Mailer to help teach her about social media. The fake profile stated that she was a librarian and that David was a reporter doing research for a newspaper story.
PS. Travelers, season one, is also a show I’ve finished rewatching early this year, wrote notes until episode 5, after that I didn’t take any more notes so for the first season I will consult the wiki and the fandom wiki to complete this blog.
In the pilot we meet these four characters, Marcy, Philip, Trevor and Carly who are about to die and their bodies are prepared for takeover for a consciousness from people from the future where Earth all but destroyed and desolated and they come back in our time to try and prevent that from happening. An FBI agent is investigating these weird messages about a gathering of what seems to be a terrorist gathering. Marcy was, before she died, mentally handicapped and had a severe stutter, now that is gone, David, her counselor and her doctor are stumped and very concerned. This is not something that can be solved, let alone overnight by a bump in the head. When the FBI agent Grant McLaren goes to the meeting point, he finds these 4 people there, and they were expecting him, Trevor saves him from falling into an elevator shaft which would have happened had Trevor not there to help him, then he also gets taken over by a future consciousness, but with him, his predecessor did not die first!
In “Protocol” At first their first mission runs smoothly, they save 11000 people by stopping the military from testing this, but when the Traveler they are supposed to contact dies right after he took over his body, McLaren does not know what to do. Philip has an idea, to put the antimatter back where it came from, only this is a heavy guarded place. The device that was stolen from the military is a ticking timebomb and they quickly have to try and disarm it. Traveler McLaren meets his wife for the 1st time. David wants more info about Marcy and her partnership with the FBI. She can’t tell but he is persistent so she tells him something about what happened today, that you could only know this if you were responsible for it, or you are from the future. Philip is still dealing with his addiction he got from the previous “owner” of his body. In “Aleksander” Philip has a hard time with the lives the team is forbidden to save. He secretly tips off the FBI to prevent the killings. He leads the team to rescue abducted child Aleksander Andrieko before his murder, falsely claiming it as a mission from the Director. As a messenger, Aleksander exposes the ruse. MacLaren decides to abandon the "mission", but Philip refuses, drawing his weapon. While Alexander is saved, Philip is shot but survives it. Marcy tells the others about Philip’s addiction and plans to wean him. Jeff investigates the assault on Marcy, and detects the personality changes. David covers for her. The team adjusts to the 21st-century's contrast with the scarcity of their native era. Note - Trevor recognizes a name on the “death” list Philip has written on the garage doors First appearance Jennifer Spence (SGU) as Grace Day.
In “Hall” McClaren is instructed to help another team complete their mission. Leader of this team is Hall. He loses 3 men and has two left. He has seniority over McClaren and wants to take over his team and kill McClaren’s partner because he comes too close! It looks like McClaren lets Hall take over but he has another plan. Note - Guest star Louis Ferrera (SGU) as Hall, directed by Martin Wood. In “Room 101” McLaren’s team has crashed against another car, purposely by the other one. He imprisons them, have them locked in separate cages and in wheelchairs. One by one they are picked up and via an old tv questions appear on the screen which suggests that this person knows who they are. David has an appointment with Marcy, when she doesn’t show up he goes to McLaren for help. Carly kills the abductor by biting hard and long in his wrist, arterial bleeding, McLaren finds them all close to unconsciousness. Note – For me, one of the best episodes this season.
In “Helios 685” The Travelers transfer into a cult preparing for mass suicide. MacLaren's team, the cult, and many other travelers, including senior engineer Bloom, meet at the antimatter facility. Bloom reveals that the future has been subtly rewritten and is not as united as it once was. Dosed with antitoxin, they release a toxic cloud to force a local evacuation. Gleason interrogates Delaney until MacLaren returns her to the facility and explains the nature of travelers. Gleason discovers Delaney's escape and prepares to return to her lab. Using the antimatter to power an x-ray laser, the travelers intend to deflect asteroid Helios 685, saving millions of lives and preventing the environmental catastrophes and devastating wars that led to their dark future. Deflecting Helios has been the Director's main goal, even though it could possibly prevent the travelers' own births in the future. Gleason leads an assault, killing most of the cult travelers and Bloom before she can fire the laser. However, travelers transfer into his soldiers and eventually into him, sacrificing themselves to complete the mission. The traveler within Gleason fires the laser while MacLaren and his team save Delaney from the antimatter explosion on Bloom's orders. MacLaren is unsure of the mission's success, as his team remains in the present. Note – the summary for this episode I took over entirely from wiki because it was simply too hard for me to do it any different.
In “Protocol 5” the team suffers from paranoia and hallucinations of their future pre-Travel lives, side effects of the antitoxin. MacLaren’s colleagues throw him a party because he is at the FBI for 15 years. His wife Kat is there too and she confronts him about lying to Walt Forbes, his partner. She thinks he is cheating on her. He seduces her but she still has her suspicions. During sex, MacLaren hallucinates that Kat is a short haired women with the Carly’s number tattooed on her neck. Trevor is angry at his girlfriend and another friend for attempts to shoplift. When Trevor confronts them, a fight starts between him and the other friend, Trevor possibly experiences a slippage of time, where his friend is able to connect with a punch. This will later develop into Trevor's diagnosis of temporal aphasia. David reluctantly helps Marcy perform surgery on her own body to prevent seizures. Carly dismisses representative of Child Protective Services which will bite her in the ass later on. Trevor tries to control his host’s misbehavior and he and Rene (Alyssa Lynch) meditate. Ray (Ian Tracey) takes Philip to a twelve-step meeting for drug addicts and gets him a pet turtle to care for. Trevor and Philip learn the team has a new mission. Note - I really like the relationship which is growing between David and Marcy, the awkwardness from David’s side usually makes me smile.
In “Donner” A suicide bomber and his victims are set to become travelers, but the bomb explodes and only Donner, the bomber, survives. Devastated by his failure, Donner tries to betray the traveler program to the authorities, but the entire hearing is populated by travelers who hold a trial and convict Donner of treason. Donner is overwritten by a new traveler, who must serve Donner's prison sentence, and reports that things in the future are getting worse despite the changes enacted by Traveler teams in the 21st. Luca tells Donner in prison in so many words that he has lost faith in the Director. Ken, David's boss, believes David's relationship with Marcy is inappropriate. Upon meeting Marcy, he believes she has defrauded the system. Marcy saves David's job by repaying her benefits. Grace, Trevor's guidance counselor, and Jacqueline, Carly's social worker, genuinely care about them, respectively. Grace tries to help Trevor with his academics, and Jacqueline promises that she will not let the system fail Carly and her child. Philip discovers that gambling outcomes are deviating slightly from the historic record.
In “Bisshop” David asks Marcy to move out because he’s having feelings for her. He admits to her he cannot bear live without her. Marcy tells him she’s dying, then they kiss. Trevor tries to connect with his father, Jeff files assault charges, preventing Carly from finding a job. She asks him to take the baby for an afternoon, while she isn’t aware that he tipped off MacLaren’s wife about him and Carly. Under orders, a traveler murders her host's Cabinet-member husband, and instructs MacLaren to board a flight as Congressman Bishop's seatmate. In flight, MacLaren learns he is to activate a stasis field to save himself and Bishop, while all others aboard will die in a crash. MacLaren discovers Kat followed him on board, believing she would witness his infidelity. He instructs Kat and Bishop to use the stasis device, and attempts to survive impact unaided, using only Philip's knowledge of the crash. At the crash site, the team rescue Kat and Bisschop but MacLaren has already been taken away a traveler paramedics. Note – Definitely the best episode of the season for me.
In “Kathryn” Marcy erases Kat’s memory of the crash and the day before and stages her home that she had too much to drink but Kat immediately feels something is off. Philip removes MacLaren’s car from the airport but MacLaren’s partner Forbes think it’s theft. While Forbes and Kat are searching for MacLaren, Carly extracts Philip. An advanced traveler medical team treats MacLaren with nanites to repair his massive internal damage. Trevor undergoes a painful procedure to grow a transplant heart for MacLaren. While being in coma MacLaren has memories about his host’s life with Kat. They really loved each other and he discovers that she wanted kids but because of a life threatening miscarriage, he feared he would loose her. He also sees they began to grow apart because of his work commitments. MacLaren recovers in time to stage a cover story for Forbes, claiming that Philip is MacLaren's confidential informant and went rogue to prove that MacLaren's life is insecure. MacLaren returns home, and tries to apologize to Kat, but she avoids him.
In “Marcy” Carly loses custody of her son until the trial. Grace is due to die, so Trevor kidnaps her to save her life. She is overwritten despite having avoided the accident that would have killed her. Grace and another newly arrived traveler, Ellis, are computer programmers who have fled an anti-Director faction in the future. Ellis has developed a code that is sought by this faction, and has returned to the 21st century to keep it from them. David and Marcy consummate their relationship. However, her condition worsens and Boyd stabilizes her, but Marcy is near death. Grace, who was in charge of social media research and identifying hosts, regrets missing that the real Marcy had a brain issue. She wants to correct Marcy's condition by reloading Marcy's original transfer into the functional part of her brain, saving her at the cost of her 21st-century memories. MacLaren lets Marcy speak to David first. However, her condition becomes critical shortly before David returns home, and she is overwritten by her earlier self. Her team introduces her to David. Note – This episode also belongs to the best of the season.
In the season finale, Kathryn confronts MacLaren, believing he is having an affair, leading him to end his relationship with Carly. Charlotte, the misfire historian, is overwritten and murders her family. She attempts to assassinate Grace, but Trevor intervenes. Grace reveals that she used Marcy's reload to send a reset code into the Director, an advanced AI, so the anti-Director faction will no longer be able to send its own travelers. Jeff shoots Charlotte when she attempts to kill Carly. Boyd reveals she received a dubious order to kill MacLaren; Carly later reveals she was given the same mission. Ellis reveals he built a quantum frame in his barn, a receptacle to receive the Director's download to escape the faction. David is held at gunpoint by another assassin but is saved by Marcy. The team, having survived assassins at Philip's, arrives at the farm where Trevor has received a text to destroy the frame. Assassins surround the farm as Ellis shoots Trevor to protect the frame, but the shot hits Grace as well. Ellis shuts down the perimeter shield in the hope that the Director will help them, then channels a message (which kills him) to destroy the frame. Forbes and an FBI team, not assassins, burst into the barn. Note – Another near perfect episode.
Final Word:
I couldn’t have done it without the Wikipedia sites mentioned above, from episode 6 on wards, nearly a 100% comes from those sites, they get the credit for what I put down here. For season two and three I will make notes! Travelers is a special series, don’t know really how to explain it but from all the time travel shows that have been created, this one certainly is one of the very best. The first season does not have one bad or weak episode, they are all an 8/10 or higher. No filler episodes, just great SCI-FI, but also multilayered personal stories, not only the story itself is a big arc, but the characters also have their own story-arcs. It is really worth to watch this, I guarantee you, you won’t be disappointed.
