After 4 seasons of this brilliant TV show, NBC decided to cancel The Pretender. Series finale was a big cliff-hanger, so in that respect, it sucked even more! Luckily, cable network TNT wanted to finish the story in 3 TV movies. The first one was mainly to wrap of the 4th season and the 2nd, and the 3rd movie would have concluded the story of The Pretender altogether. The 1st movie, Pretender 2001, made it into the top ten primetime shows on cable for January 2001. The movie earned a 4.4 Nielsen rating, and 5.538 million viewers. The 2nd movie, The Island of the Haunted, aired on December 10th of that same year but unfortunately, I do not have the ratings for that movie. Most likely the ratings weren’t that good because TNT decided to not make the 3rd movie after all.

So again, The Pretender fans got slammed in the face, the 2nd movie ended on a cliff-hanger of course. For a long time, I held out hope that the creators were able to finish the storyline via a miniseries or movie or even a new series, but it never happened. The creators did write two Pretender books, but they did not get the chance to finish the story on TV, which is of course a f*cking shame. Thank you, NBC and TNT, for this.

On wiki you can find the creators wish to conclude the story, which unfortunately never became a reality: The creators of the show, Steven Mitchell and Craig van Sickle, stated that an ending was written for the series; they just needed financing to create it. In a September 2007 interview on the miniseries Tin Man, Mitchell and van Sickle noted that fans were still requesting an ending and that it would happen "soon" due to a relationship with Strange Highway Entertainment. They also noted that the storyline would continue digitally on the World Wide Web. On May 21, 2008, van Sickle again expressed interest in having a final episode or film to finish the series, and asked fans to continue to be patient until it happens. Of course, it is obvious that at this point the book is closed on this.

If you wonder what fans think of these movies, just check out Rotten Tomatoes and you will see that the fans really appreciated both Pretender 2001 and The Island of the Haunted. It is such a shame The Pretender ended just before the finish line. Still, it is a MUST SEE tv show, I guarantee you that you will love it!

2001:

The movie continues where the series finale left off, after the bombing in the metro station, all 3, Jarod, Miss Parker and Ethan survive. Miss Parker has a premonition; she sees her mother save her. After the explosion. She at first thinks her mother did come to save her but turns out, later she is saved by Ethan, who does hear voices, among them their mother, and she told him to save her daughter, his sister. We learn that Jarod did not escape on his own from The Centre 4 years ago, Alex and Eddie were two other Pretenders who went with him, but one of them seems to have died after a deep fall during their escape. Jarod pretends to be an agent of the National Security Agency; he is part of a task force assembled to find the "Chameleon", a killer who displays all the adaptive traits of a Pretender. This Chameleon turns out to be a Pretender! He was one of the Pretenders who escaped with Jarod, and he is full resentment. Against all odd (!), Raines is still alive, somehow Mr. Parker was a lousy shot. Mr. Lyle (James Denton) attempts to finish Raines off, but Miss Parker manages to take him away and hide him in her house. In return, Raines agrees to shed light on who might have kidnapped her father. Mr. Lyle has taken Raines’ thumb, and he wants it back.

Jarod receives taunting clues from the Chameleon, which makes him believe that the killer has some kind of a grudge against him, it seems almost personal. Meanwhile the Chameleon has kidnapped Miss Parker. While Jarod is searching for his family, this chameleon found his and killed them, he took the opposite way of Jarod. Turns out that while they were both at The Center, he changed Jarod’s simulations for the worst. From his perspective, this has 'freed' him from the Centre's control; however, he is still not satisfied and kidnaps Mr. Parker with the intent of killing him too. Sydney feels guilty because it was he who helped Catherine Parker with her inner sense but shortly after she was killed. Jarod saves Broots as he is snooping, he makes him out as a bit of a dirty nerd, so his colleagues realize that he is not a person of interest. At some point Jarod is a suspect too, because the chameleon is setting him up. But only when he saves the last victim from certain death, they believe him. In the final moments, Jarod prevents the chameleon’s next assassination and helps free Mr. Parker. Before he commits suicide, he gloats that the truth of Jarod's true identity will die with him. He also tells Miss Parker that Mr. Parker is not her father. When Jarod and Miss Parker talk to each other over the phone, they both receive an email with a photo with both Catherine Parker and Jarod’s mother on it! What they don’t know is that it is sent by Mr. Raines, apparently as a show of thanks for rescuing him.

The Island of the Haunted:

The movie starts inside The Centre where men of the Triumvirate think they have found the scrolls which quite possible has vital information on it, but the scrolls are not there. The Centre is tasked with finding it. Jarod (Michael T. Weiss) is working as a professor and is searching for a mysterious artifact. The photo Miss Parker and Jarod received in pervious film, of their mothers, reveals the artifact Jarod is searching for. Jarod's search leads him to a shopkeeper who shows Jarod a small hidden compartment below his store, where the picture of his mother and Mrs. Parker was apparently taken. The shopkeeper tells Jarod that his mother was just there 3 days earlier, took a box with a doll and went to the Isle of Carthis.

Jarod goes after her, but Miss Parker is on the same trail via Angelo. They both arrive there but almost immediately they island must be evacuated because of a major storm. Miss Parker even runs into Jarod’s mother, but she is so startled by it, before she can go after her she is knocked-out by someone. A hunt begins for a set of scrolls containing prophecies on the Isle of Carthis. Jarod and Ms. Parker form an uneasy alliance to learn the history behind The Centre. Miss Parker learns that her great grandfather murdered his family and then after that, he was integral in creating The Centre! The Centre's original founder. He called his daughter Angel or little Miss Parker! Miss Parker learns that Raines is actually her father and Mr. Parker is her uncle because he and Raines are brothers. In light of these discoveries, Ms. Parker's allegiance starts to waver. She turns Jarod and the scrolls over to the Centre authorities once they reach the mainland, but later confronts her "father", Jarod, Raines, and Lyle (James Denton) on board their plane.

When Jarod goads Mr. Parker into looking at the text of the scrolls, Parker is stunned by what he reads. He grabs the scrolls, then parachutes out of the plane, apparently to his death. Lyle, Raines and Mr. Parker wanted to stage a coup on the men of the triumvirate but because Miss Parker is also on the plane, this is no longer possible, so they kill everyone including the pilots. And because Mr. Parker disabled the other parachutes, only Jarod can land the plane, which is also his escape. Mr. Raines assumes control of The Centre, and the chase between Jarod and Ms. Parker resumes. In addition, Lyle begins working independently to capture Jarod, and Raines makes it clear that Ms. Parker will face severe consequences if she fails to bring Jarod in first. Miss Parker tells Jarod she expresses sympathy towards him, but she will keep chasing Jarod. The story ends with the coveted scrolls washing up on a deserted beach. Their text seems to prophesy both the formation of The Centre and the appearance of a Chosen One ... "a boy named Jarod."

Final Word:

This is it, another cliff-hanger which sucks of course. Still though, The Pretender will always be one of my all-time favorite shows, this will never change. And within a few years, four-five years or so, I will take the DVD’s again and going to start all over again. I can only recommend it, what more can I say!?
