I still am fairly new to Star Wars, I mean, I have watched many shows the last few years, watched all the movies a few times, but it only really started in 2015, with the final Harrison Ford as Han Solo movie “The Force Awakens”. So I can’t say my knowledge of the Star Wars universe is deeply rooted, still more superficial.

So while I read lots of complaints about the last TV shows since Disney bought the rights, I often find the shows entertaining but as I said, my knowledge of its history, the timeline of the Star Wars universe, is not that big. My favorite shows of the last few years are “Andor” and “The Mandalorian”. I wrote a first watch blog of “Andor” in 2022 of its 1st season and today I am writing a blog of my rewatch of “The Mandalorian’s  1st season. I finished watching it in January 2024 already and now 6 months later I felt the need to write it down.

For my 1st rewatch, I purchased the UK 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook of the 1st and 2nd season. So the sets contain 4K discs as well as Blu-ray discs. I did not expect a physical release after so many years but suddenly Disney announced these sets and not only "The Mandalorian", recently a.o. "Andor", "Loki" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi" have gotten physical releases.

The Mandalorian is a bounty hunter, he needs to pick up something which is alive and it is not necessary to deliver it alive. Apparently he is not the only one to sent on finding this package, a droid. However when the droid wants to kill the 50 year old Yoda infant, the Mandalorian kills the droid. The ship of the Mandalorian has been stripped by Jawas, with Kuiil (Nick Nolte), he goes to them to try and get his stuff back. He has to bring them an egg, an egg of a big scary creature. In battle with this creature, he is about to get killed by it when the baby Yoda uses his powers and makes the creature helpless which saves the Mandalorian so he can kill the creature and get the egg so that he can get his stuff back. For the Jawas, this egg is a delicacy they eat faster then the Mandalorian gets on his way. The Mandalorian delivers the youngster, gets al lot of payment for it but has its doubt about leaving it there. He does collect but he cannot leave, he goes back to save the Yoda infant. But the alarm goes off and led by Greef Karga (Carl Weathers, RIP), they try take the child from him, but he gets helped by his order.

Mandalorian knows of a planet where they can lay low for awhile, however upon arrival he meets an ex-shock Trooper Cara Dune (Gina Carano), they get in a fight before they make up, she makes clear she was there first. When he is planning to leave, a few of the locals who ask him to help out fight against a bunch of tugs who are killing and stealing. He and Dune decide to help out and win this battle. The Mandalorian is planning to leave baby Yoda behind but when it is clear baby Yoda is already found, he has no choice but to take him with. On a familiar desert planet, the Mandalorian helps a rookie bounty hunter who is in over his head. Man wants to joins the guild but his target is too good for him, he needs the Mandalorian’s help for this. When they do find her together, she (Ming-Na Wen) convinces the guy that the Mandalorian and Grogu are far more bounty-able than she is. He however shoots her and leaves her for death, he goes back to find Grogu and challenges the Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian is forced to be part of a crew of mercenaries springing a convict from a prison ship. He does this because he knows the one who gave the assignment but soon he realizes this may have been a wrong move. He knows some of the crew and they are to break out someone out of a prison ship. The other crew members want to leave Mando behind but they don’t know him as well as they think they do, he escapes, locks up the others and brings the prisoner to the one who gave him the assignment, but with a little something extra, a bomb. An old contact, Greef Karga, extends an invitation for the Mandalorian to make peace with his enemies. Mando decides to accept but he does bring some friends, Kuiil and Dune. But it’s a trap, Kargo wants to kill him and kill the kid but after the kid saves Karga, he has a change of heart. Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is the one Karga wants eliminated but he is prepared and he takes the kid and kills Kuiil.

The Mandalorian and his allies come to know their true enemy, who already knows much about them. IG-11, who was reprogrammed by Kuiil, saves the kid and tries to save Mando and the others. Mando gets injured and wants the others to leave but IG-11, can save him. They go underground to find the Mandalorians but most of them have been slaughtered by the empire. Only the Armorer is left.  She stays behind but tells Mando where to flee to and gives him a flying-pack. IG-11 sacrifices himself for the others and Moff Gideon is taken down by Mando but Gideon survives the crash. Mando and the kid are now like family, this is the way of the Mandalorians. Mando must find the kid’s people. Dune stays behind with Karga.

Final Word:

Even my wife liked “The Mandalorian”, of course, Grogu is one of the reasons why! Grogu is so touching, you have to be made of stone if you are not sympathetic towards the little scoundrel. I too think I would not like this show so much as I do now, if Grogu wasn’t part of the show. I also rewatched the 2nd season but I did not take notes after episode 3, so I am not sure if and when I am going the write a rewatch blog of my last rewatch. If not, I most likely will do it after my next rewatch of season two!
