Surface is an American SCI-FI TV show that premiered on the NBC on September 19th, 2005. The final episode aired on February 6th, 2006. Surface is created by Jonas and Josh Pate. On May 15th, 2006, NBC officially announced that Surface was cancelled. In total 15 episodes have been produced and aired.
Surface is in fact a TV shows about sea monsters, all around the world strange things happen in the world’s oceans. We mainly follow a teenager, Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins), from North Carolina, who finds himself face to face with the strange sea creature after falling off his wakeboard during a nighttime outing with his friends. California oceanographer, Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell), is attacked by an unknown life-form that appears out of a field of craters on the ocean's floor. Meanwhile, Richard Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson), a Louisiana man on a fishing trip, loses his brother in a suspicious diving accident when a creature drags him to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.
Surface came to our screens in the same fall as Threshold, Invasion and Supernatural! Two other SCI-FI shows and one Fantasy show. You know which show ran for 15 seasons, it was not one of SCI-FI shows. Threshold was cancelled after 9 episodes, Surface had 15 episodes under its belt and Invasion did get a full season order of 22 episodes but also got cancelled.
For me Surface was my least favorite, in part this was because it was for a large part focused on this 14-year-old kid, I really didn’t like that storyline much. But as the season progressed, the stories became better, the storylines around the 14-year-old kid became less annoying and the series actually started to get very interesting. And yes, of course, then it got cancelled, on a cliff-hanger if I remember correctly! (I’ve got to rewatch this again)
It always bugged me, while Supernatural was renewed for 14 seasons, granted, it had a great cast, good stories, good acting and such, but certainly Invasion and Threshold were really good shows, which deserved at least a few seasons. Perhaps even also Surface because towards the end its first and only season, it really got good. I wonder if how many of you still remember this show. I guess only SCI-FI fans still can remember this one.
DVD release / Critical Reception
Surface did get a DVD release quite fast, in August 2006, it got a region 1 release. In 2007, two regions 2 & 4 also got a DVD release. Back then, I purchased the region 1 set, still have it somewhere, as I said, I need to rewatch it again, as also the other two mentioned SCI-FI shows.
I did also check the Rotten Tomatoes website and I was very surprised by the results given there! From the critics Surface got a measly 21%. But the audience score is 80%! So, us ‘simple folk”, like you and me, actually respect and like this show while so-called critics really did not seem to like it. Figures!
Final Word:
Surface was only a blip on the radar, only 15 episodes, about 6 months on the telly! Still, it did get a DVD release all over the world, it (still) does get decent ratings from the audience of Rotten Tomatoes, so perhaps it has not been so easily forgotten. Anyway, I will always remember this show, it was not perfect, but it sure was entertaining, for the most part and as I said, it did get interesting and then it got canned. If you have the option, do another rewatch in honor it its 20th anniversary!
