Like with the 90’s Star Trek shows, the 3rd season, the show really takes off, more interesting stories, actors who get more comfortable with their roles, more at stake and so on. Of course, I am still watching the show on Blu-ray and yes, I am still impressed with it. By saying that I mean in comparison with the DVD sets. It is a big uptick from the DVD in terms of PQ. Unfortunately, it seems that the subtitles remain in capital letters which is really annoying, because the sub text already is so big and with capital letters, it really can distract you.

The 3rd season continues from season two cliff-hanger “Out of Mind” with episode “Into the Fire”. Jack is becoming a Goa’uld host against his will, however the Tok’ra operative (Samantha Ferris) is able to make sure the process isn’t completed. Hathor is the one behind all this, our team is able to escape with the help of Teal’c and Hammond who come from Chulak with an old fighter.

After that, for me, “Seth” was a bit of a letdown. In general, I don’t like cult episodes, but this episode just didn’t do it for me at all. “Fair Game” is an interesting episode where Thor contacts O’Neill with the suggestion of making earth a protected Asgard world because after what happened with Hathor, the Goa’uld are planning on attacking earth.

There is a catch however, earth must give-up their Stargates and aren’t allowed to develop any further! In “Legacy” Daniel unknowingly gets infected by a parasite which gives him visual and auditive delusions back on earth. Daniel even is placed into a padded psych ward cell when, during a visit from his colleagues, he hears Ma'chello's voice say the parasite has left to enter its real target, a Goa'uld: Teal'c, for whose symbiont it is lethal. Note - Michael Shanks really shows his acting skills in this episode.

“Learning Curve” in a strange society where the children before the age of 12 are the ones with the knowledge while the “adults” have barely any knowledge. It turns out that when a child turns 12, their knowledge is extracted and placed in a younger person and they ‘retire” with no goal, no future but having an empty mind. The SG1 team obviously doesn’t understand this, and Jack helps change this by showing one of them, Merrin, to have fun, eat ice cream and such. “Point Of View” is definitely one of the best episodes this season where Sam comes to our universe from an alternative universe with Kawalsky where the Goa’uld have attacked earth, taken it over. Our Sam comes with the idea to contact the Asgard in their universe, so they can help them as the Asgard did in our universe. “Deadman’s Switch” is kind of a fun episode where SG1 is captured by a bounty hunter (Sam J Jones). He is there for a Goa’uld he knows but figures that capturing SG1 will make him some extra money. The Goa’uld he’s chasing, is in fact a Tok’ra, SG1 tries to convince him to do the right thing.

Not a fan of “Demons”. Not to say it is a bad episode but that culturally 'medieval Catholic' community we get to see, is creepy, I get the shivers so to say! The Unas part was interesting though but all in all I found it be an annoying episode. “Rules of Engagement” is also not a favorite of mine where Jaffa pretend to be humans. Teal’c saying his underling about Jack, was fun! 😊 “Forever in a Day” is one of the best episodes of the season. Sha’re dies after Amunet is trying to kill Daniel where Teal’c kills her in order to save Daniel, which he is angry for at Teal’c. Daniel resigns, he feels that part of his life is done now but he keeps getting ‘messages’ from Sha’re that his work is not done, there is a child…who can be the key to the Goa’uld’s downfall. Note - Nice performance of Michael Shanks in this episode. “Past & Present” is a follow-up episode from season one’s “Prisoners” where a world is stricken by some kind of a virus which meant that people on this planet don’t know their name, their history and such. Soon SG1 finds out Lenea visited this planet, and it is not a stretch that she is behind this. A young scientist is a spokeswoman for this world and at some point, it becomes clear that she, Kira, is Linea.

“Jolinar’s Memories” is the first part of an exciting two-part story where Martouf comes to the SGC telling them that Jacob, Sam’s dad, has been captured by Sokar. SG1 and Martouf are going to try and free Jacob. Jolinar apparently been to this place and Martouf hopes Sam can remember how she had escaped there. Sam deduces from the images in her mind that Jolinar had a relationship with an ugly and nasty Goa’uld. But it turns out, only to help her escape. When SG1 retrieves Jacob, it looks like they can escape but at the last moment they are stopped by no one other than Apophis! In part two, “The Devil You Know” Apophis has revealed himself and wants to escape as a ruler, he wants to destroy Sokar. He used the device Sam had on her to relive the memories of Jolinar to gain knowledge about Earth and the Tok’ra. Meanwhile, Sam’s dad is getting weaker. Teal’c seeks assistance from the Tok’ra, but they have a different idea how to deal with the situation. Where Teal’c think of a rescue plan, the Tok’ra think of destroying the moon to make sure the Tok’ra secrets stay secret.

“Foothold” is a fun and exciting episode, Maybourne is also back which is always a treat in my opinion. The SGC is overtaken by aliens and only Sam and Teal’c cannot be converted! Sam escapes and contacts Maybourne but he breaches protocol when the alien Hammond calls him. He has Jack and Daniel with him, both impersonating. Some nice moments between Jack and Maybourne! “Pretense” is a sort of trial episode on the Tolen home world where Skaara / Klorell crashes and it is being decided who has the most right to keep occupying the Skaara body! Logical to me…. Meanwhile the Goa’uld are planning to attack Tolen, and we see a familiar face from the Nox! “Urgo” is not my favorite episode, still it is kind of fun because of Urgo. Dom DeLuise is Urgo, Me, me, me, me, me…. 😊. “Hundred Days” is a very good episode, also one of my favs of the 3rd season. Jack is stuck on a planet after the Stargate has been buried after a meteor shower. SG Command tries everything but comes up empty in trying to save Jack. He longs for home, but he also finds a woman he loves. But then, after 100 days, the walkie talkie activates, it’s Teal’c!

“Shades of Grey” is also a very interesting episode, interesting but also a bit uneasy to watch as Jack has been accused of stealing from the Tollen. Jack can choose between retirement or trial; he chooses the first. The rest of the SG-1 team is flabbergasted. Note - I really found it uncomfortable to watch Jack as he is acting in this episode, well done! “New Ground” is also an episode I am not fond of, mainly because of the aggressiveness of the local population. They annoy me really quick and for me it is then hard to enjoy the episode. “Maternal Instinct” is an episode I usually fall asleep with. It is so slow going. It is about the child of Apophis and Sha’re, Harcesis, who is hiding somewhere. Bra'tac knows that is a legendary planet the Goa'uld fear and loathe, which could very well be the place.

In “Crystal Skull” the SGC sends a MALP to a huge pyramid and inside they discover a crystal skull like the one Jackson's grandfather found many years before. SG-1 visits the planet and Daniel is looking into the eyes of the skull, as his grandfather did, an energy field envelops him. When Teal’c fires his zatgun at the skull, Daniel disappears. The team goes back without Daniel. When Teal’c returns for the Skull, an invisible Daniel joins Teal’c back home. While Daniel is invisible to everyone, his grandfather could see him the whole time. Turns out these aliens are giants, enemy of the Goa’uld. Nick, Daniel’s grandfather, will remain as intermediate. The season finale “Nemesis”, we meet a new adversary who also are a true plague for the Asgard. The Replicators are at war with the Asgard and Thor asks Jack, who is about to go on leave, if he and the SGC wants to help them defeat the Replicators. Note - Exciting episode, it really is. Although by now I do have to say that the Replicators were used too often, after a few episodes I was done with them but unfortunately the creators went on using them in Atlantis also. I loved the two-parter but for me, it could have stopped then and there.

Final Word:

Season 3 definitely is an uptick from season two, still it is not there yet in terms of TV you MUST see! That will come in the upcoming seasons. Season 4 is a great season, I always say, my favorite season but in later years it is competing with season 7. Plus, episodes 17-21 of season 4 aren’t that great either. Anyway, season 3 is done, solid season for sure, some weaker episodes, some episodes I just find annoying but all in all I would rate it 7.5/10.
