After such a successful season 4, how is Voyager ever going to top that?! Well to be honest, this doesn’t happen! Season 4 is the best you are going to get. Still, season 5 is also a very respectable season! Yes, it has its flaws here and there, but on the whole it is an entertaining season. It is however my opinion that season 4 is unbeatable.

We season starts off with the episode “Night” where the crew moral hits an all-time low because Voyager must spend two years crossing an expanse devoid of any star systems or signs of life. Even Captain Janeway is unable to gets the spirits uplifted among the crew, her moral is just as low or even lower and she also is feeling guilty because they are stranded here and she is responsible.  Note - As a viewer you really understand what the creators try to bring over through your TV screen, good episode! Paris’ Captain Proton is born here. Voyager’s “Drone” is in some ways similar to TNG’s “The Offspring”. In the science lab a new crew member has been created, a Borg drone! This Borg ultimately sacrifices himself for Seven and Voyager crew to remain free, because the drone knows the Borg will keep coming after them. In “Extreme Risk” B’Elanna is taking unnecessary risks on the hollow deck while Tom and the others are working on a new ship, the Delta flyer. When Chakotay told B’Elanna about the slaughtered Maquis, she felt lost, felt nothing, dead inside. Note - Decent episode where Roxann Dawson does a good job.

In “in the Flesh” Voyager has stumbled upon a Federation clone in space, a spaceship turned city. It turns out that Species 8472 is planning to infiltrate earth at the highest level, hence this facility where Species 8472 acts and look like humans. Chakotay pretends to be a member of Species 8472 as human. Note - Really like this episode, if only to see Boothby again and see Federation grounds. Well, the first stinker we have is “Once Upon a Time”. An episode of focused mainly on Naomi. I like the kid in the show, but I really didn’t like the episode. For me, “Timeless” is one of the best Voyager episodes. A time-travel story where Ensign Kim, Chakotay and the Doctor try to undo the destruction of Voyager and the death of every crew member except these 3. Note - Really exciting episode, for sure in the top 3 best episodes this season. Guest star Levar Burton! “Infinite Regress” is also a favorite of mine! Seven of nine is sick, overflooded with multiple personalities of victims by the hands of the Borg. Note - Jeri Ryan really steals the show in this episode, showing off her acting skills! In “Nothing Human” an injured cytoplasmic alien attaches itself to Torres, using her body to assist its injured body. Unsure how to save his patient, The Doctor calls up a holographic recreation of a Cardassian exobiologist to consult. B’Elanna doesn’t want to be treated with him because it becomes clear that he was guilty of war crimes for tortuous experiments resulting in thousands of Bajoran deaths, but she is overruled by Janeway! Note - A true Star Trek Story, it was okay.

In “Thirty Days” Tom Paris is stripped of his rank as Lt. and he has to do time, 30 days, before disobeying orders. During his stay in the brig, he is ‘writing’ his dad how it happened. Guest star: Willie Garcon as Riga. Okay episode. In “Counterpoint” Voyager passes through a sector of space controlled by a race that is deeply suspicious of telepathic lifeforms. By every check the crew must make sure Tuvok and others need to be concealed. Meanwhile the captain of that ship definitely has it in for our captain! Note - I like this episode, mainly because of the constant tension, will they or won’t they find them. “Latent Image” is great Doctor story, very well written, Robert Picardo as the Doctor is very convincing. Doctor learns that he has done a surgical procedure on Kim some 18 months ago. He doesn’t remember but this is because his memory engrams had been deleted. Because he could no longer bear the guilt that he saved Kim but let ensign Jetal die on the operating table at the same time, he had to choose. Janeway decides to let him keep the memory, which means the healing process will take time. Seven is the one who convinces Janeway to give it some more thought, to not start fresh with the Doctor, which meant who would be a blank slate.

“Bride of Chaotica” ….well it is okay to watch it but I do not really enjoy it…except for the scenes where Janeway is Queen Archnya. That is the best part of the episode for sure! “Gravity” is also not really my cup of tea. Tom and Tuvok crashland, they meet an alien woman who falls in love with Tuvok but he is unable to return these feelings. I did like “Bliss”, guest starring William Morgan Sheppard who is fighting his whole life against an organism living in space who can influence your mind. Like, for the Voyager crew, looking like a wormhole, all the way to earth! Entertaining Seven / Doctor story. The feature length movie “Dark Frontier” is an exciting story where the Borg returns and not only the Borg, but also the Borg Queen, played by Susanna Thompson. The Borg Queen tries to seduce Seven to come back and this works by blackmailing Seven that she will destroy Voyager if she doesn’t comply.

In “The Disease” Voyager crew is helping a Generation ship; Kim is in love with an alien woman from that ship. Kim gets reprimanded and is ordered to stop this relationship, but he is unable to. For the first time I think Janeway is very disappointed with Kim. An average episode. “Course: Oblivion” is a follow-up story from season 4 episode called “Demon” where the duplicated Voyager crew is on their way to earth. They’ve managed to upgrade their Warp engine and will be there in about 2 years! But the further away they are from their own planet the more they start to deteriorate. Apparently after they were duplicated, they forgot somehow that they were duplicated and resumed their way home to Earth. Note - I found it difficult to care about these duplicated characters. “The Fight” is one of the worst episodes of the whole series, perhaps of the all Star Trek shows! unseen aliens adjust his neural pathways, Chakotay recalls both boxing at the academy under groundskeeper Boothby's management and watching after his "crazy old" grandfather.

“Think Tank” is one of the better episodes this season where Voyager is attacked by a violent species. This Think Tank says they can help Voyager with their problem, but they want a very curious form of payment… Seven. Note - Nice moment between Seven and the captain where Seven is Janeway grateful she was able to choose for herself, but she choses to stay on Voyager. Ultimately the Think Tank hired this violent species! Guest star: Jason Alexander. In “Juggernaut” we see the return of the Malon, I don’t find them that interesting. The premise fits in our current timeline about pollution. B’Elanna is still struggling with her anger issues. All in all, a below average episode. Guest star: Ron Canada. In “Someone to Watch over Me” Seven is going on a first date, with the guidance of the Doctor who is falling in love with Seven while they are spending so much time together. Unfortunately for the Doc, it is not mutual. This was a nice episode; these two characters work so well together. In “11:59” A proud Janeway tells a story about her ancestor Shannon O’Donnell, who has been celebrated by the Janeway clan for generations as an astronaut and pivotal member of The Millenium Gate and several Mars projects that followed. Paris however, has proof that she didn’t. When Janeway is obviously disappointed, the crew points out that her inspiration made Janeway join Starfleet - and that is an accomplishment in itself. It was an okay episode.

“Relativity” is another fun and exciting episode. A time travel story where we meet Captain Braxton (Bruce McGill) again, from the season 3 episode Future’s End. Braxton wants his revenge on the Voyager crew because he blames them for his bad fortune. “Warhead” was another dud if you ask me. An alien weapon that possesses artificial intelligence links with the EMH program and begins to terrorize the crew. Note - When the Doctor becomes a mean character, it really annoys me, I won’t say it is really bad but mediocre at best. “Equinox” is the season finale, and this is a great story. Note - I would have loved it if this would not be over after the first season 6 episode, but unfortunately, it is, status quo, the reset button Star Trek is familiar for. Some great guest stars: Titus Welliver as Lt. Cmdr. Maxwell Burke and John Savage as Captain Rudy Ransom and also Rick Worthy as Crewman Noah Lessing. A great way to end the season, that’s for sure.

Final Word:

So, still a few stinkers, a number of mediocre episode but luckily it also has a number of really strong episodes. After writing this down, I now know 100% that season 4 the best Voyager season. Season 6 is only good till episode 12, plus a few episodes from episodes 11-26. Season 7 is also a very average season, not awful but certainly not as exciting as we would hope for a final season. I think I would rate season 5 a 7.5/10.
