It took two years after it was announced that Strange New Worlds became available to watch. It was mid 2020 or something and at that time you think: It will take forever! But those 2 years went by fast and in May 2022 it was there! Although I am a fan of story-arcs, I loved the first season which was mostly episodic. When Captain Pike was the captain of the Discovery in season two of Star Trek: Discovery, in my opinion, he was the reason the second season was Discovery’s best season.

I have to admit I haven’t watched the 4th season and I am not sure I ever will but when they announced Strange New Worlds with captain Pike, I already knew I was going to love it.

When I first saw captain Pike on Discovery, he so much made me think of commander Jeffrey Sinclair of Babylon 5. His demeanor, his calmness, the way he handled a crisis, he so much reminded me of commander Sinclair. I even thought, they looked a bit the same. Most likely when you place a photo of them side by side, the likeness is hard to find but from memory he also physically reminded me of Sinclair.

So, when the Blu-ray release of season one was announced in the US, I immediately pre-ordered a copy, which would make about $53 lighter, including shipment and customs. But later it was also announced in the UK and it was about $20 less expensive, so I decided to cancel my US pre-order and go for the UK release. Star Trek releases usually are region free, not matter where you buy it.

It is a standard release, of course it is also available as a steel book, but that doesn’t interest me all that much, and later in, in May 2023, it will also be released on 4K, no extra Blu-rays with this release, just the 4K discs. Anyway this release is a 3-disc set, no art on the discs itself but there is art on the inside of the cover. It is region free, English (SDH) & French subtitles and it does come with a slipcover. I like these kind of releases, not too big, because I just don’t have that much shelf space anymore, so I am all for the standard releases and I don’t mind a slipcover also.

Final Word:

I have to say I really loved the first season, great stories, interesting characters, although, if I remember correctly, I thought Number One, was a bit underused, hope this will change in season two. I am also excited about the featurettes, 3 in total (17:26min, 11:56min & 53:58min) and I noticed that on the US release there also is a Star Trek TOS episode on it as special feature: “Balance of Terror”, because it ties into Strange New Worlds episode “A Quality of Mercy”. I checked the UK release and can confirm that the TOS episode is on there also. Hope you enjoyed this unboxing blog. Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
