Quinn: What if you could travel to parallel worlds. The same year, the same earth, only different dimensions. A world where the Russians rule America. Or where your dream of being a superstar came true, or where San Francisco was a maximum security prison. My friends and I found a gateway, now the problem is finding a way back home.
Finished my season two rewatch in 16 days. From now on, it will take much longer because the last three seasons are full seasons: 25, 22, 18 episodes. The second season starts of with a new introduction by the character Quinn Mallory, a new clip show accompanied by the intro-song.
After watching season two, I am a bit puzzled regarding the quality of the show, because, to be fair, I only graded two episodes an 8/10. Most of them are around a 7/10, but also 3 below that and one of these I graded a 4/10, the season finale even, at least, according to my German SD on Blu-ray set. On IMDb there is a different order of the episodes. So, to be honest, I wasn’t overly enjoyed with the second season, as I said. The only episode I got excited about was “Invasion”, where we meet the Kromaggs for the first time. These Kromaggs aren’t aliens but an early species on earth, who evolved after they most likely killed off the first humans on Earth. I know these Kromaggs will return in following-up seasons but they where there only once in season two. I was hoping they would be back in the season two finale, but that didn’t happen.
I also hate it when a season finale is lackluster, as was this one, “The Young and the Relentless”. This was my least favorite episode, these annoying brats playing adults, it’s so irritating to watch. Arturo and Rembrandt’s storyline was a bit more watchable.
The best episode this season: “Post Traumatic Slide Syndrome”. In a world that greatly resembles the Sliders' place of origin, everyone must decide whether to stay or leave the doubles of their loved ones in order to find their way home. Professor Arturo's double steals the timer and claims the invention of Sliding as his own. A physical struggle ensues among the two professors. Even though, to them it seems this is the first time they might have been back home, their first clue was the front gate that was still screaking. But we viewers know that in the season two opener, it was very likely that they actually got home, but they had less than a minute to slide again. Quinn tests the front gate but it doesn't squeak. He figures this isn’t home, but as they just slid to another world, we learn that this world may well be their home, for the Gardner oiled the gate!
Another enjoyable episode to me is “Gillian of the Spirits”, where, in a world where technology has been banned after the event at Hiroshima, the Sliders must find a way to fix the timer that was damaged by lightning. Quinn doesn't fully materialize and must accompany his friends in a ghost-like state in the astral plane as they run into the Bureau of Anti Technology whose real motive is to build up their technological cache. This one appealed to me more than most of the episodes till now, probably because of the personal drama, of these 3 characters thinking they lost Quinn.
I just expected a more exciting season to be honest, but there were a number of really silly stories, I got annoyed more than once with Wade Wells, her whining on more than one occasion. I know it was still the 1990’s, but the CGI was also not very believable. Beforehand, I seemed to remember season two was the best, but after having watched the first two seasons, I have some serious trepidations about the last three seasons! At this point, the characters are the real reason to keep watching. This is fairly normal, but for me, the stories are often simply not interesting enough. I catch myself doing other things while watching Sliders. Funny thing is, I remember the character Rembrandt was my least favorite character when I originally watched it. But now, to me, he is my second favorite, after Maximillian Arturo who is my favorite character. These two characters I enjoy the most, perhaps because they are now closer to my age than 30 years ago. Normally, I like Wade too, but as said, sometimes I really got annoyed by her. And Quinn becomes a bit like James T. Kirk when it concerns women. And his need to always help, even when the timing sucks, it’s kind of annoying also. But most of the time I like all four characters.
Final Word:
So, till now, I am underwhelmed a bit after watching the first two seasons. I expected more excitement, more interesting stories. Perhaps with Sliders, for me at least, it didn’t stand the test of time as you get older, but I will continue to watch seasons three and four … and probably season five also. I know the storyline about the Kromaggs I do find interesting, so I know I will probably enjoy that for the most part and Kari Wuhrer’s character, Maggie Beckett, will also add something extra to the show.
I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
