I was looking forward with anticipation to this series because of Vince Gilligan’s previous work, Better Call Saul and Breaking bad. I also really liked Rhea Seehorn in Better Call Saul,  so to me it had at least some of the ingredients which made me curious about this new series.

Characters:

Well, till now, only 3 characters are regulars: Carol Sturka, the woman who is one of the 13 people whom haven’t changed. Zosia (Karolina Wydra) is one of the hive people, the intermediary between Carol and the Hive. And Manousos (Carlos-Manuel Vesga), he also is one of the 13 people who stayed the same. Where Carol goes into conversation with the Hive, mainly via Zosia, Manousos refuses any contact with these transformed people. Only when he learns about Carol and the 12 others, he interacts with them, but only if there is no other way.

It is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) is a novelist, one that does not really appreciates its readers, she is a bit gruffy, married to Helen (Miriam Shor) and is also her publicist. They’re travelling from bookstore to bookstore to sell their books. But at some point, An alien signal, deciphered from space, transforms humanity into a single, peaceful, and happy entity, free from conflict and negativity.

Carol however, is not transformed as all the others, she stays who she was before and her wife dies during the transformation, she falls on her head hard and dies. 800+ million people die during the transformation, for some reason they can’t handle it and only 13 people, including Carol, remain the same, having not been affected by this alien signal.

Carol is desperate, she wants to reverse what happened to all those people and these Hive people cannot lie, cannot hurt anyone or anything, cannot steal. They tell her in so many words that there is a way, but they don’t tell her what that is. Carol also finds out that these Hive people, because they cannot even pluck an apple from a tree, force themselves to eat human remains! They eat the remains of people who have died.

When Manousos finds out about Carol and the other 12, he starts his journey from Paraguay to Albuquerque, to help Carol reverse this process. The Hive knows what she is planning but they remain helpful with whatever. She even gets an atomic bomb on request! The Hive leaves Carol for a while because they need a break from her! Although they still help her with everything. At one point, the loneliness becomes unbearable for her and she begs them to come back. This happens, Zosia is again the intermediary and a friendship and more evolves. Suddenly Carol is not in a hurry to reverse the process and tells that to Manousos. But when she learns that the Hive is really busy trying to solve the problem of why these 13 people didn’t transform, she leaves Zosia and tells Manousos he wins, she will help him after all!

My thoughts about Pluribus:

As I said, I was curious and so I went in with an open mind, there definitely are things I really like but there are also episodes where I think after finishing an episode: what have I been watching. There are a few episodes where nothing really happens. Yes, it is creepy, I mean, all these people who want to help her, who are overly friendly, want to help with whatever they can. Because they are not allowed to kill, no not even plants, they are forced to eat our remains, so yes, it does have a creep factor, good acting too. Up until episode six it was interesting, exciting even, perhaps not what you saw in the episodes but mainly when you think about the overall story-arc. But the last 3 episodes were a bit of a letdown to me, Carol is lonely, wants them to come back, this happens in the form of Zosia and they become intimate, go away together and so in. It seems to be purposely done by Hive, because they want Carol to be occupied, so she has less time trying to reverse things.

At some level you also get the feeling that Carol is ‘using’ Zosia not only for the company and the intimacy, but on the other hand when Manousos wants to help her against the Hive, she has doubts about it. Only after she gets confirmation from Zosia that they can get access to their (the 13 people who did not transform) stem cells another way, and are willing to try that, she agrees with Manousos to fight them. Manousos actually has a possible solution. But these last 2 episodes, they turn into a love story between Carol and Zosia, while episode 7 was basically nothing, at least not much happens, we see Carol trying things just to see how far she can go. Only really interesting thing was Manousos’ trek to Carol. So, I really like some of it, but some things bug me, especially in the later episodes. And I wonder, in episode 8, Carol is writing a new book and what we see happening in TV shows and movies, she also does in her book, changing the lead character’s gender to a female. I’m thinking, is this purposely done for some reason, or am I just seeing things that aren’t there?

Final Word:

So, Pluribus started out strong, the pilot is the best episodes for me. It had some strong episodes in its short run of 9 episodes, but it also has episodes that don’t go anywhere, and the last two episodes suddenly it becomes a love story between these two women. Will I watch season two, yes, I want to see where this goes, to see if my worries are founded on nothing more than a feeling, because of these strange times, your mind sometimes tends to assume things that aren’t there. We will see after season 2 if I am still eager for season 3 but for now Pluribus definitely has the benefit of the doubt.

I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
