Introduction:

It had been 20 years since I last saw Kyle XY’s first season! I watched it when it originally aired and a few months ago I got the urge to watch it again but I didn’t have it on physical media yet.

So, I went looking for it and it turned out that it still is available but the prices had gone up a bit and especially the 3rd season was a bit harder to find as a NEW copy. Still, I was able to purchase all 3 seasons for fair prices.

Kyle XY is a teenage drama, created by Eric Bress & J. Mackye Gruber, with lots of SCI-FI elements sprinkled throughout the series. Its initial premise is comparable with John Doe’s premise. Like Doe, Kyle is also found in nature, having no memory about his past.

The comparison goes on a little further even because like Doe, Kyle is also super smart and in both cases a shady cooperation is after them. But after that, both shows go in a different direction, as I said, Kyle XY is more of a teen drama, while John Doe, who also is older, goes to help the police with solving murders while trying to find out about his past.

Lead Characters:

Kyle XY (Matt Dallas) is found in the woods, no memory about where he comes from, no memory about his past and no bellybutton! The Trager family takes him in since he has no where to go and Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre), the mother, who is a psychotherapist convinces the family to adopt (not literally) him. Stephan Trager (Bruce Thomas) is the father, at first he’s a bit skeptical to take in Kyle, but he decides to support his wife in this. Lori Trager (April Matson), a teenage daughter with her own teenage problems, involving a boy of course: Declan McDonough (Chris Olivero), who becomes Kyle’s best friend. Josh Trager (Jean-Luc Bilodeau), the youngest one in the family, he is convinced that Kyle is an alien. He even keeps a list of things that happen with Kyle which confirms his belief that Kyle is not from this world. Tom Foss (Nicholas Lea), he has an interest in Kyle, follows him everywhere, even bugs the Trager’s house to keep an eye on Kyle. For a long time he seems to be the antagonist but in the final episodes it turns out he only wants to protect Kyle from the company Foss used to work for. When this company learns that Kyle still lives, they come after him and it is clear that Kyle has to be killed, to prevent the public from finding out about the company. Amanda Bloom (Kirsten Zien) is a neighboring daughter of the Trager family, Kyle is immediately smitten with her but it turns out she already has a boyfriend Charlie (Cory Monteith), who is also having a relationship with Lori’s best friend Hillary Shepard (Chelan Simmons). A sexual relationship because Amanda wants to wait for that but he can’t.

As you probably may know, I am not loving this show for the teen drama, but for the SCI-FI part of the story. The story around Kyle, his past, the company that is after him. But I also have to admit, I love the Trager family, all of them.

Season One:

To me, there isn’t a bad episode among them, I enjoyed it from the first episode again, even though it is mostly about teens, I still like it. The first five episodes or something it is mainly about Kyle fitting in with this family, we see Kyle wonder about things which are so normal to us, he regularly saw to it that I found myself with a lump in my throat because he was so innocent, he did not understand much of the world he was now thrown into. So, the first couple of episodes we get to meet the Trager family, how they try to fit Kyle into the own lives. We also see hints about what is coming, about Tom Foss, about the company he used to work for but that is mainly on the backburner. To me, these first episodes are a bit of feelgood episodes to me, after that, the mythology around Kyle starts to heat up, the stories get stronger, still teen drama, although less, and more stories related to Kyle’s past, about Tom Foss and the company. As said, in the beginning it feels like Foss is the antagonist, but he actually tries to protect Kyle and the Trager family. Foss advises him to leave the Trager family because they will also be in danger as long as Kyle lives there. Then he gets a way out, suddenly his mom and dad show up, and even so suddenly Kyle remembers them. But it is all a ploy to protect the Tragers. This ploy has been set-up by Adam Baylin (J. Eddie Peck), who, when he was about Kyle’s age, looked very much like him, this is because Baylin is instrumental in Kyle’s existence! In the final moments of season one we see that the company is breeding another Kyle, a female Kyle!

Physical Media:

I mentioned it before already, Kyle XY has been completely released in North America on DVD, all three seasons. If you are thinking about purchasing it on DVD, I would suggest to not wait too long because they are becoming harder to come by, at least if you want a NEW copy. Also in Germany and France Kyle XY has been released, although in Germany not completely! Season 3 hasn’t been released there and season two only the first 13 episodes have been released on DVD. Most likely, it would have been released in two parts, but the part two of season two never came. What is interesting is that on season 3 DVD set, you’ll find a special feature where it has been explained how the show would have progressed had it not been cancelled!

Final Word:

As I said, I really enjoyed it again, much more even then I beforehand anticipated. The theme this season is family. In episode 9 “Overheard” there is a heartfelt moment when Kyle tells Nicole that she did save him, that she did help him, that she and the family where there for him when he needed someone. He felt safe, the Trager family became his family. I can only recommend it, even though season 3 ends with a major cliff-hanger, but it is good TV, it is enjoyable and Matt Dallas portrays his character in such an innocent way, it is so well done. Looking forward to a very BIG season two, 23 episodes.
