This year it is Jeremiah's 20th Anniversary, instead of writing a new blog, I thought to use this blog for it because everything I can say about this show is being said here! If you have a chance, find it somewhere, just take a chance, it really is a good show with a great cast. I believe at the moment it is available on Amazon Prime (US).
There are TV shows which made quite a impression on me, like Jeremiah did, but for some reason, this TV show seems to be forgotten by everyone. If there is one TV Series which falls under this category it is definitely Jeremiah. Created by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski in 2002. Due to differences between J. Michael Straczynski and MGM is was decided early in Season Two that there would not be a season Three. Because it was decided so early in the season, the TV series gets a fairly satisfying ending. So you won't get stuck with an unsatisfying ending.
Jeremiah is an apocalyptic TV Series, the setting is 2021, 15 years after a plague has killed nearly everyone over the age of puberty (both the event and the virus itself are referred to as "The Big Death" and "The Big D"). The children who survived are now grown-up and find themselves faced with two choices: either continue to scavenge off the diminishing remains of the old world, or begin trying to rebuild.
With which TV Series can you compare Jeremiah, well it is in the same vein as Revolution, Jericho, people trying to survive, there is virtually no electric power, people attack each other for a piece of bread, the lead characters, Jeremiah (Luke Perry, who unfortunately died way too young in 2019 at the age of only 52) and Kurdy (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) meet each other under such circumstances and they decide after some fighting to stay together. Jeremiah is in search for Valhalla Sector (a possible refuge) and Kurdy, although not really believing this exists, tags along. In season two Sean Astin is added to the cast as Mr. Smith and has the voice of god in his head, which of course no one believes.
An impressive cast, the earlier mentioned Luke Perry and Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Sean Astin, but also Peter Stebbings (Stargate SG1 & The Listener), Ingrid Kavelaars (Stargate SG1), Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13 & The Dresden Files), Robert Wisden (The X-Files), Byron Lawson and John Pyper-Ferguson (The Last Ship, Alphas) who plays the villain in season two and who does is perfectly.
Jeremiah unfortunately lasted only two seasons, 35 episodes in total but as I said earlier, it really made an impression on me. I doubt it's even anywhere on TV or on any streaming service at the moment and unfortunately the series has only been released in North America on DVD and recently it has also been released as a complete series in Australia on DVD. In the US the second season has been released as "DVD on Demand" from MGM. It's not a standard DVD release, no extra's, not cover art, only the 15 episodes burned on DVD-R's and because of that, season 2 is region free!
But make no mistake, the picture quality is terrific, I do own this season two release and it looks great, I have no regrets with this purchase. But if I had to choose now, I would pick the complete series which has been released in Australia but unfortunately is not available at the moment on Amazon.com. If you ever get the chance to watch this, please do, because it's better than Jericho, it's better than Revolution. Jeremiah's season two is simply outstanding.
The Intro song is also so amazing, goosebumps all the way! You can listen/watch it here. And here a longer (single) version. When you click on the cover art below it will bring you to amazon.com. The Australian set is pricy but still a bargain in regard to the US sets.
