Humans is a British SCI-FI series which debuted on June 15th, 2015, on Channel 4 and AMC. It ran for 3 series after it was cancelled due to low ratings. It was based on the Swedish SCI-FI series Real Humans. The British show was written by Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent.
The series explores the themes of artificial intelligence, robotics, and their effects on the future of humanity, focusing on the social, cultural, and psychological impact of the invention and marketing of anthropomorphic robots called "synths". The series is produced jointly by Channel 4 and Kudos in the United Kingdom, and AMC in the United States (wiki).
As said, Humans ran for 3 series, each series containing 8 episodes. The last episode aired July 2018, but almost a year later Humans was officially cancelled by Channel 4, which was a shame because I thought this was an intelligent, thought-provoking TV series which had a lot more stories to tell which unfortunately didn’t happen. It had a very large cast, for instance William Hurt (first series) and Carrie-Anne Moss (second series) where some of the more bigger names, for more info on that, see my complete series BLOG from 2023.
And yes, sometimes it was very uncomfortable to watch when you see what people are capable of, what they can do when they are cornered. We got to see a nasty side of our humanity; Humans was also a mirror I think to the audience. It had great stories, story-arc episodes, no fillers or even weaker episodes.
Physical Media:
The complete series of Humans has been released in only a few countries on Blu-ray. In North America you can purchase the 3 individual series and the complete series. Region code A, no B & C playback. The North American release has English subs. In Germany Humans has also been released individually and as a complete series. The German set only seems to have German subtitles. Region B, no A & C playback. In Australia only the first two series have been released on Blu-ray.
Final Word:
To be honest, I found it hard to write a big 10th anniversary blog for this series, but I didn’t want the anniversary let it pass by unnoticed because it is a show I really enjoyed. I have the complete series on Blu-ray, the North American release and I am sure I will rewatch this every 5-6 years or so. I highly recommend Humans, even though it doesn’t have a satisfactory ending, but it is really good TV. Happy 10th Anniversary Humans!
