He tells Henry that he too was a kinder and gentler man when he was younger, but killing mortal men or women is not something he worries about in this day an age. Adam believes that the weapon that got him killed, which resulted in his Immortality, could also made him mortal again when killed with it again. But ultimately it is established that using a weapon that initially caused their death, does not permanently end their immortality, solidifying that the "curse" remains intact with no easy way out. It will not surprise you that the story-arc episodes were my favorite ones, but even the procedural episodes are mostly very entertaining, for the most part it is because this is a very strong cast.

Characters:

Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) is an Immortal, 200 years old, a medical examiner, becomes a police consultant because of his medical detective skills, his keen intellect and of course his many years of experience life. Besides being a medical examiner, he also dabbles in antiques. Together with his adopted son Abraham (Judd Hirsch), also called Abe, Henry runs an antique store, mainly run by his son Abe, who looks twice his age. Henry and Abigail (Mackenzie Mauzy), Henry’s former wife, adopted him at a young age. As a kid Abe lived in a concentration camp. For me, Henry and Abe’s relationship is the heart of the show, every scene between the two is a just a joy to watch. Henry is still mourning the disappearance of Abigail who suddenly walked out on them some 30 years before, she had great difficulty with her looking twice Henry’s assumed age. Henry and Abe have been looking for her ever since. Henry works together with the beautiful detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza). Together they solve cases, always using Henry’s way of seeing a crime scene, seeing the victim. From the start there is a thing between them, but only towards the end of the first season, Jo has grown romantic feelings for Henry.

Lucas Wahl (Joel David Moore) is Henry’s assistant. He is always seeking some sort approval from Henry, he is insecure, but tries to hide that, a bit of a loner, other then being with his colleagues, but not by choice. Socially he is a bit clumsy, a bit awkward. He is a big fan of Henry, trying to emulate him but also trying to impress him. He says the funniest and strangest things. On many occasions he makes Henry’s eyebrows rise when he says something that would seem as if Lucas knows Henry is….different. Mike Hanson (Donnie Keshawarz), a supporting character, a colleague of Jo, who also works with Jo and Henry with their cases. Lt. Joanna Reece (Lorraine Toussaint) is Jo and Mike Hanson’s boss. A strong female captain, with the necessary humor. Adam (Burn Gorman) is the antagonist, a 1000+ year Immortal, who, in WWII was experimented on for many years by Josef Mengele when he too resided in a concentration camp, when they found out he was an Immortal. He has been looking for other Immortals for many years when he found Henry. In the finale we learn that Adam and Abigail met 30 years earlier, when she was a nurse at a hospital. This was after she walked out on Henry and Abe. From her he learned that there was another Immortal, Henry. Abigail sacrificed herself so that Adam was unable to find Henry. 

Episodes:

I counted the grades I gave and I surprised myself a bit, shows how much I enjoyed Forever. 3x a 9/10, 13x an 8-8.5/10 and 6x a 7.5/10. In other words, not one weak episode! Yes, I know, to throw in a cliché: it is all in the eye of the beholder. As said earlier, the best episodes are the ones where Adam is involved in the story, the story-arc episodes. Not many shows I watch I grade 16 out of 22 episodes an 8 or higher. My 3 favorite episodes are: “Skinny Dipper”, where Adam comes after Henry, trying to frame him, posing as a psychiatrist. Only in the final moments does Henry see Adam and who he is. A brilliant episode where Henry is under a lot of pressure, almost escaping town because of Adam because of what he had done to Henry. “The Night In Question”, where we learn about Abigail’s disappearance and what happened to her, heartbreaking. We learn how Adam meets Abigail and Jo realizes that she has romantic feelings for Henry. The series finale is the last one “The Last Death of Henry Morgan” where everything comes together, Henry now lures Adam into a trap, Jo realizes something is off about Henry and wants the truth. As always, I’ve added a word document with comments and my grades for more information. Although the show ends abruptly, the series’ end is somewhat satisfying, it could have been worse. I desperately wanted to have many more seasons, to see how Jo was handling the truth about Henry but at least the last episode ends with Jo coming at Henry’s door and wants to know the truth upon Abe says, tell her! Henry lets her in and says: It’s a long story.

Final Word:

It had been 11 years since I last saw Forever, I wanted to start a rewatch for so long now, but I always passed on it for other rewatches but I’m so happy I’ve watched it again, I absolutely love it. Henry and Abe, that relationship is just so enjoyable to see. But also Henry’s interaction with Jo and Lucas, it has been a real treat rewatching this again. Again, this format is used many times before, a detective with a consultant, but this definitely is one of the best ones and the Immortal twist makes it just a bit more rewatchable, because it is not always a standard story told in a slightly different setting. The Immortal part means an interesting story-arc, but we also get to see flashbacks about Henry in the past, how he became an Immortal, how he learned his father was not so spotless as he thought. We see his life with Abigail, with Abe, we see how Abigail gets older and having a hard time with that. I can say only this: High recommended!
