Series 7, the final series of Matt Smith. I’ve said it before, Matt Smith probably is my favorite Doctor. Possibly that Christopher Eccleston had surpassed him if he had stayed on for a few series more. Series 7 also is the final series of both companions Amy Pond and Rory. Halfway series 7 they had their goodbye episode and I thought it was quite good. New Companion Clara Oswald was a fine replacement, I didn’t need to get used to her, she immediately felt to me as if she the Doctor’s companion for years! As you may know, series 7 is also the final series of my Doctor Who rewatch! I don’t feel the need to (re)watch what follows after.
Yes, I did like Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, but the stories, which were already slipping, quality wise, during the second part of series 7, only got worse from series 8 on. I stopped watching halfway through series 9 and decided then and there that series 7 would be my finale Doctor Who 2005 series.
Series 7 really starts of strong with “Asylum of the Daleks” where the Daleks lure the Doctor to the original Dalek home world. They also take Amy and Rory, who have just been divorced. The Daleks need them because they want to destroy their Dalek asylum, where Daleks reside who are battered and broken from wars and such, they live on a planet with a shield around, the doctor and his companions are transported down to lower the shield so that the asylum can be destroyed.
They get help from a young woman who is also stranded there after a crash. However, the girl is not what she thinks she is. Her final act is to make the Dalek forget about the Doctor! Amy pushed Rory out because she can’t have kids and he wants them. Note – The Doctor is called ‘the Predator’ by the Dalek. As you might know I am not a Dalek fan, but I did like this one, because it is so different from other Dalek stories. I also loved the ‘chin’ jokes, hilarious! The one about the Doctor’s chin and Rory’s nose was hysterical! Oswin Oswald (Jenna Coleman): "The Nose and the Chin... you two should fence!
“Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” is also a fun episode. The doctor gathers some of his old friends to help him investigate an unmanned spaceship on a crash course to earth that when it collides, will destroy earth, they soon discover the ship's precious and dangerous cargo- dinosaurs. Note - This is a fun adventure episode, Rory brings his dad, well it is the other way around actually, the Doctor brings him with, some fun banter about it too. Solomon (David Bradley) is a rather nasty creep who gets what he deserves. The 3rd episode “A Town Called of Mercy” The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg who goes by the name of The Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? This Cyborg is looking for the doctor but not our doctor apparently, this man he seeks, has created him but killed many before subjects, in pursuit of creating the ‘perfect’ Cyborg and these Cyborgs endured a lot of pain, tests, experiments and were used to kill millions. Note - Was a good episode, Matt Smith, as always, was in good form. Nice scene were Amy puts him straight about how he cannot become something he disproves of himself. Ben Browder (Farscape) as the town sheriff.
Next episode “The Power of Three” is also an entertaining episode, Earth is suddenly visited by millions of small black cubes of unknown origin. The Doctor joins Amy, Rory and Rory's father, Brian, to help discover what these cubes bring for humanity. Note - A invasion in slow-motion, of patience. Again, Matt Smith is brilliant in every scene he’s in with his chaotic behavior, his humor, his grinning face. Nice to see how much especially Amy and the Doctor feel for each other, knowing that the end of their adventures is coming to an end. Rory’s father advises them to go with him, go explore, go save.
One of my favorite episodes is “The Angels Take Manhattan” where we say goodbye to Amy and Rory. After Rory has an encounter with a weeping angel, he walks into a 1930’s film noir where River Song is a private detective, Melody Malone. The doctor and Amy travel to 1930's New York to save him, but they soon discover that the weeping angels have taken over Manhattan, and soon, maybe, the world. The only way to stop this is a paradox and not everyone will survive! Note – Really fantastic Doctor Who story, love the pocket book storyline, that they must not read further otherwise it cannot be changed. The finale moments, which indeed is a paradox, is an emotional ride for the doctor as well as the viewer. Perfect Doctor Who story. “The Snowmen” begins in London, 1892. Snow is evolving, turning into icy monstrosities, but this is no concern for the Doctor who has given up trying to save the universe, leaving it to a clever young governess named Clara to save the day. Note - It is actually a X-mas special which I really liked. The 2nd episode for Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara, although at first they both do not remember meeting each other earlier. Clara meets the Doctor and is immediately curious about him while he is still wallowing over the people he has lost over the years, especially of course the Pond(s). The word ‘Pond’, spoken by Clara to Madame Vastra is the very reason he starts to care again!
In “The Bells of Saint John” A chance phone call reunites the Doctor with Clara in the present day. A mysterious organization, lead by the evil Miss Kizlet, sends robots known as "Spoonheads" to steal the minds of people who use the company's WiFi. The Doctor and Clara must work together to find the location of the organization and destroy it before the whole world is trapped by the WiFi. Note - Never bores when someone, this time Clara, is amazed by the TRADIS being bigger on the inside, although Clara said it the other way around: Smaller on the outside. More or less the 3rd introduction of Clara, I really like her and I also like how the Doctor responds to her. Also love the scene where the Doctor takes off his monk’s outfit for a more suited outfit and he kept his bowtie in a box. In “The Rings of Akhatan”, The doctor takes Clara to the rings of Akhaten, A partly destroyed planet, where a religious ceremony is about to be carried out, but a darkness is stirring, a hungry darkness that could consume the rings of Akhaten and the universe. Note - Not my favorite story, still it is kinda fun to see the dynamic between the Doctor and Clara, really like it, so naturally after 2.5 years of Amy and the Doctor. Again, the Doctor is so funny, I have said it many times, his odd behavior, his chaotic manner makes him so fun to watch, especially with an episode which is perhaps a bit less interesting.
“Cold War” is one of the episodes this series. The Doctor and Clara find themselves on a Russian submarine that is falling to the bottom of the ocean because of an attack by a rogue Martian warrior called Skaldek, he was frozen in ice, taken aboard and one of the crew members got curious and tawed him. He was frozen for 5000 years, when his signal to his race gets no answer, he wants revenge. The Doctor tries everything in his power to change his mind. Note - This story I really liked, Doctor and Clara on a submarine, tight spaces all around, a creepy alien with a great voice. Not a difficult story but certainly entertaining. In “Hide” The Doctor and Clara arrive at a supposedly haunted mansion where they find a ghost hunter and a psychic woman, who are searching for a legendary ghost known as 'the witch of the well'. This appearance however is not a ghost, but a fellow time-traveler stuck in a pocket universe, chased by some kind of monster. The Doctor helps her escape but gets stuck there himself with that same monster. Clara saves the Doctor with the TARDIS. Real reason why the Doctor came her was to talk to the psychic to ask her about Clara, what kind of girl she is. According to her she is just a simple girl. Note - Perhaps not the very best episode but still very entertaining. The way Matt Smith portrays the Doctor makes almost every episode worth watching. Ultimately this was a love story, because the monster just wanted to reunite with its mate who was also in that castle. The psychic and the ghost hunter were in love with each other also.
“Journey if the Centre of the TARDIS”, Note - it was an episode I was kind of looking forward to, given the title, but I found it to be bit of a confusing episode, I was somewhat tired when I watched this episode but still, it was a bit of a strange episode overall. After the TARDIS is caught accidentally by an outer space trash collector, Clara is trapped deep inside of the TARDIS, where she finds herself on a journey through the doctor's past and her future. Doctor really doesn’t know how Clara is possible. He pressures the trash collector men help him find Clara. In “The Crimson Horror” When they find a picture of the Doctor in a recently dead man's eye, it's up to Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax to save The Doctor and find out what sinister secrets are going on at Sweetsville, Yorkshire. Note - Is an okay episode, not too fancy but still watchable, although it does take at least 15 minutes before the Doctor graces our screen with his presence and Clara even a bit longer. You gotto love the character Strax (Dan Starkey), he is unintentionally so much fun.
In “Nightmare in Silver” The Doctor takes Clara and the children she babysits to a rundown amusement park in space where Cybermen are hiding, and these Cybermen are ready to invade the most precious place in the universe, The Doctor's mind. Note - You probably know that like with the Dakeks, I am also not a fan of Cybermen stories, but this one is perhaps the worst episode of the Matt Smith’s era. Matt Smith really tried but I thought it was a mess of an episode and the girl Clara babysits, was so annoying, why is that always the case with young teenage girls or boys? Luckily, the series 7 finale “The Name of the Doctor” belongs to the best episodes: The Doctor's friends are being kidnapped, which leads him to the fields of Trenzalore, where his greatest secret will be revealed and Clara's mystery will be solved. This is where the Doctor’s grave lies. It is a place he will never go to, but he has to because the Whispermen, under command of Dr. Simeon, have kidnapped his friends. We also learn why Clara is the impossible girl, in order to save the Doctor, she has to follow Simeon into the Doctor’s energy ( aka his grave, sort of) Clara becomes the savior of the Doctor, of all Doctors, all 11. But then another Doctor appears….which she has never met, nor saved. Note - Great season finale, the last few episodes of series 7 were fairly average but thankfully the finale was a great one. Love the explanation about Clara being the impossible girl. Again, I so love Strax! Some moving scenes between Clara and the Doctor and River and the Doctor.
Final Word:
The first 7 episodes are all fairly strong, no real sign yet of a quality dip. For me this starts with episode 8 “The Rings of Akhaten”, although not bad, it was a bit mweh. From that episode till episode 14, I only counted two episodes which I graded higher than 8/10, the rest I thought was also kind of average. So yeah, I think the decline in storytelling starts here, not to say that earlier series did not have any weak episodes, that is certainly not the case. Still I think series 7 overall, is more than an average series, Matt Smith says goodbye to his version of the Doctor with dignity. Of course, we still still have two specials to see.
Final Two Matt Smith Specials:
The Day of the Doctor:
In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. 3 Doctor’s at work here today, apparently the very first, who is responsible for the destruction of Gallifrey, the 10th and 11th Doc. These 3 men, together with Clara and Rose and all the other doctors, change history as they know it, by not letting Gallifrey destroyed, but frozen in time, so there is always hope. Note - I thought it was okay, it was nice to see David Tennant and Rose back, but it was not a special I got very excited about. It never got really exciting, it just rippled at bit.
The Time of the Doctor:
Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars - and amongst them, the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe. Note - This was a brilliant finale, I thought it was much more entertaining than “The Day of the Doctor”. Although the initial setting of the episode made it look like a big episode were are used to from specials and season finales. But somehow the story remained manageable. Of course, in the end it got a bit emotional, saying goodbye to my favorite doctor (Matt Smith) and he also has become my last doctor, at least for the forceable future.
