I dare to say that season two is as exciting as the first season and perhaps even surpasses the first season. The stakes are higher, the lead characters get the chance to grow over the course of the first and especially second season, the overall story-arc gets more intriguing. I am really enjoying this rewatch of Defiance, more than I beforehand anticipated. That does not mean that I think it was a bad show before, it surprised me how much I enjoyed it again, it’s just a very entertaining sci-fi show and it is a hell of a shame that it got cancelled after the 3rd season, not because of bad ratings, because, as you may know, the ratings haven’t been beaten by any other regular Syfy TV series since Defiance originally aired. It was mainly cancelled because the show became too expensive to produce!
New main characters in season two:
A few new characters we got to know in season two. Mayor Niles Pottinger (James Murray). He became the new mayor after Datak Tarr killed colonel Marsh, as the Earth republic incorporates Defiance. Pottinger is totally smitten with Amanda, however, there is something more that we learn in season 3. I mostly know James Murray from the British sci-fi show “Primeval” where he played Stephen Hart in the first two seasons, or series.
Anna Hopkins plays Jessica ‘Berlin’ Rainer, she is an Earth republic soldier, having a relationship with Tommy. After Defiance Anna Hopkins joined “The Expanse” as Monica Stuart. Great actress and very beautiful! William Atherton plays Viceroy Berto Mercado, also from the Earth republic and he is more important than the mayor and he really dislikes the mayor. Mercado is a recurring character. Kristina Pesic is Deirde Lamb aka Treasure Doll, she works at the NeedWant, but she also helps Alak Tarr with his DJ hobby. She wants Christie out of the way so she can become Alak Tarr’s new woman.
Season Two Overview:
Irisa’s situation at the end of the first season, grows worse in season two, she is connected to a ship that rests underground, under the town Defiance, although Irisa thinks she is connected to Urza, an Irathian god. This Ark tech is using her with the goal to terraform the earth. Amanda is still thinking her sister Kenya has run away and will come back someday. At Kenya’s absence, Amanda takes over the NeedWant until Kenya supposedly returns. Datak Tarr has been imprisoned at the beginning of the second season after killing colonel Marsh from the Earth republic. Doc Jewll is also imprisoned because of her acts in the finale episodes of season one. Stahma has taken over the business from her husband, and she is doing really well. She is in no hurry for him to be released from prison.
Tommy starts out as the new law keeper but as soon as Nolan returns, Tommy has to step aside again, which he logically is not happy about. He never really liked Nolan because how he treated Tommy and because of his recklessness and such. Tommy was in love with Irisa but after she left, he and Berlin became an item. Rafe has lost his mines to the Earth republic, his daughter is in love with Alak Tarr, at some point, after he loses his house, he temporarily becomes a guest at the Tarr’s, Christie is pregnant from Alak but Alak is being seduced Treasure Doll.
Datak Tarr is lucky to get released because Pottinger needs Jewll out of prison for his own personal reasons, which involves Amanda and a clone of Kenya. Jewll gets Tarr also to be released and when he learns of what his wife has done, he almost kills her. Then he expects to be greeted back with open arms from his crew but he is sorely mistaken when his former crew takes side of his wife Stahma. Datak Tarr is banished from his own home. Amanda is so happy when she get her sister back, but is devasted when she learns it is a clone and she also learns who actually killed her sister. Pottinger thinks to surprise her and kidnaps the killer(s) of Kenya, for Amanda to kill. Meanwhile Quentin learns that his mother, Pilar (Linda Hamilton) still lives, he decides to visit her. Back in the day she was sick and this caused problems in the family, Rafe had her put in a asylum and told his children that she had died. Quentin comes back to Defiance with his cured mother. Quentin is so angry with his father, that he decides to set him up for murder, which Rafe accepts.
At one point Irisa has been taken over by the Ark tech completely, in the image of Urzu, the terraforming is beginning in New York, which kills many people. Irisa, who at that point is no longer herself, critically injures someone who means very much to her. Yewll is instrumental in stopping further terraforming, Nolan is able to save his daughter but they are underground when it all collapses, it is assumed that both Irisa and Nolan are killed. Pilar and Quentin kidnap Christie, Alak and their baby from Defiance.
Final Word:
Not one episode is boring, no, they are not all perfect but it is a hell of an entertaining second season, action packed, plenty of drama, a emotional rollercoaster ride for our characters and the audience of course. Strong characters performed by very capable actors. It is a real shame it did not get the chance to complete its story, one or two more seasons would have been perfect for that, mainly because season 4 was said to be set in space! But alas, it is Syfy, typical. One more season to go.

I've added the word document with the episode ratings with descriptions and comments for the ones who are interested in this. Just be aware, it is a draft document, sometimes also can be confusing because of grammar errors and some sloppiness.
