Last Rewatch: 27/06/2018 - 26/09/2018
Plot (IMDb): In the year 2046, it's a new Earth - with new rules. Over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As they settle into town - overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jack Mehoff) - events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for.
Defiance first premiered on the Syfy channel on April 15, 2013 and the last episode aired August 28, 2015. On October 16, 2015 Defiance was officially cancelled mainly due to financial reasons. Defiance was an expensive show to produce. It's of course a shame it got cancelled but it was extra painful because it looked like the fourth season, at least in part, was setting in space.
Defiance came to our TV screens when there wasn't much SCI-FI on TV, so I was welcoming this new show, eventhough it wasn't set in space..much. It was a bit like a town in an old western movie, a pub, a doctor's office, a sheriff's office and so on. The CGI is reasonably okay and the main characters are interesting. Some more than others but that's something that is true for every TV show. My favorite characters are Datak and Stahma Tar (Tony Curran & Jaime Murray) and Doc Yewll (Trenna Keating). All these characters weren't heroic characters but these characters have more grey areas and is often why they are more interesting. Same counts for instance with the character Garak on DS9.
On Rotten Tomatoes Defiance has a good track record. In January 2021 77% Postive Critic reviews and 85% audience. Season 2 has been rated as the best, 90% overall, which are good numbers all around. If memory serves, Defiance did do okay in the ratings while airing on Syfy. But the show was expensive to produce, it needed to be more than okay. I looked it up and till today it still has the best ratings since Defiance aired as a regular show! Only Childhood's End is before Defiance but that is a miniseries. It's really impressive that about 8 years later their ratings on Syfy still stand.
Of course all seasons of Defiance also have been released on Blu-ray in the UK, France, US, Germany, Canada and Spain. I myself purchased the French release, it has small standard case releases, which was not the case in the UK, and when you put it the disc you get the option to select the menu in English. it's how universal usually releases Blu-ray's and DVD's. This is what should on all releases if you ask me.
