Intro:
Dark Matter first aired on June 12th, 2015, on the Syfy channel, it was cancelled after 3 seasons of 13 episodes each. The creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie had planned a 5-season story-arc, unfortunately, despite having among the better ratings in that period of time, Syfy channel cancelled Dark Matter after 3 seasons and granted Killjoys, of which the ratings weren’t as good, two more seasons.
It would have been entirely possible to grant both shows one more season so that both shows could end satisfactory. But most likely it had to do with money of course, because Killjoys branded as a Syfy channel product and Dark Matter wasn’t.
Still, even though it only got 3 seasons, and it got cancelled on a cliff-hanger, Dark Matter still is one of my favorites shows of the last decade. I find it far more interesting than Killjoys, but that is of course a matter of taste.
Characters:
It had a very strong cast, the 5 cast members were very strong, most of them already were known actors. First (Jace Corso / Derrick Moss) was Marc Bendavid, was my least favorite character but certainly interesting and always trying to do the good thing. And he was in love with Two, who can blame him! Two (Portia Lin / Rebecca) is played by Melissa O’Neil, she became a big tv star in The Rookie which came very quick after Dark Matter’s cancellation. She definitely was one of my favorite characters. A strong female character, immediately taking the lead and we later learned that she was not just human!
Three (Marcus Boone / Titch) is another favorite of mine, played by Anthony Lemke. Three was obnoxious, egoistic, an asshole. But I believe that his character grew most of the course of the 3 seasons. Four (Ryo Tetsudo / Ishida Ryo) is played by Alex Mallari Jr., from the very first moment, you know he is going to be trouble in the long run seeing his history and his statements. Five (Emily Kolburn), played by Jodelle Ferland, is a stowaway, the youngest of them all but also street smart and has impressive tech qualities. Jodelle Ferland also had a guest part in Stargate SG-1 as the young Adria in season 10. Six (Griffin Jones / Lt. Kal Varrick) is the best know actor, Roger Cross, you must know him from “First Wave”, “Stargate SG-1”, “Continuum” and many, many…. many more roles. He takes in interest to Five, to protect her from the others. Then there is also the Android, another favorite character of mine, played by Zoie Palmer. Before Dark Matter she had a lead role in “Lost Girl”. The Data (TNG) so the say of Dark Matter.
In season two we get 2 new regular characters, Nyx Harper, played by Melanie Liburd. Nyx Harper is like Two, a very strong female character and she was a great addition to the crew, shame it only lasted a season though. Devon Taltherd, played by Shaun Sipos was also added to the crew. He had a medical background. But he only lasted 7 episodes.
General:
Dark Matter arrived in the same year as Killjoys and The Expanse, after 4 years of a drought in terms of SCI-FI in space. The Expanse is hands down my favorite of the three, but Dark Matter definitely is a close second and who knows, had it got five seasons, I would think differently about this. After the cancellation of Stargate Universe in 2011, it took 4 years when we finally got some new shows set in space. I have been a fan of Dark Matter from the 1st hour, although I must admit, for me, the first season is my least favorite season. It only got better and better, the characters got a chance to grow, it truly was an exciting show.
As you probably know, Dark Matter has lots and lots of Stargate influence, not only was it created by Stargate people, there also were several actors guest-starring (or recurring) which had a Stargate history, think of Torri Higginson; David Hewlett & Mike Dopud. And yes, it also had more then a few directors with a Stargate past: Martin Wood; Peter Deluise; Any Mikita and of course also Amanda Tapping! Not Stargate related (I think), is that Jason Priestley, mostly know from Beverly Hills 90210, also directed an episode of Dark Matter! (Also) not Stargate related but Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher in TNG) also guest-starred two times and he was phenomenally devious in that.
Blu-ray:
I also want to mention that Dark Matter has also been released in the best available quality, yes Blu-ray! In North America the 3 seasons have been released individually. Be aware, these are region A locked! You’ll need to region free or a region A player to be able play these discs. The show has also been released in Germany with English audio and subtitles. In Germany they have been released individually as well as a complete series. Region B. There is a difference though, the North American release consists of 3 disc a season while the German release consists of only 2 discs a season, just so you know.
Closure:
Joseph Mallozzi has expressed the wish several times to give the show closure, he has tried or at least had the intention to create a miniseries or a TV movie to close the show, but so far it hasn’t happened yet, and you know as well as I do, the longer it takes the less likely it will happen.
Final Word:
It has already been 10 years since Dark Matter first aired, I really miss it, rewatched it a few years back and I know for sure I will rewatch it again in 2 or maybe 3 years. It is a compelling SCI-FI show, strong characters, one big story-arc, exciting stories. As a SCI-FI fan, you’ll have watch it at least once, yes, it is unfinished, but it is still a great TV show to rewatch every few years. Happy 10th Anniversary Dark Matter!
