2023/02/01

This year it is 23 years ago since Dark Angel, since Max came on to our screens! Created by James Cameron, who we all know from movies like The Terminator, Avatar, Titanic, True Lies, The Abyss, Aliens (screenplay) and so much more. So when he announced to create a TV show, we all were very curious about the end result. Well a show which got cancelled after two seasons, perhaps sets wrong expectations because the show is still today loved by so many fans.

I purchased both sets from the UK as soon as they came available, back in 2003. In 3 or 4 years time, I think I watched the show 3 times. Really liked it, liked the set-up, liked Jessica Alba as Max of course but the whole ensemble made this show work. At that time, like now, I also had storage problems, lack of I mean, so when few years later I saw that the show had a slimline release in Germany, I decided to sell my sets to purchase the German one. But after I sold them, I began reading some negative reviews about the packaging. The DVD's where stacked upon each other, six discs in each season. I wasn't fond of that so I decided to wait...that wait took 10-12 years. I purchased them in 2023 with the expectation that the discs were still stacked upon each other but I reckoned, 2 seasons for 18 euro's, is not very expensive and decided to take the gamble.

The set arrived few days ago and I immediately was taken with how the set looked from upclose, indeed a neat package for two seasons, a slipcover because it is a complete series purchase, not individual sets. When I opened both cases I was pleasantly surprised to see that the discs weren't stacked upon each other, as expected, but each disc was hold seperately, like the standard DVD released from that time in a standard DVD case. So I became even more enthousiastic about the set. No worries, it has an English soundtrack, it also has multipe subtitles to choose from, with the first season more than the second season. It also has a number of extras, like interviews and a featurette, you can check out the backside of the complete set for this. It is in German but I think it is fairly clearly even if German is not your native language, like myself.

Final Word:

It is a real nice, compact release, I have not a single complain about the packaging. If I have to name a downside to this release, is perhaps the fact that the cover-art is in German, not in English, but otherwise I cannot think of another downside. And you can select the menu to English and you can select various subtitles.

As I said, I watched it 3 times in a short period, at that time I did not feel the need to watch it soon again, but now 15 years have past and I have to say I really look forward to another rewatch of this show. If you have any comments .....
