First of all, again, I want to emphasize that I never read any comic books about Daredevil or any other heroes. So, what I write down below is purely based on what I have seen on TV, having no knowledge of any comic books.

Season two has left me flabbergasted! If you’ve read my season one blog, you’ll know I was very impressed with the first season and to be honest, I didn’t think season two could surpass it. After finishing season two, I am not sure if it surpassed season one, but it sure is as strong a season one and you have to keep in mind that both seasons are very different from each other. Where in season one it is about Wilson Fisk and the organized-crime conspiracy,  in season two threats are very different: Frank Castle as the Punisher, to some degree also Elektra Natchios and of course the main threat, which is evolving over the course of season two, the ancient organization known as the Hand (aka Yaminote).

Two New Characters:

In Season two we get only two new characters we hadn’t seen in the first season, which you can characterize as a regular character: Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), aka the Punisher and Ellie aka Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). This starts very early on in the second season; Wilson Fisk is behind bars, everything seems to settle down in Hell’s Kitchen, but suddenly there’s a bunch of bad people who are being killed, like the Bikers named Dogs of Hell and the Irish crime family. At first, it seems a new gang who is doing all that killing, but it turns out to be just one man!

Elektra Natchios is the other one, she suddenly shows up in Matt’s apartment. He and she were lovers at one time. Like Matt, Ellie was also trained by Stick. She says she needs his help and his law firm to help bring the Yakuza down. Although, they have been trained by the same man, they have different beliefs about bringing someone to justice. Matt is not about the killing, but Elektra doesn’t know any better but be a killer and she mostly enjoys this! All through the season Matt tries to make Ellie (Elektra) a better person, a good person.

The strained friendship:

Where in the first season the friendship between Matt, Foggy and Karen is a firm one, working together at the law firm Foggy & Nelson, in season two their friendship comes under a lot of pressure. It becomes harder for Matt to combine his life as a lawyer and as a vigilante, the Devil of Hell’s kitchen. As Matt becomes more involved with Elektra fighting the Yakuza, he gets further away from his friends Karen and Foggy. He lets them both down on many occasions, for instance, during the big Frank Castle trial. First Matt shines because of his absence, later, when he does show up, his cross-examination results in blowing up the Castle case when he deviates from the agreed arguments he got from Foggy. This is the last straw for Karen as well as Foggy, they can no longer trust Matt to be there when needed.

For Foggy, this botched trial ultimately becomes his resume to get hired by a big law firm. Matt finally chooses his life as he wants to lead it, being a vigilante and so Foggy and Matt agree to close their own law firm, giving Matt the much-needed freedom to be Daredevil but it also means he is about to lose two friends.

Karen is obsessed with the Frank Castle case. Although she realizes Frank Castle is a murderer, she also learns what made him this way, why he became this man who had killed 30+ people in a very short amount of time. Frank Castle was a highly decorated military officer, but he lost his wife and two children when gang members met at the park where he and his children were. These gangs were invited by the Blacksmith, who turned out to be Castle’s former military officer, Colonel Schoonover (Clancy Brown). While his family got killed, he was shot, in his head, but he survived! After the law firm Nelson & Murdock is dissolved, Karen goes to work at Ben’s former paper, the New York Bulletin.

One of the central storylines this season is Matt and Frank’s conflict. While Matt believes criminals should be stopped without taking their lives, Frank has a totally different view on that matter: he feels that what Daredevil is doing is not the solution because these criminals are back on the streets in no time doing the same thing, killing, raping, dealing and so on. So, he thinks the only solution is to kill every bad guy he can find.

As briefly said earlier, the other main storyline is Elektra in combination with this ancient secret organization called The Hand. It turns out that this organization is insidiously taking over New York. They are with many, all ninja’s, and they have the ability to rise again after they are killed, so they are immortal. And we learn that Nobu, a partner of Fisk in season one, belongs to this secret organization and is not dead as we, viewers and Daredevil, were led to believe. They are searching for The Black Sky, which we have also already heard of in season one. Elektra turns out this Black Sky, she is destined to become the leader of the Hand, followed even by Nobu. She is very tempted, but Matt successfully convinces her to choose his side.

In the final moments of the season finale, we see Daredevil and Elektra taking on the fighters of The Hand, including Nobu. Before this, Matt tells Elektra that if they are to survive, he wants to be with her, he wants to get away with her, because she is the only person who understands him.

The two of them are fighting against 30 or 40 Ninja’s, but when Nobu is about to kill Daredevil, Elektra saves him by getting killed herself. Her final words to Matt are: it feels good to be good (paraphrasing). Daredevil gets back to fighting and defeats Nobu and gets help from The Punisher in defeating the other Ninja’s. Nobu, who falls from the roof to the floor, opens his eyes, turns and gets his head chopped off by the Highlander! 😊 Stick chops his head off and while he quietly walks away, we see him gently putting his sword behind his coat as I have seen many times by Highlander’s Duncan MacLeod.

What most of us expect happens. We see an empty grave where Ellie, aka Elektra used to lie, and then we see her lying in that oversized metal-like coffin. We know what this means, she becomes immortal.

Wilson Fisk:

For the first seven episodes you might think we’d seen the last of Wilson Fisk, but in three consecutive episodes we see Wilson in prison. At first, he tries to keep his nose clean, keeping to himself, but soon that changes and he becomes the Kingpin of his prison, having everyone working for him. He even gets Frank Castle, who hates his guts, to do his bidding by releasing him from prison so he can continue what he has been doing so that when Fisk is released, he does not have to deal with any, or at least little competition.

Difference between the first two seasons:

Season one was mainly about Daredevil vs. Wilson Fisk and the criminal underworld, for the most part very straightforward storytelling. Season two, however, is much more complicated than the first season. There is a much more supernatural / mystical feel to it, especially with The Hand storyline. But this season Matt faces much more, he loses his best friend Foggy, Karen is done with him, Frank Castle does things differently than Matt. He is constantly torn between himself as Matt and his alter ego, which is becoming harder and so he finally chooses what he wants to be, not what others want him to be. The season ultimately serves as a bridge between the grounded crime story of Season 1 and the much larger supernatural / mystical world.

In the season finale Matt finally tells Karen that he is Daredevil! What Karen still not told Matt or Foggy or anyone, is that she killed Wilson Fisk’s righthand man James Wesley.

Final Word:

It became a longer blog that I anticipated, but this is because I am so excited about this season. I think I favor it more than the first season, but that does not mean it is better or anything, but especially the Hand storyline I really found interesting and that also goes for what Matt is going through personally. Daredevil is just a phenomenal TV show. Yes, I did watch the first season some 10 years ago, but especially from this season, I did not remember much. For me, the 3rd and final season will be my first watch ever! So much looking forward to that!
