Characters:

For many of you I don’t need to introduce the characters, but since there are bound to be more people like me, who only were semi familiar with Daredevil, I want to introduce these characters.

Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox) a blind lawyer whose remaining senses were heightened to extraordinary levels after a childhood accident. By day, Matt and his best friend Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) open a small law firm dedicated to helping people who have nowhere else to turn. By night, Matt becomes a masked vigilante, waging a one-man war against the criminals terrorizing Hell's Kitchen in New York City. After being framed for murder, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) is rescued by Foggy and Matt and she comes to work for them at their law firm. After what happened to her and what is happening with the city, she is determined to do her part. She teams up with a veteran journalist Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall) to uncover the truth about Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio).

Fisk is not a typical villain, yes, he is a monster, but he is portrayed as a deeply complex man. He genuinely believes he is doing the right thing, removing the bad elements in Hell’s Kitchen. The thing is, he is also a bad element, of course he knows this. When he courts Vanessa Marianna (Ayelet Zurer), his partners in crime Leland Owlsley (Bob Gunton) and Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho) see him become vulnerable, loose control of their current situation, losing battles left and right. James Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore) is Wilson Fisk’s right hand man. Especially in the beginning when Fisk operates in the shadows, Wesley represents him. Fisk considers Wesley a friend. Claire Temple (Roxann Dawson) is a nurse who happens to find Daredevil in a dumpster all beat up, hanging on s string. She cares for him, patches him up a few times. She is the first one who knows his true identity, she also points out to him that if he continues to fight the evil in Hell’s Kitchen, he might become what he is fighting.

Season One Overview:

It is basically a simple story, a villain, hero aka a vigilante, meaningless deaths, an emotional rollercoaster for our lead characters, but the way it is told, the depth of the characters, Matt’s constant struggle with what he does and his Catholic beliefs, hiding his alter ego from his best friend Foggy and Karen. Karen has a tragic story on her own, after being framed for murder, she almost gets killed in a prison cell, she gets determined to fight the evil of Hell’s Kitchen her own way and when she is kidnapped again by someone close to Fisk, she gets the option to kill him, which she does, but this imaginably also leaves a heavy mark on her as well, as she never killed before and she constantly needs to look over her shoulder if she isn’t being followed. And finally she also has to deal with the death of a dear friend. Not speaking of her past as of yet, which is also brutal. When Foggy finds out about his best friend alter ego, he is so angry, mainly because Matt didn’t trust him enough to tell him the truth, they were friends for so long. It takes a while before Foggy can accept Matt’s alter ego and continuing being his parter at their law firm.

We see flashbacks of Wilson Fisk as he was growing up, having to deal with a brutal father, seeing him as his example, seeing him beating up his wife, he does the necessary thing, which is at least a part of the reason why he became what he is. As a viewer, you get to see two sides of him, being a monster, a beast, but you see him also another side of him, especially when he is with Vanessa, the woman he courted. I have to say, after finishing the first season, it boggles my mind why a woman like that, well any woman, in her right mind, wants to stay with this monster. Of course, she doesn’t know all the details, how he kills people, who double cross him or are just in the way of his goals, in a gruesome way.

I understand when is said that this season is regarded as one of Marvel's strongest television seasons, Daredevil combines realistic crime drama, compelling character development, and intense action to tell the origin story of the Devil of Hell's Kitchen and his first great battle against the Kingpin Wilson Fisk. There are many impressive hand to hand combat scenes throughout the first season, most of them are simply amazing, as said, the characters are so well developed over the course of the first season, each of these characters pays a personal price in the pursuit of what they believe is right.

Final Word:

I have really been enjoying this season, just amazed with the quality of the episodes, the stories, the depth of the characters. The one thing that could turn people off is the hard, gritty and bloody fights, this is something you either can handle or not, but if you can live with that, you will really going to enjoy this series. Really looking forward to season two, although I currently cannot imagine it will top the first season, but I love the be proven wrong on this!
