Season 3 is a different season than the first two in many ways. Most notably especially the first part because Will no longer works for the occupation, they no longer have a home to go to. They are on the run after last season events. Snyder seems to have become their alley and perhaps even more! To avoid awkward questions, Alan Snyder is the “uncle”. But although it seems like it, but can Alan really be trusted?
The first five episodes of the season are very good I have to say, the Bowman family including “uncle” Alan Snyder live in an cabin deep in the woods for a number of months. But at some point they have to run when drones find their hideout. Like when Will and Charlie were climbing the wall, they Will and Katie now have the same experience in the forest when they are standing right in front of a drone.
They are now on the run again, still having the gauntlet which should be delivered to the resistance because it is being said that they could really hurt the oppressors with this thing. After they contacted the resistance, the Bowman family, after a long journey in a train, arrive at a camp, hidden deep in the forest. At first this looks as a good place to be for a while, although Snyder immediately says he does not want to stay there.
The camp leader, is not someone who trusts outsiders easily, even though they brought the gauntlet. It soon becomes obvious, this camp is very political, the leader is very narrowminded and does not appreciate other opinions than his own. Bowman’s soon learn that they have a Rap in holding but they aren’t allowed access to the alien. But after some horrible sound coming from the holding cell, Will and Katie manage to get inside and “meet” the alien. According to the alien, they humans are their alley in a war against another alien race which now also considers the human race their enemy.
The camp leader, McGregor, does not believe the alien and shuts communication off, Will and Katie try but their nosiness brings them in a lot of trouble, after the camp leader announces he will destroy the alien, not willing to see that his camp will be obliterated as a response by the occupation. Snyder foremost thinks about himself and cunningly make sure the message is out where he is, and where the RAP can be found.
McGregor loses it at that point and sentence Will, Katie and Bram shot by a firing squad. But because Snyder called in the Calvary the Bowman’s can escape. While fleeing into the forest they are defending themselves against the occupation force as well as the camp security and while this is happening, Charlie and Gracie escape to try and get to their parents.
These were 5 very exciting episodes, perhaps some of the best of the entire series. While watching you get the feeling too that you know the Bowman’s are at the wrong place at the wrong time. Snyder knows it immediately and tells Will and Katie that they should leave as soon as possible but of course once they know there is a RAP in the camp, they want to learn as much as possible from it. What I have yet to understand, at one point Broussard and Amy come to the camp (episode 4) and the camp is totally deserted, as if there hasn’t been anybody there for a very long time. This has not (yet) been explained.
On the run after a severe loss, the Bowman’s arrive in Seattle. Seattle seems to be a big step up, no obvious Red Hats, no violence of any kind. Will expects that he will be arrested, he is ask to come answer a few questions. He gave them a false name but it’s clear that they know he’s not telling the truth because a, man who is watching their interview has a picture of Will on his screen which clearly says Will Bowman!
You expect the next episode to see this being followed up, but this does not happen, the Bowman’s not are the Daltons, even though the administrators of the Seattle block know he’s not Will Dalton but Will Bowman.
We are jumping ahead a period, Katie has a job in helping people who flee to Seattle get housing. Although she soon finds out that these folks don’t go the houses or apartments! Will is a taxi driver and a private detective on the side, he and Katie aren’t on speaking terms, Katie buries her head in the sand, while Will sees this is just another block, a prison.
He reconnects with Broussard and soon they are planning ops together against the occupation. Due to recent loss, Will is not himself, Amy sees this but Broussard, although seeing it, does not want to do anything about it, they have a history. When Will sees Snyder he goes berserk. He makes plans with Broussard and Amy, with the help of Bram to kidnap him. Will intents on killing him but he first wants Snyder to admit he is the blame for a certain death close to Will. Snyder does not give in and tells Will he told him and Katie very early on that they shouldn’t have stayed in that camp. Bram comes to his father and sees Snyder still alive, Bram is appalled by his father and asks him to give him the gun to kill Snyder.
In the last 4 episodes is does become clear why Will did not get in trouble when he had this interview when they knew he was Will Bowman. It becomes clear that the hosts did have a specific reason for this, but proxy Everett Kynes had a different reason for allowing them into the Seattle Colony. You see how Bram believes that his parents bring their children in jeopardy with their actions with the resistance. You that see Snyder at the top in season 1, falls down in season 2 and climbs back up to the top towards the end of the third season.
That bit in episode 4 this season where Broussard and Amy arrive in a deserted camp, a camp that seems to be uninhabited for a long time, has not been explained. What really is a shame of course is that the series ends with a cliff-hanger! This is criminal! Even though I will never know the ending, I still am glad I was able to rewatch Colony on Blu-ray. Season 3 is perhaps the best season of all three, but I enjoyed them all three immensely.
Best season 3 episodes:
Well I have to say the first 5 episodes when the Bowman family have to escape their hideout in the woods and go to the resistance camp. Those 5 episodes I really thought was great TV.
(Re)watch recommended!
