Introduction:

Colony is a SCI-FI show, created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal. Most of you know Cuse from shows like Lost and Nash Bridges, starring Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies. The show aired on the USA Network and the first episodes aired on January 14th, 2026. The final episode aired on July 25th, 2018. This was the second TV show Josh Holloway got the chance to be a leading man in a TV show, not counting Lost. In 2014 he starred in Intelligence, which lasted one season and in 2025 he again was giving a lead role in the short-lived TV show Duster.

Premise:

Colony is a sci-fi drama about the Bowman family in near-future Los Angeles, which is under occupation by mysterious alien forces, forcing residents to choose between collaborating with the new regime or joining a risky resistance movement, all while the parents desperately search for their separated son. The series explores themes of survival, family loyalty, and resistance under totalitarian rule, following former FBI agent Will Bowman as he's coerced into hunting rebels, and his wife Katie as she secretly joins the underground.

General:

It has a strong cast, I already mentioned Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), but also Peter Jacobson, Amanda Righetti, Tory Kittles, Ally Walker, Erin Way, Peyton List, Paul Guilfoyle, Adrian Pasdar, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Carl Weathers (+), Laura Innes and many others. I was addicted to this show, watched it when originally aired for the first time and when I purchased it on Blu-ray, I watched a second time in 2020/2021. One downside, as often with shows like this, it got cancelled after the 3rd season so the story is unfinished unfortunately and it ends on a cliff-hanger.

Still, as an invasion show I thought it was quite clever, and quite different from other shows like V, Invasion and such. The way Colony tells its story, even mainstream viewers could actually get interested in this, because the SCI-FI part is there but mostly on the background. You almost do not see any aliens and if memory serves, it takes a full season before you even get to see one. It was more about human drama, how people live under constant pressure from an aggressive human workforce in service of these aliens. It successfully tries to show the audience how oppressive this must be, how it must feel, living under such a harsh regime.

Blu-ray:

As far as I know, Colony has been only released completely on Blu-ray in two countries, in Germany and in France. In Australia only the first two seasons have been released. On the French and Australian sets you’ll won’t find English subtitles. On the first two season of the German release there actually are English subs, but unfortunately not on season 3.

Final Word:

Even though Colony did not get the chance to finish the story properly, I believe it still has much rewatch value, it is a compelling story, as said, it feels very oppressive, it does not let you relax because at any moment something can happen. The characters are thrown in all kinds of dangerous situations, at the mercy of to the powers that be, they have the control and before you know it, you are considered and spy and a traitor. I for one really enjoyed it and writing about it now gives me the urge again to start watching it again. The 10th anniversary would be a good enough reason to start watching it (again). Happy 10th Anniversary Colony!
