The final episode of the 3-parter, “Severed Dreams” is a rollercoaster ride where a lot happens. I cannot choose which episode I like better: Point of No Return or Severed Dreams. Oh well, it is just a fantastic television series which I currently am watching for the 15th time or something, perhaps one or two times more, I am actually not certain anymore.
Like with “Point of No Return”, this episode also starts out with a bit of a comedy. Londo returns, presumably from Centauri Prime, to Babylon 5 where he is waiting in line for an ID Card check. He is sulking and wining that it takes too long, insulting the Narn security officer and so forth, but when he is the first in line, somehow… his ID card does not work. The Narn security officer did hear Londo’s complaining about his people and lets him wait for an hour or two more before he has clearance.
Meanwhile we see the Alexander, General Hague’s ship, in combat with an earth ship loyal to Clark, the Clarkstown. We don’t see Hague, but Major Ed Ryan is in Command and refuses to fire on Earth ships, he has to be convinced by his 2nd in command, Bill Trainor. Ultimately they destroy the Clarkstown but Major Ed Ryan emphasizes the difference between other wars and the war like this where you have to fire on your own people, which he finds very hard. He orders the Alexander to go to the one place where they will be save: Babylon 5.
When Sheridan learns of this, he knows they will also get in trouble, he can no longer put this of, but as soon as the Alexander comes to their jump point, Garibaldi and Ivanova made sure there is no communication possible. At that moment Sheridan speaks to the people on the command deck, explaining what is going on, the Alexander needs their help and they are going to get it. Meanwhile, we see Delenn caring for a just arrived wounded Minbari Ranger, who has important information. The problem how to get him unseen passed security, is immediately solved when G’Kar offers his services. Via ISN we learn that Mars will not be implementing Martial Law, they don’t agree with this decision. Earth Alliance has yet to respond to their decision.
When the Ranger comes to in Medlab, he tells Delenn that the Shadows are moving, they are urging worlds of the League of the Non-aligned Worlds, to go to war with their neighbors. When Delenn asks if the Grey Council has been informed, the Ranger nods and says they had to say one thing: Problems of others are not our concern.
Major Ed Ryan meets up with Captain Sheridan and informs him that General Hague has been killed very recently. When he is asked about home, he tells that on the surface everything is peaceful, but it is far from peaceful. Clark has been putting his people on key positions, he has the power. Major Ryan hopes that Mars’ stand will help turn this around. Than the news breaks: The Earth Alliance has begun to bomb Mars.
Delenn goes off to find the Grey Council to correct the path they are walking on. She tells G’Kar that he has changed for the better, he was not the same man she met four years ago. Meanwhile the ship the Churchill also comes to Babylon 5 space, under the command of Captain Sandra Hiroshi. She and her crew also stand with Babylon 5 and the Alexander. At an live ISN broadcast, talking about the current crisis, another reporter from ISN breaks in and tells that colonies Orion 7 and Proxima 3 also have broken away from Earth in protest of the Mars bombing, and that so much is going on, so much they weren’t allowed to say and than the transmission is cut-off and we see the studio being bombed and attacked. Captain Hiroshi tells Sherian that there already are ships on their way to Babylon 5, intending to take control of Babylon 5 and arrest the command staff and put the Night Watch into power.
Sheridan tells his command staff, there are two options: Fight or surrender. They all choose fight. Immediately everything is prepped, Starfury’s go on flyby before the Earth Alliance ships arrive. Sheridan is getting ready for making an announcement but first he’s got to make a call. We get back to Delenn who has arrived on the Grey Council’s ship and forces her way through a Minbari trying to stop her. Delenn aggressively and forcedly takes to word and tells the Grey Council about the Shadows which have begun to move and that they, the Grey Council were twiddling their thumbs. She says: We stand between the candle and the Star, between the Darkness and the Light, that they must act now, stand together with the other races, otherwise this council should be broken as was prophesized by Valen. She asks them to follow her as she walks away.
Sheridan makes a call to his dad, he doesn’t know if he gets the chance later on with everything that is happening. His father follows the news and understands, he knows his son and knows he is on the good side. He asks his son: what is the first lesson I taught you? Sheridan answers: Never start a fight, but always finish it. Meanwhile everyone on Babylon 5 is getting ready for battle.
With the help from the Draal, down on the planet, Sheridan makes a speech which is seen by everyone. He tells that because Clark is issuing illegal orders, bombing innocent civilians on Mars, has dissolved the Senate, the many deaths, Babylon 5 declares, like Mars, Orion 7 and Proxima 3 to break away from Earth, declaring independence until Clark has been removed from office. Ivanova asks Sheridan if they should ask help from Draal, but Sheridan wants to keep him a secret as long as possible, as an ace in the hole. Then ships enter Babylon 5 space and ordering Babylon 5 to surrender. The fighting starts, but Sheridan tells his fighters: let them start shooting, so we can finish it. The war is heavy outside Babylon 5 where the Churchill explodes, but also within the station when a breaching pod latches itself onto Babylon 5 hull. Hand to hand combat breaks out between Garibaldi and his men and women and Clark’s forces which results in many more deaths.
When Babylon 5 can take no more, the fighting is paused, but then another Jump point is opening, multiple Earth Alliance ships allied to Clark come in B5 space, ordering B5 to surrender or be destroyed. When everything seems hopeless, four new jump points open on top of Babylon 5. It is Delenn with several Minbari ships, she tells the Earth Alliance ships to go away if they value their lives, which they do. Note - Perfect scene I might add, when you see Sheridan’s hopeless face just when Delenn comes to the rescue. Major Ryan asks Sheridan if he can take a number of pilots and Starfury’s from the Churchill, so they’ll have a home and B5 is at full strength. The Alexander moves away, trying to find allies, who also don’t agree with what Clark is doing. When Sheridan leaves his uniform jacket, Ryan reminds him, but Sheridan tells him that at the moment, he doesn’t want to wear this uniform again, not until this crisis is resolved.
When Delenn enters Babylon 5, we see Night Watch and other people who are loyal to Clark, leave Babylon 5. Sheridan tells Delenn that when he saw her face when she arrived with these Minbari ships, he was really happy to see her! He is so grateful because of what she did and he suspects that this wasn’t easy and will have repercussions for her later on. Final scene, Ivanova takes the command Staff and Delenn with her to the Zocolo, where they get a loud applause for their efforts.
Final Word:
This was a lot of work, writing these 3 episodes in such a short time, but I felt the urge to do so. When episodes like this come by, you just realize how good this Tv show actually is. Best moments in this episode, there are too many, but for me, two stand out: Delenn’s visit to the Grey Council and Captain John Sheridan’s relieved face when he sees Delenn on that screen. As said, many more moments, but these two moments stand out for me.
Ps. This will be the last Babylon 5 episode I am going to write a blog for. Two reasons: I cannot enjoy the show as much when I need to constantly write key-words during the episode, for the blog. Another reason is that it does not seem to be that popular on the website as I have yet to see one comment or a star rating, so, therefore I let it end here.
