To me, this episode is one of a 3-part series, which began with the previous episode “Messages From Earth” and ends with “Severed Dreams”, with this episode being the middle episode where everything is being built up to an unavoidable clash between the Earth Alliance of President Clark and the Babylon 5 Command Staff.
The episode starts out really comedic between Londo and Vir. Vir, who has returned from Minbar where he is an ambassador now, is showing Londo his reports. Londo finds them way too positive and he suggests rewriting these reports to keep the folks at home happy. When Vir is about to storm out furiously, Londo gets a message that Lady Morella has accepted his request to show her around the station. Lady Morella was late Emperor Turhan’s 3rd wife. Obviously Londo has another reason why he invited her. She is a seer and he wants to know what his destiny is.
Meanwhile, Lt. General O'Reilly reports that the Earth Alliance is now under Martial Law, the Senate has been dissolved. ISN also reports that the Earthship the Alexander, commanded by General Hague, is fighting with ships allied to president Clark, trying to get other commanders to join his side against president Clark. Hague had sent a message to Sheridan that he is on his own now, everything is gone to hell! On Babylon 5, the Night Watch has another meeting.
The head of the Night Watch security tells Zack to come prepared, bring a PPG with many caps. Because Garibaldi needs everyone from security because of this situation, G’Kar has been released early. He promises Garibaldi that he may have something for him later. Sheridan and his Command Staff are meeting General Smits who tells them what is happening, and that they should respect the chain of command. He tells them that from now on the Night Watch will run security and everyone who isn’t Night Watch, or doesn’t want to join, is fired. When Sheridan objects to this, the General says: See this as an opportunity, not a burden! At that moment Sheridan doesn’t think anything of it.
We get back to the Night Watch meeting where everybody is informed what is about to happen, that arrests are going to be made. Meanwhile Garibaldi is furious and goes to the meeting where he tries to convince them to stop this nonsense. They work for Sheridan and for him, not for “bozo’s at home, having their own agenda’s” (paraphrasing). When no-one is listening to him, he is escorted out by Security. Lady Morella asks Londo why he has invited her. He tells her the real reason and she considers it and tells him that she will honor his request before she leaves for Centauri Prime.
Ta’Lon is waiting at G’Kar’s quarters as he returns from his time in prison. He tells G’Kar he has been waiting since G’Kar’s incarceration. G’Kar tells Ta’Lon that he had a revelation. He tells him that to save the Narn people, we must sacrifice our people, we must sacrifice ourselves. Note – G’Kar has becoming a different man for most of the season now, after his prison time, he is that changed man. Meanwhile, Hague is gone, no one knows where he is. Later we learn that Hague is still fighting against Clark’s Earth Alliance Ships. Note – Everything General Hague does, happens offscreen. Robert Foxworth, who portrayed General Hague in previous episodes, was supposed to return in this episode but he was double booked by his manager! His Manager also had accepted a role for him to appear on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine! Because he could only do one of the two, we didn’t see him in this episode. While Sheridan is reading the declaration of Martial Law, fighting on the station has started. Sheridan tells Franklin he feels “dirty” after reading this order about Martial Law and he remembers what General Smits said: See this as an opportunity, not a burden! G’Kar comes to Ivanova and has a proposition! Zack opens the door to his quarters and sees Ivanova, G’Kar and Garibaldi in his quarters and Sheridan behind him. Note - He had many opportunities before this to quit the Night Watch, but now he gets a push.
When the fighting started on Babylon 5 after seeing the footage of space battles at IO on ISN, Vir gets hurt, Lady Morella insists in caring for him. When she accidentally touches Londo’s hand, she has a prophecy, seeing him as an old man in the Emperor’s chair. Zack goes to head of the Night Watch security and tells him that Sheridan and the others wanted him to join their side, setting up a trap for all the Night Watch guards. Note – So strange, Vaughn Armstrong is the head of the Night Watch on B5, but he never got named! Strange for a character that did become important in season 3. G’Kar asks the Narn population on Babylon 5 to help him, help to secure Babylon 5, help the Command Staff. The Night Watch takes the bait and is captured by Sheridan’s people. Sheridan gives a speech to these captured Night Watch personnel that they accepted an illegal order, someone from the political office cannot give an order to an Earth Alliance officer. G’Kar’s proposition was that the Narns on Babylon 5 become the new security detail.
Londo gets his prophecy, Lady Morella tells him he has 3 opportunities to avoid the fire:
- Save the eye that does not see: G'Kar after he loses his eye during torture by Emperor Cartagia.
- Not kill the one who is already dead: is about saving John Sheridan, who technically "died" on Z'ha'dum and returned.
- Surrender to your greatest fear: Londo's final chance at redemption where he submits to the Drakh Keeper, knowing it will ruin and destroy him, to save Centauri Prime and protect Vir.
Before that Londo wonders if he no longer has a choice. Lady Morella responds: There is always a choice. We say that there is no choice only to comfort ourselves with a decision we have already made. She also tells Londo he will become Emperor and looks at Vir and tells him that he will also be Emperor! When Lady Morella returned home, Vir and Londo seem to no longer trust each other, because of this both being Emperor business.
Sheridan thanks G’Kar for his help and tells him if there is ever anything he can do for him…G’Kar responds directly: Yes! I want in! In the final moments we learn that General Hague is on the run from Clark’s Earth Alliance ships.
Final Word:
It doesn’t get any better than this…well, perhaps it does, next episode and later on in season 3 and season 4, but still, this is perfect television to me. I remember, back in the day, the excitement these episodes brought me as I purchased Babylon 5 VHS video tapes each month, having to wait for the tape with these two episodes: Point of no Return and Severed Dreams. Nowadays we have everything at our fingertips with streaming, but back then, you had to have patience, looking forward to the next episode. If I had a choice back then, I wouldn’t want to wait obviously, but looking back to that time, it was special and it gave me excitement for what was about to happen. Of course, for someone living in North America it was different because there it was on TV weekly, but in Europe it took one, sometimes maybe two or three years before a TV show from North America was on TV here. So, these VHS video Tapes, which were released each month, were a blessing!
