The story starts rather quietly and fun, Sheridan, Garibaldi and Ivanova are having breakfast and Garibaldi is complaining about the having the same breakfast day in, day out when someone from the kitchen brings Ivanova a covered plate. All three are stunned when it gives a smell of bacon and eggs and Ivanova tells the guys that it was Marcus’ doing. She will kill him…after breakfast.
The screen directly switches to Marcus, who is on the run, with a woman, from some bad people. Marcus tries to save this woman, who, we later learn, saw something she shouldn’t have, because it could kill her. Later, on the background we see an ISN news item where it is said that President Clarke is denying the accusation’s, that he is being framed by people who not have the best intentions for earth, referring to the accusation he was responsible of the death of president Santiago.
We also see footage of a Shadow vessel and ISN comments that EarthGov still has no clue what they are but they investigating this. Marcus brings this woman to Medlab, under Dr. Franklin’s care. By the way, this woman, Dr. Mary Kirkish, is “The Package”, an informant of Marcus was referring too in the previous episode “Exogenesis”, when Marcus was informed that the package just left Mars and was on its way to Babylon 5.
Garibaldi visits G’Kar, who is imprisoned, which G’Kar greatly appreciates. Garibaldi is surprised G’Kar is so cheerful. G’Kar tells him that outside the prison, everything is a distraction, inside these walls, you can only look inwards, there is only silence, which is a good companion. Garibaldi also tells him a petition has been signed by the other inmates about G’Kar’s singing. Garibaldi leaves when he gets a code 7R message.
In a meeting room we see the Command Staff, Delenn, Lennier, Marcus and Dr. Mary Kirkish, the one Marcus had brought to Medlab, to tell a story that happened some 7 years ago on Mars as she was working a dig site as she was employed with IPX. They found a Shadow vessel deep in the ground. At some point EarthGov told them to move away from the dig site and wait, this wasn’t a request but an order. Some 6 days later, another Shadow vessel came to the dig site and freed the other Shadow vessel. The Shadow vessel in the ground gave her nightmares for years to come, but the screeching when, it was cut loose by the other Shadow vessel was even more terrifying. Apparently, Garibaldi also seen a part of this and he tells that he was the one to bring in Dr. Kirkish to tell about this. But the good doctor tells it gets worse, another one is found on Ganymede, and EarthGov doesn’t want to give this one back to the Shadows, they want to use it themselves. Sheridan is shocked by everything he hears, he needs to think about what to do about this. Dr. Kirkish’s story has been told at this point and Delenn will make sure she remains safe by bringing her to Minbari.
Meanwhile we see Zack and another security guard (Vaughn Armstrong), who appears to be higher up the ladder within the Night Watch. There is a meeting coming and this security guard is all excited because things are about to change. Zack is visibly uncomfortable with all this, he doesn’t think like these other Night Watch characters but he still keeps wearing that black cloth around his arm for the extra credits.
Sheridan is contemplating, feeling betrayed by his government, by his own uniform. He decides to take off his uniform and he tells the Command Staff of his plan, to go with Delenn and Lennier to Ganymede and kill that thing, which he obviously means the Shadow vessel. During the Night Watch meeting, while Sheridan is away, it has been noticed he is gone, while Zack is still skeptical, this main security guard tells that government officials and Military personnel have been under investigation for working against what is best for earth, under Clarke and that arrests are going to be made soon.
On the way to Ganymede, Sheridan tells Delenn he misses the rain. He continues his story that when he was in college, he studied till deep in the night and he could not sleep, his father heard him pacing, he took the garden hose, and held it up against his window so that it would appear it was raining so he could get a few hours of sleep after all. Delenn says something in Minbari and suddenly Sheridan hears raining. A very nice moment between these two characters who are getting closer and closer.
Back on Babylon 5, Ivanova is angry at Marcus, she holds him responsible for Sheridan to go off on his own, without her to help him. She blames him and asks him where his fits in everything. Another comedic moment where Marcus is very quick-witted. Susan than says: it’s time, they must be at Ganymede by now.
We see the Shadow vessel escape, after someone from earth entered the ship as a pilot, which according to Delenn, is dangerous, because the vessel and the human were merged for only a very short time. There is a fight between the White Star and the Shadow vessel. Delenn and Lennier fear that there is no way out, but Sheridan has an idea. He orders Lennier to go to Jupiter, into the atmosphere, as deep as possible, in the hopes the Shadow vessel follows them. The ship almost buckles under the pressure but Sheridan manages exactly at the right time to order Lennier to bring the ship back up into space while the Shadow vessel does buckle under the pressure and gets pulverized.
The White Star crew is relieved, that they are still alive, but then the Agamemnon, Sheridan’s former ship, orders them to surrender. Sheridan refuses to shoot at his old ship, while he is thinking what to do, Delenn suggests opening a jump point within the Jupiter Atmosphere, which has never been done before! The White Star successfully creates the jump point in the atmosphere and escapes.
Back on Babylon 5, the ISN new reports that an unknown alien ship was responsible for what happened on Ganymede. The main security guard asks Zack to try and find out via Garibaldi where Sheridan was, because he was gone for a few days. Zack is opposed to that because although they are going through a rough patch at the moment (he and Garibaldi), he still considers him a friend. The annoyed security guard tells Zack that he has to choose between earth or his so-called friends. Marcus has made a chart to show to Ivanova, where he thinks he fits and everyone else too. He even added his parents. It makes Ivanova laugh, which was Marcus’ main objective. The episode ends with an ISN message that, in part because of what happened at Ganymede, Clark declares Martial Law!
Final Word:
First I was thinking to write one blog about “Messages From Earth”, “Point Of No Return” and “Severed Dreams”. But I decided that perhaps it’s best to write a blog for each of the three episodes, because otherwise it would become way too long. “Messages From Earth”, clearly is a prelude to what is coming next. I remember from back in the day, purchasing these episodes on VHS tape, two episodes a month, looking forward each time, it was so exciting, eagerly waiting, seeing this show unfolding into what it became, just amazing TV! This 3-parter is some of the best TV ever been created!
