January 16th, 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the TV show 12 Monkeys, of course (loosely) adapted from the 1995 movie with the same name starring Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Madeline Stowe. The show aired on the Syfy channel and was created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.

Before 12 Monkeys Terry Matalas also worked / was associated with Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Terra Nova. After 12 Monkeys he also worked on the reboot of MacGyver and the 2nd and 3rd season of Star Trek: Picard.

Aaron Stanford is James Cole, Amanda Schull is Dr. Cassandra Railly. Two strangers were brought together by destiny on a mission to use time travel to stop the destructive plans of the enigmatic organization "Army of the 12 Monkeys". Kirk Acevedo (Fringe) is José Ramse, Noah Bean is Aaron Marker, Barbara Sukowa is Katarina Jones, Todd Stashwick is Deacon, Emily Hampshire is Jennifer Goines. Tom Noonan plays the creepy Pallid Man, he is a recurring character.

12 Monkeys is truly a brilliant show! When I first started to watch it, there was a long period of waiting between the first and second season. This was the reason why I didn’t go on with watching when it was available again. However, when the complete series was released by Mill Creek on Blu-ray in 2020, I purchased the set and watched it from A to Z and all I can tell you is that this is definitely one of the best TV shows in the last decade. No, I don’t mean as a best SCI-FI TV show, but one of the best TV shows in general! I thought it was a masterpiece, correction, I think it IS a masterpiece. But one advise I have to give you if you ever think of watching this: when you are tired, don’t do it, watch it another day, because so much happens in an episode, so many details, you have to pay attention, otherwise you can get lost quite easily.

I started watching the first episode early January 2021 and I was planning to also create blogs for each season. But I found it too difficult because it is quite complex, so many things happen in each episode. It is also because I still have problems with creating blogs for shows I’ve only seen once or twice. I make notes with too many details and as a result I incorporate too much in detail. So hopefully with my next rewatch I will be able to write a blog for it.

Originally the series creators plotted 3 seasons in advance, but they also made clear that the show could go on longer than that. During the 2nd season the creators told Syfy they needed 4 seasons to complete the story. The end of the story was known to them since the beginning. Matalas said about it: "We have a definitive target in place. It's very emotional and it's going to make everyone cry." Chaidez: said the ending is designed to "circle back".

According to Rotten Tomatoes the first season only has a 60% positive review critics, while the audience are more positive with 77%. With the following 3 seasons it is the critics who grade it higher while the audience stays (somewhat behind). Although still well above average.

Final Word:

12 Monkeys definitely is one of the best TV shows Syfy channel had on its programming in the last decade, although the ratings did not suggest that, in that regard it is perhaps a miracle 12 Monkeys managed to stay on the air for 4 seasons. But on the other hand, I don’t think the ratings alone are no longer representable for calculating the number of views with all the different ways people nowadays can watch a TV show. Anyway, I am very happy I have the complete series on Blu-ray, so I can watch it anytime I want. The Mill Creek release a very decent release, very happy with it! Happy 10th Anniversary 12 Monkeys!
