War of the Worlds is an American, Canadian SCI-FI TV series that ran for two seasons from October 7th, 1988 and the last episode aired on May 14th, 1990.
The series is a continuation of the 1953 film The War of the Worlds, a loose adaptation of the 1898 novel of the same title by H. G. Wells, using the same war machine designs and often incorporating aspects from the film, radio adaptation, and the original novel into its mythology.
Though the original film's producer, George Pal, envisioned a TV follow-up sometime in the 1970s, it was not until the late 1980s that a series was finally realized, this time by television producer Greg Strangis. The show was a part of the boom of first-run syndicated television series being produced at the time. It was later shown in reruns on the Sci Fi Channel.
Premise:
The War of the Worlds (1988) television series is a direct sequel to the 1953 feature film. It operates on the premise that the alien invaders weren't killed by Earth's bacteria, but were instead forced into a state of suspended animation and locked away in toxic waste drums by the government.
Thirty-five years later, in 1988, a terrorist raid on a nuclear waste dump accidentally irradiates the barrels. This radiation neutralizes the bacteria that kept the aliens comatose, awakening them and prompting a second, more covert attempt to conquer the planet.
