The Orville started in 2017, when we first saw the trailers, we thought it would be a comedy in space. I even at first thought that each episode would have a sitcom length of 20-22 minutes. This luckily was not the case and although there is a fair amount of humor in it, the show got a little more serious over the course of its first season and certainly in the second season.
You don't have to be a genius to see the resemblance between Star Trek and The Orville. Mainly Star Trek: The Next Generation. Most Star Trek fans love The Orville, because it is Star Trek what they were used to, back in the 80s & 90s. Star Trek: Discovery, which came out at approximately the same time, is the opposite of what The Orville is and thus Star Trek fans see The Orville as the new Star Trek show instead of Discovery.
The Orville is a really nice show, and yes, it has a huge 90’s Star Trek feel, much more than Discovery ever did. Yes, I would have loved to have seen more story arc. There is a story-arc, obviously, about the Kaylon, and there also are personal story-arcs but it is not like Deep Space Nine or the 3rd season of Enterprise, but that’s okay. I enjoy it for what it is, it’s a show that has gotten better with every season, the 3rd season is without a doubt my favorite Orville season. A bit more serious, still there is humor, but it is toned down a bit and I truly love it. It most likely will be its last season unfortunately, but it definitely has found a place in my TOP 20 favorite TV shows of all time!
Plot (IMDb):
Set 400 years in the future, the show follows the adventures of The Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth's interstellar Fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, this motley crew of space explorers will boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.
