Star Trek: Discovery is the sixth live-action Star Trek TV series which first was released on September 24th 2017 and is currently still running. Season Five will be its last and will arrive somewhere in 2024. More than a year later than expected, at least by my expectations.
The sixth Star Trek series started twelve years after the fifth, Star Trek: Enterprise ended. It took twelve years, a long wait, if you ask me. From the very first episode Discovery, to me, did not feel the same as the Star Trek shows that went before it. This doesn't necessarily is a bad thing but for me Discovery did not gave me the same excitement as shows like Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, Voyager, The Next Generation and The Original Series. What is different from the start, is what did bug me from the start, is that the main character isn't the captain, which was hard for me to get used to.
Since the start of this website I pondered on the fact if this Star Trek show belongs on my favorites page. Well it took 2.5 years before I decided to add it here, mainly because of the 2nd season, mainly because Captain Pike. For me this is the best season of Discovery. After season 3 I stopped watching, I really was disappointed with the 3rd season and till today I do not feel the need to watch the 4th season. I do have the first two seasons on Blu-ray, but I won't purchase the other seasons and because of the first two seasons, this show has been added here.
In the same year that Discovery arrived, we also got The Orville, and to be honest, what I was missing in Discovery, I found on The Orville. Not to say that The Orville is perfect, but it comes much closer to the Star Trek that I love and grew up with than Star Trek: Discovery. The Orville should have been the 6th Star Trek if you ask me. Star Trek: Discovery however is responsible for the spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which I do very much like, so it's not all bad! Recently we learned that Star Trek: Section 31 is also going ahead, although in a different format. I could be wrong but I'd rather they left Section 31 alone, don't make a show about this organization, keep Section 31 a secret, don't spill the beans, but why would they listen to me! And perhaps I am mistaken after all, we will wait and see!
